What a bizarre move to say the least... didnt see this coming, we are fucked next season, we have no players...

at this moment in time we must only have about 10 or 11 first teamers left

Another contributor who got us to the L1 playoff gone. Bad. Felt he would bounce back with proper management next season.... right now we are going to struggle next season I think..... :(

Clear out and start again.

That's a lot of wages off the payroll. Now to get some quality replacements. The next few weeks are certainly going to be interesting.

Agree, Thought Cuthbert, Ferry and Douglas would give us a good spine in the team. Even JPM.

Yup - but then if not successful, noone can blame previous incumbents!

Should be an exciting few weeks.

@Gazza we are not 'fucked' - there are over 2 months until the start of next season...

If Douglas goes, I fear a relegation battle again..... Starting to think now we should have hired a manager who knows this level, Massive job now for an inexperienced manager who doesn't know L2. Time will tell though!

See where you're coming from, but I fear with Cuthbert we're throwing the baby out with the bathwater.  Unless of course the baby leapfrogged the side of the bath of his own volition.

Staggered by this. At his age he could have afforded to play at League 2 level. He's gone to Leyton Orient instead, I honestly don't know what he's thinking....

This news has made me harder than the Times Crossword!! :beers:

Major rebuild job in store for PDC but thats some wages freed up.

Cuthbert made some almighty fuck ups...two of which (minimum) cost us points...

Only any good with Greer holding his hand....

Also had a pop at fans after some shit performances (although i kept this under my hat and never made a fuss)... :-[

All in all...............fuck off! :smugfu:

Think this is probably right.

I doubt we could afford to trigger the clauses in his and Douglas' contracts, so had to negotiate with them as free agents. Can understand him choosing L1 football, no great loss anyway on last season's form.

Unfortunately the tables don't lie. They are in L1 and we are in L2.

Guess Paolo is going to get in an experienced no nonsense bull of a defender with Cuthbert's wage money. JFL and Cuthbert playing together in League 2 would have been horrific I would imagine, especially with Cuthbert's confidence very low after some poor performances and important mistakes. Fresh starts needed all round.

No disrespect to Orient but even with us in L2 its a bit of a backward step, We are surely a more attractive proposition than Leyton Fucking Orient. Shit Fans no atmosphere although they were just outside the playoffs.... Just a bizarre move really. Even in L2 we will have double the crowd they get and prob pay better wages.... just a odd odd decision. Maybe he just never had the bottle to play for a big club! :D

He's gone to a club that every season have the same target to avoid relegation to ensure they've met their objective. Hearn has said it a thousand times. League 1 is the best that Orient will ever be.

It's almost as if Cuthbert has taken the first offer that he's received.I can't see LO paying him
more that he was on at STFC (Their average attendance last season was 4500) and the money
from their FA Cup run and games against Arsenal, would have been used up in running costs already.

If you wanted L1 football next season Scott, you should have crawled all the way to Bramhall Lane!

Leyton Orient knocked on the door of the play offs last year, we got relegated!

By not activating his extra year and trying to renegotiate with him he owed us nothing to stay. The club will have been aware of him having other options and im sure they have replacements.....Well i hope so

Good point herthab. We know he is a good player with a leader alongside him but PDC has just seen the shit from last year.

Will be extremely interesting to see how PDC re-builds our squad, which is looking quite thin now. Have a feeling he may need more that the 5 players being suggested.

Also, it can only be good to get his (I would think) high wages off the bill.

Look at it in the long term though. Orient will never be more than a League 1 club. If miraculously they managed to get promoted they would come straight back down.

Shame, lots of unrealized potential.

Title: Re: Cuthbert gone too !

"I'm absolutely delighted to sign here," he said. "When I heard about the interest in me, I was really keen to come down here and get things sorted.

"It's moved quickly, I've had a chat with the manager and it seems like a great club that wants to move forward. I'm delighted to be a part of that.

"The manager's feeling really excited about the new season and after speaking to him, so am I. Staying in League 1 is great for me and I'm looking forward to getting stuck in now.

"That first season at Swindon was fantastic and it got me a lot of experience about being at the top of the division and pushing for the play-offs.

"Hopefully we can do the same this season at Leyton Orient and go one better than last year and get into that top-six."

Cuthbert joins Ben Chorley and Terrell Forbes in fighting for the O's central defensive slots and the former Scotland U21 international is looking forward to the challenge.

He continued: "I played in Scotland for a few years before I had the chance to move to Swindon and I spent two years there.

"I'm quite quick for a centre half and half decent on the ball and in the air. I just bring a different option to the manager and it's up to me now to get into pre-season, get fit and show that I'm worthy of being in the starting 11 at the start of the season."

There is one familiar face already in the O's ranks for Cuthbert, as Alex Revell enjoyed a loan spell at the County Ground from Southend in late 2009.

"I'm really pally with Alex and I got to know him quite well at Swindon," he added. "He came here last season and has been fantastic for this club.

"It's always nice when you have a friendly face when you first go into a changing room and I'm sure the rest of the boys will make me feel welcome as well."

Shame, lots of unrealized potential.

I got a bit pissed off watching lots of unrealized potential last season. We had a good season out of him and a shit one, who's to say the first one wasn't a one-off?
When the going got tough he, and a lot of others, were invisible.

No great loss.

Let them have our shit from last season. To be honest Cuthbert isn't actually that bad though. I'm more concerned about who we will be signing. If we really do have quality players lined up then we can afford to let the likes of Cuthbert and Sheehan go.

Title: Re: Cuthbert gone too !
Post by: cheltred69 on Friday, June 3, 2011, 17:07:16
I'm guessing that Bodin and others at the club would have had a good amount of influence on who was retained so it can't be just down to PdC seeing some horrors from last season.

Like most I really rated Cuthbert the previous season, but realistically we need to get an experienced CB in anyway (as all would agree) and with LJF and Flint in the squad we have more pressing need for spending the wage bill on strengthening other positions than paying what would be needed to get Cuthbert to stay.

A tough one which may turn out to be wrong in the long-term but as of now it's probably the bext short-term outcome.

I'm a little nervous about next season to be honest. I just hope Di Canio has the judgement he says he has and brings in the type of players we need for a promotion push.

We desperately need 2 strikers and a good, solid and experienced centre back.

This is pretty much how I feel. I must admit I had a feeling that we'd renegotiate a contract with him. Shame the sale of Greer clearly affected him so much.

As a few others have already mentioned, I'm starting to feel a bit nervous about the number of players going out the door compared to the number coming in. I realise there's still plenty of time, but there seems to have been a fair bit of transfer activity going on elsewhere. I just hope what happens in the next couple of months doesn't leave us feeling disappointed and concerned before a ball is kicked. Def need to get someone through the door asap to settle the nerves!

Was brilliant last year but clearly was unhappy last season and the comments about the fans did him no favours really.
His best mate plays(Revell) for them so he was off.
No point in trying to keep players who dont want to fight for the Town.
Incidently gettting rid of Revell proved costly, would have been good back up and who knows may have flourished.

Actually he did want to stay and was prepared to stay for a lot less than he was on this past season. However it was the club that decided not to offer him a contract and he found this out earlier in the week. I for one am sorry to see him go but hopefully Paolo has a few good prospects lined up

Funny how some people think. For me cuthbert is a good player, and signing the experienced cb to play alongside would have been good next year. yeah we had a shit season last year but why people are so keen to get rid of half the player that were part of the successful team the year before i have no idea. short memories i guess!!! Sheehan is as good a LB as you'll get in L2 and now cuthbert has gone and misun is who knows, we are miles short at the back.

I have to say i wasnt fussed about prutton or rose, i'm fussed about sheehan and cuthbert and will be shocked if we let douglas go, but the only thing thats going to change things is to see who PDC gets in, until then we've only gone backwards. fact

It's not a fact.

PdC has been promised funds to rebuild the squad and has got almost a month before pre season starts.
He (hopefully) knows what type of players he wants, both in terms of ability and mentality. Quite a few players proved they lacked the mentality aspect last season, so they're on their way.

Wait until July before you all start to panic for fucksake.

Dropping down to the basement lge dictates who comes and goes,Douglas will go,probably to Sheff Wednesday.
Sheehan was a liability on and off the pitch, not all the ticket in my opinion,as for Cuthbert once you have slated your own fans its always going to be Adios Amigos.

Dont look back, lets look forward, its more rosier in my humble opinion.

I would go with floribudas rather than hybrid teas as you usually get a better display.

Yellow is preferred, something like Sunflare.

Yum. Lots of analogies come to mind.

Danny Wilson - shrinking violet.
Paul Hart - poison ivy.
Scott Cuthbert - last year's binennial.
Charlie Austin - dandelion seed.

etc.

Good news, lets all get a bit 'thisis' and start naming with a degree of authority who these players are.

So,  its going to be Adam Barrett, and hmmmm lets see, the other is Alessandro Lucarelli (veteran Parma centre back)

If you went back to 2006 people were saying exactly the same about the likes of Ifil, Nicholas, Pook, Roberts, Smith, etc...  but all of them were regulars in the team that came back up.

Not saying they were great players but they could do a job with the right kind of players around them. Cuthbert needs an experienced head alongside him but he has a lot to offer in the right team.

I'm not bothered about Sheehan, Prutton, Rose, Dossevi, O'Brien et al but I do think that Cuthbert showed in his first season that with the right players around that he can be more than an asset to a club.

One poor season doesn't define a career, espeicailly at his age.

Saying that, despite the usual paper talk it's pretty clear that Cuthbert, like the rest of them, was keen to go so it doesn't really matter either way!

No one nor 1/2 dozen players are bigger than the club. The club was here before them and will be here after they have gone.

I agree entirely with this, other than the fact that Cuthbert wanted to go. How have you reached that conclusion? From what I've heard, Cuthbert was keen to stay on vastly reduced wages, but Di Canio decided he didn't want him.  Did we get a fee for him does anyone know? Y

We all know that an experienced CB is essential, but with Cuthbert going, we now need at least one more as well. I'm sure Cuthbert would have done the job in League 2 even if he wasn't first choice, so I see no logic in leaving ourselves having to pay out for somebody who is unlikely to be any better.

I'll be surprised if Douglas remains and then we seriously need to be getting in 7 or 8 players not 5!  Imo it will be difficult to get promotion at the first time of asking after such a complete rebuild.

My opinion is purely down to cynicism.

One week "I want to stay"

Next week "I've joined Orient, the project here looks great etc etc etc"

Same old, same old and all that.

The club have been very quiet regarding the departing players which in one way is good because they don't need the send-off and bad in the sense that we don't know what's happening.

Cuthbert praised his time at Swindon because of the friends he had made (plus the P-O's), that's the impression I have anyway.

One week "I want to stay"

Next week "I've joined Orient, the project here look great etc etc etc"

All of which, I think, is completely understandable when football is your profession.  You're being loyal to the company that's paying your salary.  I think we all know that the extent of Orient's 'project' is to stay in League 1, hope for another cup tie against Arsenal some time soon and hope that West Ham don't put them out of business all together with cut price tickets when they move to the Olympic Stadium (assuming West Ham stay in business themselves).  But nevertheless, Cuthbert is their player now...so he's going to at least feign enthusiasm for now.

Not too worried about this.

In simple terms, it's only worth getting rid of someone if you can replace with someone on a par or better.

I'm pretty sure that Paolo can replace last season's Cuthbert with someone better.

I'm not overly fussed. I must say there were only really 2 players i'd have wanted to keep from the current lot and that's Douglas and Cuthbert. Ultimately next season it's irrelevent but we are a bigger club. We have more fans, more potential fans, better catchment area, better board, better stadium (which is due to be redevolped).

Orient are in a higher division but no way are they a bigger club than us. No chance.

When the going got tough he, and a lot of others, were invisible.

No great loss.

Not saying we're worse off for him leaving, but we've missed out on a massive transfer fee because our whole team was bollocks last season.

Absolutely. LJF gets alot of unjustified stick in my opinion. Best ball playing CB we've got/had in a while. Just needs to hone his defencive skills.

Definitely.  In terms of long term potential, I think we have more going for us than most of the sides in League 1 next season.  That's why last season's relegation was so galling.  It never should have happened.  (But it did!)

I do agree.  As Big Shaun says, we've done it before (slightly before my time, mind) and many others have done it since.

I don't want to come over all Leeds/Sheff Weds, but always felt last season that we were one of the better supported and better run (to a degree) clubs in League 1.  In League 2, we will have a huge advantage over almost all of the other clubs in the division.  Paolo's job is to translate that in to results.  Swindon expects, PDC.  Total rebuilding job required, but you're going to be judged rather quickly.

He'd represented Scotland at every level from a young age apart from full international cap, he had spent a season in the SPL with St Mirren and was one of Celtic's most highly rated young players so yes he would have had a decent salary for sure.  As people have said since then hes given us one great season and one poor season so he is no great loss!

I wouldn't no,thats not to say that they are duff players,Caddis has shown glimpses of real quality but is much to inconsistant for me,as for Ritchie puts his heart and soul into his game and lge 2 may be a level he can really flourish so keeping him dosn't bother me at all but as i say if we had a completly new squad on opening day,it would suit me fine.

JPM will reap the rewards of a manager who will play him in the right position.
He was fucked around last season and indeed the season before...being forced to play in positions that are clearly not his style.....the season before last he was top assists in the division by a country mile and i will tell you this.....most lge 1 clubs will be looking at him if he leaves.

To be fair JPM has been a good servant to the club. That said 3 of the 4 seasons he has been here he hasn't been very good imo. The JPM of 09/10 though...yeah id keep.

Good luck to the bastard, personnally I dont think we will miss him, very poor last season and I think its a good idea to get rid of the palyers who were part of the mess. Who`s next...? McGovern I reckon...

For me JPM cuts inside too much looking for the ball and then drifts over to the opposite wing leaving himself out of position when he loses posetion, I would not be sad if he left and we picked up a few quid for him.
