Didn’t they have Will Grigg last season.

Plenty of experience (and lower league goals) up front

Few fringe players at promoted teams moving clubs - Bradford have also signed Neil Byrne, the Stockport defender, Aaron Hayden left Wrexham to join Carlisle and (more a relegated player staying in L2) Matty Stevens has joined AFC Wimbledon from FGR.

Indeed and the worst it’s ever been for me and no I haven’t renewed 3 season tickets.

Heard from a very reliable source this Morning that we approached unemployment Ben Garner for the Managers role and he turned us down.

Just has a feeling that we are the next Oldham.

Sounds like we’ve got that basket case like reputation as a club now. Word spreads quick in football circles. Hard to shake that without full change.

Rejected by unemployed Garner. Sounds like STFC alright.

Then again, there's no Chorley and a transfer methodology that beggers belief. If he's got designs on another crack at being a manager he's got to give himself a chance at succeeding as he's probably on his last chance.

Must admit I wasnt impressed with him in the 1 game he played against us.

For a 27 year old he only has 37 league appearances under his belt.

L2 transfers out seeing as FGR got relegated, but Cheltenham have lost their captain and player of the year (two different players) to FGR.

Looks like Dale Vince hasn't got bored of his plaything and is going to go full hog on the national league.

Fun few days for Cheltenham who look early on like they'll be closer to our end of the table than the good one...

The words "a defender from Notts County" should really strike fear into anyone.

I don't.

His stats look OK, but goals tended to come in fits and starts. Also cost us the playoff semi, and I'm not talking about his penalty.

If we were genuinely goin go for promotion he wasn't good enough. Given where we are I'd have him in this team.

The whole team didn’t show up. There’s not way I’m putting blame on one player.

He did over excel for us, only got 4 league goals last season in 36 games.

For me it was more about the numerous chances he missed rather than the ones he took. Like a taller slower RHM, doesn't have a natural finishers brain.

He will get a half decent lower league career I am sure but doubt he will play higher than L1.

Is Davison the best you can get in this division? No

He does work very hard, occupies central defenders and in that formation really allowed Barry/McKirdy to cause havoc on the wing, and score plenty of goals.

The attacking unit is more important than an individual in my opinion.

Davison was 'alright', a typical League Two forward who will work hard for the team and get the odd goal now and then.  I liked him but found him frustrating at times.  I just don't think he is a player you can build your attack around and flog him into the ground (like we done in 21/22) but saying that, could be part of a squad as a 3rd striker that could potentially get promotion from the 4th tier.

That's it. He wasn't brilliant, he wasn't shit. He was a decent L2 player that tried hard, and for some reason (well, finances) we made him the only out and out forward in our squad. His backup was Harry Parsons, so he got run into the ground and it showed towards EOS. I wish him well, but I can't say I'm keen to have him back either.

Yeah, Davison did alright.
Not his fault that he had to play every minute.
Tried his best.

Suspect that Drinan will similarly divide opinion this season.

Title: Re: L2 transphers
Post by: UTR on Thursday, June 20, 2024, 11:05:09
Same category as Norris for me. A decent League Two striker with enough hold up/link up play to be an asset to a teams with good forward talent but not enough ability on his own to build around.

I liked him and would have liked him a lot more if he didn’t have to be run into the ground due to poor squad depth. I think one of him/Drinan is a good option to have in a squad with more clinical strikers.

Title: Re: L2 transphers
Post by: NotHarryAgombar on Thursday, June 20, 2024, 11:30:10
At times we underestimate the value of having someone up front who can get and hold the ball up to move us up the pitch when we’re trying to hang on to a lead or point and under pressure late on. At times last season, when we were under pressure the ball was cleared and came straight back. Both Davison and Simpson in 21/22 and Drinnan last season give us that.
Davison did ok for us, but badly needed a rest towards the end of that 21/22 season because we had no real rotation option for him.

Davison was good for us - you’re a fool if you can’t see that.

His career post Swindon leans towards indicating that was a purple patch though, so I wouldn’t be clamouring for a return…

Debating whether a striker that is unable to cut it in the basement was a good player for us.

Absolutely.

Davison did ok for us (just ok, he could have done way better), got a few goals, but I personally didnt rate him, he complimented the players at that time, and, I am glad we didnt sign him as I don't he would have improved if we did sign him, and he has done very little since, I feel we were right in not signing him.

Another very limit striker like a long list ahead of him, Norris, RHM, Delfouneso, Hylton, Woolery etc etc, all gave their best but none excelled and TBH none were particularly a loss when they left.

Just my opinion, everyone is entitled to their own opinion of course.

Scoring 9 in 21 games is indeed a good return.
He was good for us - no matter where the club is at - 9 goals in 21 is a decent strike rate. That’s 20 over a season. We’d take that. Most teams would…

Sure, in hindsight and 2 years down the road his career hasn’t taken off at all but that still doesn’t change the fact he was decent for us.

Dan Kemp was great for us but couldn’t cut in the basement with Franchise but you’d have taken him back…

Totally different, everyone could see that kemp was real quality for us, not even in the same ballpark as Davison, scoring goals does not make someone a good player.

I bet if you look back the same people that wanted us to sign Davison back then are the same people who rate him now and visaversa, Davison did a decent job but never really impressed at this level and hasnt done since either.

Like comparing apples to horses.

Anyway he hasnt signed for us so its irrelevent anyway.

Sure, in hindsight and 2 years down the road his career hasn’t taken off at all but that still doesn’t change the fact he was decent for us.

Dan Kemp was great for us but couldn’t cut in the basement with Franchise but you’d have taken him back…

His game management was shocking and could have scored more.

As for Kemp he was also outstanding at Hartlepool in a very poor side.
Never wanted to return to MKD.

Not keen on Hemmings personally. Question mark over Stockley keeping sound. Never heard of t’other fella so can’t comment.

Wonder if the Vale game will be the one we look for first when the fixtures are released?

Dunno, Hemmings has got a goal every 3 games in his 450 game career, not a bad return and scored 4 against us in 9 games.

Stockley almost identical strik rate/games as Hemmings. But has scored 60 goals in just 140 games in L2, most of his other goals have come at a higher level.

Would have liked Stockley, still only 30 with a great goal return and a 6 foot 3 target man, just what we have been missing for years IMO.

Chesterfield 7/1

Doncaster 12/1
Notts County, Bradford, Carlisle 14/1
Vale, Salford 16/1
Swindon 33/1
Bromley 80/1
Morecambe 100/1

Dunkley looks a good signing and Madden knows where the goal is but will be 35 next week so who knows how much he will play. The others I don’t really know of them so have know idea if they are any good so will reserve judgment until the season gets underway😁

These responses ref Davison just sum up where we are as a Club right now.
Debating whether a striker that is unable to cut it in the basement was a good player for us.

Fair point but we can't go on thinking that we're not where we used to be and that we can expect to sign Championship standard players. Davison was part of a squad that got us to the play offs so at the time and level was decent in my opinion. But it's all irrelevant now. Wouldn't be at all surprised if he's decent for the Trannies

That's not a good look when your players have outperformed all expectations and got the club promoted and as a reward are offered less money? No wonder so many are leaving for pastures new.

I feel sorry for the fans, especially on the back of a promotion (narrowly given they sneaked into playoffs and the number of games they lost in the season), to then have their first team sold off with no change to build upon.

Possibly, the only clubs that had a lot of new players at this stage last season were Doncaster and Grimsby who both bought in 7+ at this stage IIRC. While we were hoping for any new signing still!

I had noticed a lot of L2 clubs are getting business done much earlier than normal though.

Wow that is unusual, admittedly I wouldnt have wanted us to sign any of those players TBH. I know we had (Britains fastest convicted driver) Slew on trial a season or 2 back but having seen him play I dont think we missed out on him.
