Why do the commentators refer to Tottenham's game tonight being their first in the Champions League?

Surely the pre-group stages are as much a part of the Champions League, so their qualifiers would have been their first in the competition.

Pompey are worse, despite paying crap players on loan £19/20k a week...and they've got a certain AA 'helping' them.

Looking at a few of the crowd figures for the Championship this season (such as Millwall's 11,000 vs Reading last night), I think we would probably fit in there quite nicely one day.

A good mate of mine is a Watford fan so I went to this last night. City were absolutely shite. Worst team I've seen at that level for a long time.

I just wonder if Arsenal can last the season playing so well though. They always seems to slip up or drift away at some point.

Going back to Valencia last night.

Is it wrong that I thought it was nani at first? And I laughed ?

It's been a problem for them the last few seasons, we'll have to wait and see if Wenger has sorted it out. They look better this season and maybe they will manage the entire season, but I wouldn't put any money on it.

Still think that when they are playing at their full potential, like tonight, they are the best team in the world though Messi and Barcelona last night were pretty good.

By Alan McInally, who's watching the game for Sky, he's been outstanding.

I see Paul Ince's son has just come on for Liverpool.

Fair play to Northampton but a half-empty Anfield must take a little bit of the edge off.

Actually, forget that, a win's a win right?

Interesting question really - the League Cup has descended into being a second-rate competition in which Prem Lge teams field almost completely reserve teams or second-string anyway.  So, with more and more examples of lower league teams beating PL teams, what do these wins actually mean?  Is the humiliation of a Lge 3 not very good team beating, theroetically one of the top four clubs in the country, worth it for the PL teams?  It hardly builds up love between fans and team, and in a season that doesn't look too hot for either Liverpool or Everton, it is surely fuel on the fire?

Crawley must be right up there (with Basingstoke, Basildon, Gloucester, Guildford, Woking, Telford, Wakefield, Warrington...actually, I'm ruining my point as I keep thinking of more places) as one of the larger towns without a League club.

Hope the Dons win though.  We all want to see them up against the Franchise sooner or later.
