Title: League 2 signings and rumours for the upcoming season.
Post by: Peter Venkman on Saturday, June 7, 2025, 10:35:08
Its that time of year for the start of the thread about other teams new signings/sales.

Several teams have started early like us in signing new players before the window opens.

An interesting rumour is that Bristol Rovers best player Sierra Leone international midfielder Kamil Conteh is subject of a bid by Plymouth and Derby.

Barrow sign 24 YO striker Innes Cameron from Kilmarnock

Is there a reason why Mr Cesay's age was exclusively redacted?  ;)

Innes Cameron has to be one of the most Scottish names without a ''Mc'' in it. He's also Wentworth Miller from Wish  :D

Christ on a very expensive bicycle.

Looking up L2's most expensive signings, there's two Peterborough goalkeepers- Shwan Jalal and Joe Lewis in the mid 2000s but not much else. Allegedly Kaiyne Woolery to us in fifth https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/league-two/transferrekorde/wettbewerb/GB4/plus//galerie/0?saison_id=alle&land_id=alle&ausrichtung=alle&spielerposition_id=alle&altersklasse=alle&leihe=&w_s=&zuab=zu

Post by: Nemo on Monday, June 16, 2025, 18:05:27
I think we're a bit more than admin expenses away from paying near seven figure transfer fees. That's not absolutely being well run, that's about having owners willing to invest over and above the money the club makes*

* Which, technically speaking, ours do, as we make a loss every year. But there are levels to this and we're very much not at the top end.

I don't think there's a single player that would be prepared to play in L2 that's worth a fee that size.

Yes but still if we had a sell on from a deal giving us £5m+ it wouldnt be invested back into the playing side you can guarantee that 100%.

They have good sponsorship deals in place, like big names and the venue is used for concerts and that plus hotel in the ground as well. Should not equate to that deal but certainly makes them more sustainable and must make up for small gates.

Carlisle have done a lot of work behind the scenes which will help them.

Not so sure about Gills, he's pumped a bit of money in for not much return so far. Ainsworth will probably see them shithouse enough to be pretty good next season.

We don’t as far as I’m aware. Just hypothetically if you did want to bring in like for like cover for a target man, they’re a decent match in how they play.

I assume Drinan will be the Smith cover if we ever need it but they’re more far apart in their style.

We don't, need cover for injury and suspension.  Smith gets the brunt of opposing teams' dark arts every game.

Crawley set to continue buying non league players as they did fairly successfully for their promotion push 2 years ago by signing Danny Cashman a 24 year old striker from Worthing on a free. He scored 15 goals in the National South last season.

Harrogate sign 28 year old ex Derby wonderkid Mason Bennett from Millwall.

Walsall sign 22 year old defender Mason Hancock from Aidrie.

Oldham sign Cheltenhams 33 year old midfielder Tom Pett.

Chesterfield sign winger 23 year old Dilan Markanday from Blackburn Rovers.

2 of Barrows best players Kian Spence and Dean Campbell leave the club.

Fleetwood sign Suttons 28 year old striker Will Davies who scored 18 goals for Sutton last season.

Managerless Notts County have signed 32 year old midfielder Oliver Norburn from Blackpool and 27 year old Afghanistan international forward Maziar Kouhyar from York City.

Newport County have signed 25 year old Wales international midfielder Matt Smith following his exit from St Johnstone.

Barrow sign 25 year old midfielder Rekeem Harper from Port Vale.

Paul Mullin looks set to sign for MKD from Wrexham.

To be fair, in his last two L2 seasons he's played 84 and scored 56.  That's a silly amount of goals so he's definitely done something right since leaving us.

Would I have predicted how prolific he'd become?  Not a chance, I thought he'd trundle along at 10 - 15 goals a season, but to say he's overrated at this level given those numbers seems a bit harsh now.

Without having seen a player at close quaters join us, with similar numbers in our division, we'd be calling it a coup, no question about that.

Probably a great signing from a merch point of view too with him being a star in the US.

Mullin reminds me a bit of Glatzel - in the sense he’s a central striker we played wider.

No idea where he has operated post Swindon mind you.

Could be mistaken but his (Glatzels) best efforts in the "we all love Glatzel" end of first season extended cameo appeared to come from a wide striking position?

In the cold light of sobriety he seems much better suited to anything other than a central striking position.
The stats would appear to support a very promising role as an assistor.

I'm delighted to have him back on board.

A lack of sobriety may have put this in the wrong thread.
If in doubt blame DV.

"We all agreeee ahh that Glatzel is better than Mullin."

I am pretty certain we will carry on playing 343/352 this season. Even thought Ollie played 442 a couple of times it seems to be to counter opposition tactics early in his reign.

We need to dictate the formation rather than let the opposition dictate what we play, let them worry about us not the other way round.

Concur but still think if you have Harry Smith as your main striker you’d be a bit daft not to employ some dangerous wingers to whip crosses into him…

Michael Cheek puts in a transfer request at Bromley
Not sure he will get much higher than a decent L2 club, hes too old for any longer term contract, he has no pace as it is and only scored 16 goals last season from open play as 9 of his goals were penalties and according to the Tshimanga rule they don't count as goals by some posters.

I fully get that but...
Tshimanga scored 12 of his 13 goals in the 37 games under Holloway.

Tshimanga played a total of 2,651 mins football for 13 goals all season = 203 mins per goal
Tshimanga played a total of 2,101 mins football for 12 goals under Ollie = 175 mins per goal

Cheek played a total of 4,077 mins football for 26 goals = 157 mins per goal

Not massively different, I just do't think that Tshimanga (under Holloway) was as bad as many make out.

FWIW I dont think he will come back here anyway and not aware that he is an actual target for us.

Walsall set to sign Stevenages 23 year old big target man Aaron Pressley and look favourites to sign 19 year old striker Jonny Stuttle on loan from Bournemouth, he was on loan in the National league South last season where he got 10 goals in 19 games.

Bromley sign 28 year old defender Kyle Cameron from Notts County.

Bristol Rovers about to sign Mansfield defender Alfie Kilgour on a free.

Gillingham look likely to miss out on a deal for Wrexham defender Will Boyle, with Shrewsbury Town favourites to sign him.

Tranmere Rovers have signed 21 year old midfielder Charlie Whitaker from Everton.

Not league 2 but Hudderfield have released 6 foot eleventynine inch striker Kyle Hudlin, he was on loan at Newport last season where he scored just 6 goals in 30 games.

I saw him a few times for Wycombe when I watched on Sky and I didn't really think that much of him. He's a good experienced head and will probably do well under Ainsworth in L2 though.

If you play to the strengths of an experienced forward as County have done with McGoldrick then the chances are they will still score a lot of goals.

If you reluctantly play an ageing striker in a role he doesnt suit as we did with Charlie Austin and make him run a lot and press and chase the ball then that is far less likely to succeed.

Also Ainsworth obviously knows Vokes game having managed him at Wycombe so knows what to expect from him.

A lot of Bristol Rovers chat on my X timeline for some reason:

Rumours with some repetition or reputable source:
- Luke Southwood joining from Bolton for a nominal fee
- Bid submitted for Macauley Langstaff
- Linked with Johnson Clarke Harris

Have to say any of them 3 would be fine business in this division if there’s any substance to the chatter

Town will counter your 3k a week with a large pack of croutons, a monthly pint in Walkabout with the ASC and free entry to AFH's Lottery. Oh and the Belushi is good too {allegedly} :girlgiggle:

The sad reality is, that Fleetwood have spent more time in League One {ten seasons} than both Grimsby {zero years} and Town {four seasons} have in at the last 10-11yrs. Although Fleetwood are down in League Two with us again, they'd ultimately be seen by outsiders and people in football as an underperforming club that should be in low to mid League One. From a player perspective that might be a good proposition as a stepping stone club, they'll feel there could be a good chance of playing in League One, and if they're also matching wages, it's probably a no brainer.

In regards league status, similarly I personally believe STFC should be a team challenging at the top end of League One - reality is different though. Like the fact your lot haven't been higher than the fourth tier for about twenty years {I think}...which is also quite sad too, on reflection.

I now await Tails to come and do a tl;dr, as they struggle with more than five words in a sentence :girlgiggle:

So Fleetwood are "wealthy" because their owner financially supports their losses with interest free loans (£17m by 2020), but our owner is bankrupting the club by loading it with debt according to most on here.

And their owner genuinely is a convicted, jailed fraudster unable to serve as a director.

Fleetwood have a modern (granted on the smaller side), clean, well functioning stadium with executive boxes, an impressive , modern training facility that they own and a category 2 academy (one of the best in the bottom 2 divisions) to show for it.

1. Highbury is owned by Wyre Borough Council, the club rent it
2. It was a complete wreck that had seen no development since the 1950s until a 2 stage development plan the started in 2008 and ended in 2011
3. It has a capacity of 5500 much of which is still terraced  which limits the Leagues they can play in.

It is amazing considering where they came from. But they were a Phoenix club with no debt when Pulley took over. AND HE TOOK OVER IN 2003 MORE THAN 20 YEARS AGO.

Four years after he took over the club were in the Northern Premier League, the academy was non existent and the ground was entirely undeveloped.

He lent the club millions to build all that and it's taken 22 years.

Fair points but:
1. I didn’t say they owned the stadium
2. Whilst their stadium is on the smaller side, it’s in much better knick than ours right now and as you say, the situation is much different considering where they came from and where they are now.
3. The academy and training facility is light years above ours right now and the fact they own it as well is another asset. This is the real impressive part about the club, coming from where they are to where they are today and having that impressive of a youth setup takes smart investment.

Is it optimal? That’s debatable but the debate was peoples opinions on that vs our situation here and I would say that they have  some sort of return on that investment, they’ve climbed the leagues and have setup some long term benefitting assets. As opposed to our downward trajectory with very little to show for it.

Fair fucks to them, I think we are all aware that there are many multi millionaire buyers out there who will all be willing to invest money into their newly purchased clubs, but for that to happen a club must be up for sale.

If say a club in say L2 was said to have an owner who is "willing to listen to offers" and that club has a value of say £12m at most, and the prospective millionaire was willing to pay a little over that figure to make sure he aquired the club.

But then the owner then says "oh my club isnt for sale unless you pay me way more than what the club is valued at" so he puts a stupidly inflated price on a sale because the club isnt officially up for sale and then becomes unwilling to budge from that inflated price and then becomes very difficult to deal with.

Then any possible negotiations slow down with the prospective buyer not willing to pay more than he can see the club is worth and the current owner is not willing to drop his asking price at all because "the club isnt actually up for sale".

Imagine that scenario, that would be a nightmare. I cant imagine any club owner except for an unscrupulous one or one with a massive ego would do such a thing depriving a club of adequate funding for staff and players despite having a decent manager and squad that only needs a few additions to make it a viable promotion candidate.

I would hate to support a club with a selfish owner like that.

,
Well Andy Carroll, a notoriously injury prone and massively over-rated "striker" that doesn't really score much and is now 36, is quite keen to buy the football club up the road from where his kids live and immediately sign himself to a 3 year contract at least. And has managed to persuade some anonymous Qatari money to back him.

I'm not sure you can generalise much from that to be honest. I am pretty sure though that if our club had signed him on that length of deal at the same time he bought into the club's ownership structure you'd all be calling for the chairman's head. But you seem to do that anyway....

At 36 I’m surprised he hasn’t gone down the player manager route.

Salford sign experienced 30 year old midfielder Jorge Grant from Hearts on a free, a good signing for L2 that.

They have also taken on someone who was quite high up within the City Group as their new CEO, it seems that the change in ownership is going to lead to a greater degree of cash spaffing?

At 36 I’m surprised he hasn’t gone down the player manager route.

As part of the deal seems to be giving him a minor stake in the club its more of a player owner role....

They are already on a "money is no object" road, I hope they crash and burn, no love lost for Salford City FC from me.

As for Andy Carroll, yes he seems to be in a shareholder position to some degree, its rare a player does that but has been done before with managers holding shares.

His debut last night vs Crawley was a bit of an anti climax!

Harry Mc scored his first Creepy goal for them too.

Wrong thread but wtf.

Crawley crypto man Preston Johnson has left the club after new 'lead investors' have moved away from the data driven recruitment approach.

Mildly interesting.

Surprised at his goal return being low over his career so far.  Looked decent for Carlisle scoring the goal for the home team in the 5 : 1 home defeat at the hands of the Town last season.  Expect Barnet  to do well this season.

He has got some promise but never seems to step up.

Apparently Barnet play in a way he is used to playing and thats why he chose them above other teams.

9 goals in 62 games at league level is not a great return so far in his career.

Maybe, Dongs will do a Carlisle, splash the cash and dash to the National League.  Unfortunately, unless bubonic plague takes over Buckinghamshire, it looks like they will get auto at a canter.

He used to be decent, will be 32 this season though. There seems to be a lot of older strikers dropping to our league this season looking at those transfers so far.

Nope I agree, its basically MKD and maybe Bristol Rovers are the only 2 teams who have brought in anyone decent, and the Rovers fans dont seem over confident at the moment themselves.

I have looked at many forums, pretty much every one in L2 and I have found a very different reaction, I would say that 75% seem to think we will at least be in the play offs come the end of the season.
