I'm back for this one so we better win.
A quick look at the Grimsby forum and their match thread is 5 pages of moaning about prices.

Swindon 3-2 Grimsby att: 8,845 (132 of them)

Yeah. The cost of travelling and booze and they moan about an extra £2 on a ticket.

My first of missing 4 games. Piece if piss, 4-1.

£27 is too much for a ticket to be fair, especially for away fans. £20s plenty.

Grimsby since their return to the league travel in very good numbers for L2, last season they brought 565, they took 1,064 to Wrexham last week and 675 to Walsall a few weeks back.

For those who wish to read about the cost of our ticket prices its all here, a few are understanding but so many saying they wont go because its a couple of quid more than other grounds.

https://forum.thefishy.co.uk/Blah.pl?m-1694457001/s-0/

The ironic thing is that a season ticket at Swindon is £359 and at Grimsby its £420!

https://footballleagueworld.co.uk/all-efl-league-two-teams-in-order-of-season-ticket-prices-ranked/#tranmere-rovers---pound-440

Also many clubs charge more than we do for matches.

https://www.football-stadiums.co.uk/leagues/league-two/

But also I do agree £20 is more than enough for L2 matches, but to moan about us specifically is a bit pathetic, like Walsall fans last week.

MKD, Crewe, Colchester and AFCW all charge more for match day tickets than we do.

Walsall, Sutton, Morecambe, Gillingham and Accrington all within £2 of that price and some of those offer uncovered seating/standing with a poor view.

A lot depends on what you get as well, Morecambe was £25 but it was seated (not ridiculously tightly unlike some grounds) and under cover, pretty sure when we went to Barrow a couple of years back it was over £20 on a tight terrace where you couldn't see the whole pitch?

I am aware of this just stating the fact that at home they pay more than we do and are in the top 2 for charging their own fans the most for season tickets.

Failing that the tap is about half way.

The drink valley is very good. Quite a few town fans head there before games now. Prices are reasonable, I drink Paulaner (German Pilsner) which is excellent & costs £4.20. The owners are very friendly & can recommend other beers to drink, he does brew his own. I can't speak highly enough of the place.

If we can get through Saturdays game undefeated then we equal the all time Swindon record for longest unbeaten starts to a season, this dates back to 1995/96 unde MacMahon when we went 9 games unbeaten.

A Hull City    1-0 w
H York City    3-0 w
A Carlisle Utd 1-0 w
H Oxford Utd   1-1 d
A Brentford    2-0 w
H Chesterfield 1-1 d
H Bradford C   4-1 w
A Bristol Rvrs 4-1 w
H Rotherham U  1-0 w

A run that saw us sit 4 points clear at the top of Div 2 on 23 points.

Before we eventually lost 3-4 at Wrexham which was our only defeat until the 25th November a 0-1 defeat at Shrewsbury.

That was our last defeat that calendar year, in fact until mid January, a run of 13 wins, 8 draws and just the 2 defeats scoring 39 goals and conceding just 15 in the process which included, Wrexham accounted for 27% of that total.

We won the league that year on 92 points, 9 points clear of 2nd place Oxford and suffered just 4 defeats all season (another club record).

We managed 5, twice, in the Wellens season, not got beyond 3 in any season since then as far as I can see.

Dont know much about Maher and Conteh but Ainley was born in Swindon.

We all know about Danny Rose who had a great scoring record of a goal every 4 games at Mansfield a few years back and has scored a couple against us thro the years for a couple of clubs.

Weird that, as allegedly everything heard about McMahon's attitude both on and off the field at that time was negative, but obviously the team played well for him, professonal footballers at their best I suppose just getting on with it.

we had players that had played in the prem in the third tier under McMahon like Ling, Bodin, Horlock, etc. Plus a goalscorer in Allision. If you couldn't get promoted with that squad you've got no business being in a dug out.

That season we played some of the best football I have seen in my 50 years of following Town, I was lucky enough to work at the club at the time and did security for the players home and away and they were a great bunch who loved working under MacMahon, until things started to go wrong.

He fell out with the fans by getting rid of ex Town favourites and making stupid comments in the press pre and post games and was undone by a pathetic performance vs non league Stevenage (how times change) at home in a strong wind.

He knew how to get the best out of players namely Allison, Bodin, Culverhouse, Finney, Horlock, Seagraves, Allen and MacMahon himself who was still good enough for the Prem as a player, we also had a great player in Peter Thorne.

That season we dominated team and our defence was so solid with Taylor, Culverhouse, Seagraves and Robinson and had Digby and Talia in goal (as well as a young Shay Given on loan), we only conceded 34 goals all season but the football played was fantastic at times and gets overlooked because MacMahon was a twat of a monumental scale.

Teams used to come to us with 6 at the back and 1 up front so it was hard to break them down, but we always did pretty much with just 4 defeats all season and got to the 5th round of the FA cup, the last time we did that I think, getting beat at Premier league Southampton in a replay.

It would have been about twenty years ago that the side stands went up to £21, if memory serves me correctly. I can remember it being discussed on MOS and I think at the time it put us at about the same level as some Premier League clubs. £27 currently is a steal :D

Think they went up past the £20 mark to £21 after the play off season (03-04) particularly due to Sandy Gray’s massive tax fuck up?

In fairness Williams left us as manager 6 years ago.
He spent 5 of those 6 years outside of management before taking over at Notts County.

Not massively out of the realms of possibility he’s studied, learnt and improved in 5 years. I think we all knew he had something about him but i think the consensus here at the time was he was pushed into the job that he didn’t want / wasn’t ready for. I don’t think there was ever any hatred or malice for him when he was here.

That ‘3 draws is the same as a win’ quote is still legendarily stupid though.

You may be right he may have learnt his trade during the five years since managing us but looking back not many would have predicted he would become a decent manager

It's up there with Paul Hart trying to convince everyone we played with 3 strikers.

Or multiple quotes from any Scott Lindsey interview.

I also witnessed some of the abuse when sat in the Arkells, stitched up by Power and Sherwood and no wonder the guy was showing signs of stress towards the end. Fair play to him for giving it another go when it would have been easier to carry on coaching.

But by god the football served up nearly sucked the football supporting life out of me. Obviously things have changed now as its actually successful.

I thought after signing Kinsella he’d be a mainstay of the team. Flynn hardly brings him on off the bench and towards the end of his tenure at Walsall wasn’t picking him there either. I know we’ve played pretty well without him but I’d have thought he’d be ahead of Cain in the pecking order.

Are all the kids out on loan…?
I think the kids had a game earlier today against Boremuff so were all needed for that.

So it makes me wonder if this is an overnight illness for McEachran or a late injury or they would have pulled one of the kids out of the game I would have thought to fill the space on the bench.

I never understand why they don't just stick a youth team player on the bench in those circumstances, even if they've no intention of playing him. Got to be good experience I'd have thought.... and on the face of it, the squad situation wouldn't look quit so desperate...

Edit: PV just answered my question...

Bit similar to Morecambe in that it's a competitive game with one moment of quality for Town at the top end giving us the lead.

Kemp is a Rolls Royce of a player.  I don't think there's any chance of keeping either, but if it was him or Young it'd be Kemp for me.

Dokes and Khan looking good, Hutton lots of crosses but nothing finsing its target, about 7 corners, all poor.

Brewitt making some decent blocks.

Solid but still could go either way as Grims are still capable of hitting us on the counter.

Decent half.

Grimsby strong and well organised and we are playing to their strengths when we going forward annoyingly. They look much more panicked when we run at them. RHM on for Young before too long for me on that basis.

Uwakwe and FBT looking out of sorts which is making the left hand side a weak spot for us.

Some cracking blocks from Brewitt.

Khan excellent. He's really grown up this year. Doing a great job.

Cain doing a decent job but we are missing our midfield fluency that McEachran contributes to.

Brilliant strike from Kemp. As sweet as can be.

Tend to think most of our defensive issues this season have been system problems rather than individual poor performance, but this is definitely a player having a bit of a mare.

I do think people underrate people's ability at set pieces compared to open play a little. Austin defends set pieces better than most of our centre backs! Similar with Gladwin last year, who couldn't defend in open play at all but was our best defensive header from set pieces. Obviously it would be ideal if he could still move in open play, but that's what RHM is on for I guess.

Title: Re: Swindon Town v Grimsby pre match drivel and matchday thread
Post by: theakston2k on Saturday, September 30, 2023, 15:37:39
He's on to head away corners, not for his movement.
Part of the reason he’s having to head corners is due to his lack of movement, we can’t keep the ball up the pitch. You can’t keep a passenger on just for defensive corners, but obviously there’s no option now.

Three more points, third, one point off top with a game in hand, best goal difference in the division. Not sure I feel as good as that sounds but I'll absolutely take every part of that first sentence. Come on Town.

Hallelujah. Far from vintage but take those three points all day long.

Slightly concerned about the squad depth.

Interesting that Flynn fancies Shade at LWB off the bench. I thought Genesini was very good there against FGR and that would free Shade up to be a physical presence off the bench up top to give Chaz a rest, as much as he is crucial defensively at set pieces. That said, Flynn watches them every day and clearly knows what he is doing!

Flynn (Sorry, had some family stuff to do so a little late):
- Team stuck together
- Wasnt a good second half, but we have played better and thrown points away
- We dug in and made blocks
- Pleasing win as you cant win everything with total football
- Could have been more clinical
- It was a definite penalty
- Grimbsy threw everything at us.
- Pleasing win
- Great move for second goal. As was the first
- Cain's finish is as good as you'll ever see
- Pleased with the way that Cain kept the ball moving. We need to get some more physicality into him
- Dokes and Hutton were unplayable today. They have a great understanding. Decision making was good too. Dont know how teams can defend against them when they are at it
- Unbelievable save. Their keeper made one from Shade too
- Bit of a relief when the FT whistle went
- Started sloppy 2nd half. Got control and scored then had a second chance. Then we were apprehensive, bordering on panic stations
- A bit frantic which played into their hand. They put the pressure on
- McEachran was ill this morning. Didnt want to risk him or spread it within the group
- Cain has put pressure on McEaschran. Kinsella is also fit now. Toss up between Cain or Kinsella. Thought Cain would move the ball quicker
- A lot of games coming up with Sat and Tues fixtures. Will mix it up for Reading game.

He can cross a ball. I'm not convinced he's a wing back who can defend, but I trust Flynn to improve him with time.

Looking back at his season at Crewe he was pitched into every position Iandolo style, so maybe a run in one position will help - https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/tariq-uwakwe/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/396854/plus//saison/2022/wettbewerb/GB4/verein/1042

I think Uwakwe looks good when we are flying but he doesn't seem to like a physical battle and they seemed to be targeting him.

If Clayton was around you'd maybe slot him into LCB and push Frazer out there if that happens again. As it is, we have to make do!

Really well ground out win.

Liked bringing on Minturn and going to a back 4 to close it out. Wish we'd down that earlier/in other games

As others have said, left wing back is the only hole in the team. Uwakwe, Shade, Genesini, Ward - we definitely tried throwing enough shit at the wall in the last week of the window hoping something would stick.. but it hasn't

I’d go as far as to say the best performance by a LWB this season was probably Genesini away at FGR and I don’t think he’s played since.

Fjortoft summed it up perfectly on the radio post-match - wins like that are great to put in the bank, so you know you get bag 3 points when you’re not firing on all cylinders. Invaluable if we are to do something this season. The class of Kemp and Khan shone through, a brave save from Mahoney at 1-0, and a lovely finish from Jake Cain (not for the first time…). Cain may not buzz around as much as McEachran, and I think we lose a bit of his energy in the middle when he’s not there, but Cain has more goal threat. Onwards and upwards.

Despite the pressure in 2nd half didn't really get the feeling that the 3pts were ever in doubt.

Thats a bit harsh, he has played 3 very good games for us and he is only 7 games into his Town career. In a couple of games he has put much better crosses in than Hutton does yet got little credit, has 1 less assist than Hutton this season.

He is only 23 and raw, I think he will come good but he lacks consistancy and defensive quality, Iandolo managed 8 seasons in the same position without the ability to defend.

Yes, yesterday he had a mare but I won't judge him based on that alone. But he looked low on confidence, unsurprisingly so maybe give Genesini another go there for a couple of games?

By the way why wasnt Ben Ward on the bench yesterday? surely thats a total waste of a loan? is he injured?

Cheers Tans, I didnt hear his name mentioned in the walking wounded. We do need some strength but going by Flynn he wont just sign players for the sake of getting bodies in so I think we will have to manage until January with what we have got now.

I think this would weaken us. FBT is so important in how we play both defensively and attacking, Minturn couldn’t do what FBT does.

I do however think Clayton could fill that roll, I see Minturn as more as a Brewitt type.

Only 5 teams left unbeaten in the top 4 divisions after yesterday.

Arsenal, Spurs, Portsmouth, Mansfield and Swindon.

Highest scoring teams
Swindon (L2) (26 goals)
Barnsley (L1) (20) goals

Higest average goals per game
Swindon (L2) 2.9
Brighton (PR) 2.7

Highest goal scorer.
Jake Young (Swindon) (L2) 9
Devante Cole (Barnsley) (L1) 9

Most assists
Dan Kemp (Swindon) (L2) 5
Jodi Jones (Notts C) (L2) 5

Most assists+goals
Dan Kemp (Swindon) (L2) 13
Jake Young (Swindon) (L2) 13

Thats not bad going so far with many of those teams having played 1 more game that Swindon so far (excluding the Prem).

Happy to see Cain get a goal, definitely a player in there. Can’t add much more than what everyone’s said already, great to win without being 100% on it. Kemp is class, hope we can get him signed up. Uwakwe wasn’t on top form but he does put some good crosses in and we were told when he joined that he prefers playing CM/on the wing by Crewe fans so the extremely attacking wingback role we have him and Hutton playing was only ever going to be the role he was going to play from LWB. Khan very good, same with Brewitt.

Onto a very tough night Tuesday but we should go there with confidence that we’re more than capable of taking the 3 points. Although I saw Hutton’s “I can’t see us losing” quote so that’s the loss nailed on.

Not read back yet :)

Not as scintillating a performance as previous games but another important 3 points ahead of a tough run of fixtures this month. UGM's probing runs the main outlet although Khan's spins in midfield were a joy to watch and he ran midfield. Unfortunately Uwakwe was having a mare at the back and the ever reliable FBT also looked shakier than usual, he seemed a bit more restrained and wasn't getting forward as much as before. Pretty poor defending for their goal as well. Fair play to Mahoney also, didn't have a stack of work to do but did what he needed to, very well indeed!

I personally though Austin looked a little laboured, as always he keeps defenders occupied but he's beginning to look like he's struggling a tad. I think he'll need to be rested for a bit this month. The ever reliable RHM looks like a whippet waiting to be unleashed whenever he comes off the bench. Much needed pace against a very slow Grimsby backline.

3 points at home is all we can ask really. And the team delivered so fair play to them. Final word for Brewitt, he was excellent again, he's showing real consistency from a player many expected not to play much this season. Kudos to Flynn to get what he's getting from him as well as the player himself.

This 100%.

Many of our fans said pre season that they dont care how we win or astyle of play as long as we win, Saturday was a prime example of that, when you don't play well then win ugly but still win.

A little bit of an off day by current standards perhaps but I watched the full game replay yesterday and we still managed to play some great stuff at times. It was a joy to watch compared to some of the insipid, timid, gutless dross we had to endure at times last season. It's also a breath of fresh air after all that Garner Ball bollocks before it...

We werent as sharp as previous games and did ride our luck when the Mariners came at us.

But...3 points.

What was noticeable is that Grimsby had a go, instead of setting up to break up play etc etc. Probably where Walsall went wrong.
