I dont think Barnet are as bad as some may think. They do have one of the top scorers in the league in the form of Mcleod. I still think we have enough to win though. Flint back, stick with the front two. I would like to see a better option used on the left though, ideally Gabilondo.

Much tougher game than a lot of people expect today.

Barnet have gone to Pompey and won 1-0 in the LC 1st round, won 1-0 away at Morecambe who beat Creepy Crawley 6-0, drew away at Rotherham (then leaders), won 3-1 away at Colchester in the JPT.

A better team on the road than at home.

I am going for a 1-1 draw with a 7,248 crowd with barely 200 from Barnet.

I have got a mate who has just started taking his son to watch Barnet, nearest local team for him. Plus kids get in for nothing. All good so far, they have been to a couple of games but have yet to see Barnet score. Based on this I am going for a 3-0 win for us.

Words of wisdom here....if we are to do something this season, then we need to get on a long unbeaten run.  If it's going to happen today will be a pretty good indicator...as JJ says it's going to be difficult.

I fully agree with that, dull or not we need results, especially at home, win your home games and get a few wins/draws away from home and you will get promoted, we did it that way under Sturrock, not overly pretty to watch but scrape out wins by one goal and I will be happy witht hat, not sure all the Town fans would be the same though.

If you are in the Arkells then dont forget to take the zimmer frame :) or at worst a walking stick to wave at the referee, that seems the norm up there!

I'm already looking suitably unkempt and smell faintly of tobacco. I'll remember to bring a stick.

It sounds as if Magera will be on the bench then so Flint/Comazzi in for McCormack sounds like the only change. I maintain my 6-0 prediction :)

Oi I sit in the Arkells and don't fit that description, although the little group of old boys who sit in the row behind me certainly do

We ha :Dven't drawn a game yet, so I've a feeling we might today 2-2.

Swindon Town: Smith P; Caddis (capt), Devera, Comazzi, Kennedy; Ritchie, Ferry, Smith J, De Vita; Connell, Kerrouche

Subs: Lanzano (GK), Abdulla, Flint, Magera, Storey

Smith returns, no start for Flint ??!!

No wingers in the squad either.

Title: Re: Swindon v Barnet official matchday thread

The way that De Vita and Ritchie are playing as opposite side wingers coming inside instead of taking players on down the outside it does pull the width right in but leaving the fullback to overlap.

Very tight at the top.  I think we could be top 3 with 3 wins from the next 4.  I see we're joint 2nd with Gillingham on goal difference behind Morecambe.

Cuthbert's move to Leyton Orient looking more & more inspired.  Not even the end of September and they're practically dead & buried already.

That was boringly easy haha.

Thinking back to 1995/96, our campaign that year was full of performances like that.  Routine wins.  Three points, & move on to next week.  We have to keep this going.  4 wins from 5 is a decent run.

Target #1 is now restoring our traditional league superiority over Oxford.  (Just one point in it now.)  And then we take this division apart.  We should fear no-one.

But equally being Swindon I would not be surprised if we lost to Macclesfield next week - for as long as I have followe town they have lost games that should be won easily!

I'm probably being a bit thick here, but what are you talking about??

That was boringly easy haha.

It was boring but I'd settle for another 30 odd games like that. I think most of the crowd fell asleep half way through the second half, we were that dominant (without much goal mouth action).

Now we have to sort out our away form. I mean, if Plymouth can beat Macclesfield..... 8)

Oh absolutely! I was just coming back to say that I would take that all season long :D

Thought everyone played well after the first 10 minutes, Comazzi had a couple of funny moments in either half, Devera was solid, Kennedy was a beast at set pieces, Ritchie and Caddis were their usual troublesome selves, Raffa had another good game on the left, Kerrouche was his usual self, Ferry and J Smith were hustle and bustle, kept it nice and calm, got back and defended in the box well also. Connell worked hard without getting anything clear cut infront of goal.

Decent lads, decent.

How can winning 4-0 be boring as I heard some say. The team is begining to take shape but would always play Flint at this level. Smith now has to have a decent run in goal even if does make occasional gaffs.....I heard Di Canio on the radio afterwards saying he is lookking for another striker....dont really understand that.
Barnet very poor and they are going to struggle this season, without doubt...4 goals can`t remember the last time that happened...maybe someone will remind me.

I'll be honest, I thought we played OK in the first half but we were excellent going forward and deadly with our finishing. I think we played better against the Pox and Rotherham. This is a good sign. Nice to see their players having a go at each other, and how come they were back on the pitch so soon after half time, I went to get a drink and they were there when I got back.

Second half we totally dominated. The game was dead an buried but we tried to go forward.

Still think the defence looks a little shaky though!

Nice work STFC, nice work.

Connell didn't have anything clear cut in front of goal??  What about the one on one with the 'keeper when he fell over as he was about to shoot!!  Thought Ferry dominated midfield, Smith had a good game, Caddis was excellent, infact everybody played their part though Comazzi looked a little bit suspect and his distribution was not the best.  The stupid Adver was comparing Ritchie with Mark Marshall - no contest was it?

Really enjoyed today,i know i bang on about it but Di Canio is the man...five points behind the leaders now and really have a chance of winning this league.
De Vita played well and after his early season critics seems to be getting his head down, the whole team played well and to be honest my man of the match would have been De Vita...good goal and a solid game.
Di Canio will have many critics because of his team selections but i applaud his honesty and passion, however misguidede they maybe at times.

PS....Leefer predicted 4-0 on the prediction league :D

Our defence still looks shaky but it was like Adams, bould, Winterburn and Dixon compared to Barnets' whose defence was truly shocking. Apart from the first minute, Barnet were pure bollocks.  A very professional job done on them and could have had 7 or 8.
How the hell did Barnet have 178 there - would have guessed half that.

Marshall looked pretty ordinary to me. The only one of theirs i thuoght looked remotely decentv was the bald bugger in midfield. Their no 21 was a good laugh though - useless at crossing and Kerrouche got him easily booked.

Does anyone know what Sanchez was on at half time. Stayed in the dugout until last 5 minutes then went in and 20 seconds later Barnet were on the pitch hanging about for ages waiting for us and the ref to appear, bizarre.

All very odd, I felt quite sorry for the team to be honest, they must have felt a right load of twats back on the pitch after about 8 minutes!  My dad commented that he'd be surprised if Sanchez was still their manager on Monday, as he clearly didn't seem interested.

The first 10 minutes we were all over the place and De Vita's goal was completely against the run of play.  Probably justice for Burton last week.  After that, there was only really one team in it and I can't really fault any of the players today, they all played well.

Ritchie was deservedly MOM, but I agree with Chalkies Shorts, he can be very greedy at times.  It's key that we hold on to him through the transfer windows and that might be difficult.

The last 15 minutes or so were rather strange, considering we were winning 4-0, there was no atmosphere.  I know what people mean when they've mentioned 'boring', it was almost too comfortable.  However, even at 4-0, there were still people behind me moaning and getting on at players when a pass went astray.  I'm not sure what more they want?

And a separate moan, especially for Leefer because I know he keeps an eye on the food prices/standards.  I paid £1.50 for a portion of chips for my son at the Rotherham game, today I was charged £2.00 and the portion was pathetic.  I'm not sure how the club can justify that sort of increase?

Got to say that the food/drink side of things is poor, price wise and quality.

To be honest it is best to eat before you go in which is a shame because the club need the revenue.

Thought Marshall just got frustrated to early on in the game as he obviously wanted to make an impression, I know he was really looking forward to coming back for today's game but it couldn't really have gone any worse for him. Thought Leach for them also looked quite good. Don't know if we even hit fourth gear today, it was a good professional team effort.

Rightly or wrongly, I've always found it very difficult to warm to the mercenaries who turned up at the County Ground in early 1994 as our Premiership season was fizzling out.  Brian Kilcline. Frank McAvennie, Lawrie Sanchez...none of these names have any resonance with Town fans these days.  They turned up, they left.  It was all over by then anyway.  Wish they had never bothered.

Enjoyed that today, mainly due to the most comical defending I've seen in ages.... it was spectacularly bad. Barnet must have really worked hard in training on some of their coordinated defensive mix-ups.... fantastic fun.

The bit in the first half when two defenders converged on the same loose ball was stupendous...the drama was palpable when they ran towards each other - are they going just flatten each other? Everyone in the Don Rogers were on the edge of their seats.... and the defenders didn't disappoint by one of them simply smacking it against the other (pinging the ball out for a throw) - truely awe inspiring stuff...

All this plus the halftime pantomine was almost too much for my splitting sides to take...

Barnet, can we play you every week..?

Terrible opposition but we totally dominated in every position for 85 minutes.

Comazzi is unconvincing, I swear he used his shin to clear the ball at least two or three times during the game. Ferry and Smith controlled the midfield.

If Ritchie is still here in February then I'll eat my hat.

Do you reckon Ritchie will want the move or do you think the club will cash in come January? Surely if we are that serious about promotion we need to keep Matt on board. Ritchie is getting better by the game now and could really be the difference between going back up or not. He has stayed loyal to us after last season unlike most others who took the easy option out so I'm hoping he will see the season out. If we do get promoted he may well decide to stay with us.

I thought we had the game well and truly killed within 25 mins hence why the fans rested on their laurels... Shhhhhhhhhhhhh! Barnet were one of the poorest sides I can recall pitching up at the CG so it was great to see us put them to the sword emphatically. Ritchie was utterly sublime today and I didn't blame him for the odd bout of greed given he was on a hat-trick. Thought Mehdi Kerouche was top drawer both up front and when deployed wide right. Special mention for Phil Smith who played like a man with a point to prove. Nice to also see Magera back in action albeit it very rusty.

This is an excerpt from the match day article on the Barnet site...........

"Kerrouche the Swindon striker seemed to have problems with the wind at the County Ground. Like a leaf from a tree he fluttered to the ground on numerous occasions, apparently unaware that association football is a contact sport."

.......Bitter much?

Hahaha amazing. If only Lawrie Sanchez cared about Barnet F.C. as much as the person who wrote that.

I enjoyed it. All the positives have been said.

Never have I witnessed an easier win watching Swindon or anyone else. Barnet were atrocious and we were really good at times.

Lawrie Sanchez sat throughout the game with his arms folded probably dreaming of his days at Northern Ireland. There's no way that his team talk could have been affective as they were stood in the tunnel a good couple of minutes before coming on to the pitch (which was also significantly earlier than Town).

Other than Ricky Holmes coming on for them I didn't see any other Barnet substitute warm up other than their half-time punt the ball into an open net from 10 yards out.

... and back to exile I go.

Like this from a Barnet Forum

Quote
Everyone who was at Swindon today saw what real passion from a manager looks like. How Sanchez could have sat there watching Di Canio and not felt utter embarassment at his own inactivity is totally beyond me.

Did everyone else see the size of Barnet's 'Fitness Coach'? Fuck me sideways, what a fat bastard! How can players take the bloke seriously when it's obvious he'd get out of breath running a bath!

Easiest win we'll ever get in the league yesterday and yes, it was pretty boring towards the end of the game, looked more like a practice match!
I thought he might just have been the sub goalkeeper!!!!!  Would have had trouble getting round him!!  Did anybody see Devera give him his Town shirt at the end of the game?

Loved the way that Barnet, after starting in a 442 that mirrored ours, went to a 451 with seemingly no plan beyond keeping the scored down. Once we'd worked out to double mark 22 at the back post as all their set pieces went there they had nothing else. Well, except to get the ball to Marshall and we could all work out how that was going to go - most over the stand.

The players came in the pub last night and I was on VIP bar. Ferry is a fucking legend, loves a drink. We had a Jagerbomb together and I told him that I love him a little bit. Alan Connell is funny. I was surprised by how many of the new lot weren't drinking at all. Ferry was the only one who was smashed.

Kerroooooshhh hasn't gotten used to English money yet, I told him it was me that started the On Fire chant and he loved it. So fuck you Samdy hahahah

I was exactly the same. It was a straightforward, effective win, where the opposition couldn't be bothered after 20 minutes. It was like winning a 100m race by strolling to the finish. There wasn't any champagne football, but we can't expect there to be. There was no tension,  but that's because we were markedly better than them, and there was little atmosphere, because it was like a training match at times. We were a little bit spoilt yesterday - in a bizarre way, I'd rather an end to end slog for 90mins and an injury time winner for 1-0.

Barnet need to get rid of Sanchez ASAP, the bloke clearly doesnt give a shit. Their fans do deserve better, fair play to them, staying to the end and still clapping their team off! Very loyal. Think there were quite a few Town fans who had a 4-0 Swindon bet, because the atmosphere went completely flat for the last 15 minutes, and that meant the players were happy to take an early warm down. It should have been at least 6 nil (not complaining, but we cant get over confident after this result). Barnet were up there with the worst league opposition I have ever seen at the County Ground, and the fact that they are not in the bottom 2 to me shows that the quality of the bottom half of League 2 has slumped in the last few years since our last season in the basement. As have some of the attendances. I did raise eyebrows when I heard Mark Marshall was Barnets best player. Some of the crosses booted into the stands seemed almost deliberate they were so unbelievably bad.

Hereford could well be simmilar in 2 weeks, and this time I hope the fans transmit to the players that they should show Hereford no mercy at all. Would love to see us put a few past the cunts.

The real test is friday. Burton was unlucky, and we cannot afford another and lose out on the points. We need to be hitting the top 3 in the next 4 weeks.

It was a strange feeling for the last 20 mins or so. We didn't really look like scoring loads more and it just became a bit of an anti climax. Looked like most people were just waiting for the final whistle. We can't have it all ways though. Fair play to the Barnet fans who probable deserve better.

oh yeah almost forgot. Who was the bigger git yesterday, the person who turned on the sprinklers as the Robinets performed, or the person who made them stay there until they finished?

It made me laugh all the same.
----
As did Fred Elliott, who first of all I thought was a homeless tramp slumped outside the DRS eating fish n' chips. He also proclaimed the opposition the worst at the County Ground this year - he does that every week!

He was right though. Barnet were shocking.

Excuse my ignorance, why do we have Friday night fixtures ? Is it the clubs choice or is it something to do with to many teams in the same area also having matches on the Saturday. Can't see how it can help either home or away teams in regards to supporters getting to the match. How long will it take to get up to Macclesfield Friday from Swindon, I can't leave until after 3 pm. Thanks in advance.

Macclesfield have done it for a while now, as have Tranmere... play a few of your home games on Fridays to attract people who would otherwise be watching the bigger clubs down the road.

Mixing of local traffic and long distance traffic flows never works.  One of the worst junctions in the country.  I do have an environmental conscience but, where omissions in the network are as glaring as this, you have to do something.  Build the Western Orbital Motorway (http://pathetic.org.uk/unbuilt/western_orbital/)!

No chance of this happening before Friday, though.

Barnet were the worst team I have seen play at the CG for a long long time, even worse than the non-league sides we've faced in the cup. But I suppose you can only beat what is in front of you and we certainly did that, very comfortably. For one reason or another, that was my first game of the season (apart from Rotherham on the box which doesn't really count) and I have to admit I was quite impressed. Ritchie was head and shoulders above everyone else, and apart from a few dodgy moments from Comazzi at the back, everyone else did alright. Got the feeling that we had another gear or 2 to go into as well if needed.

So what exactly happened at half time ? I rushed off to get in the queue for food/drink and by the time I came back up, both teams were on the pitch. Did notice Sanchez sulking the entire game in the dugout, and then one of their players came back on to the pitch at full time all on his own and sat down sulking. Really cant see anything good happening to Barnet this season, seem to be a club in a bit of a mess

Are you talking about Phil Smith? I thought he was more commanding in the area than he has been and was less 'flappy' at crosses than normal.
Saying that, he wasn't really worked much.

Agreed,
The Barnet 'keeper, on the other hand, was out of position for the first goal, threw the third one in, and went down too early for the fourth.

Yeah, it was Phil Smith.  Just seemed some keeper must have had something more to do over the weekend.  Maybe he built a good shed on Sunday and they're taking that into consideration as, commanding as he was on Saturday, he wasnt exactly tested
