Title: Gus Poyet Post by: Reg Smeeton on Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 10:45:09 ...so Christian Roberts thinks Poyet's the man for the job in today's Adver non story.
Personally I don't....I know there's a school of thought that if he does well and clears off we'd be in a better position, but I want someone who does a good job and doesn't clear off. On Monday night on Sky.....they had Cliftonville v Glentoran. Steve Lomas pundit, was bigging up the managerial qualities of his mate Alan McDonald, who is manager of Glentoran. Could a Lomas/McDonald dream ticket be the leftfield solution that AF has hinted at? Title: Re: Gus Poyet Post by: Samdy Gray on Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 10:46:08 Well it'd certainly stop the infamous close season Steve Lomas rumour threads.
Title: Re: Gus Poyet Post by: Reg Smeeton on Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 10:48:54 Well it'd certainly stop the infamous close season Steve Lomas rumour threads. I like the close season....so I thought I'd start a Steve Lomas rumour to make it feel like June/July :) Title: Re: Gus Poyet Post by: trogladite on Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 10:51:44 Managers come, managers go. Who would of thought that,
a/ anybody would of come in for Sturrok so quickly. b/ he would of left at what could of been the first oppotunity after he's loyalty rhetoric. 6 months ayear of success beats a year of stagnation. Then ther's the money a depating manager under contract would bring in. In modern parlance, it's all good. Title: Re: Gus Poyet Post by: Sippo on Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 10:53:51 There's no loyalty in any business so why should a football club be different. You cannot blame someone if a better more lucrative offer comes along and they take it.
Title: Re: Gus Poyet Post by: Reg Smeeton on Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 11:01:40 There's no loyalty in any business so why should a football club be different. You cannot blame someone if a better more lucrative offer comes along and they take it. All very true, but in today's world there are figures who are perceived to have done well, because of their media profile, and other more low profile figures who do a similar job and are largely overlooked. The fella at Blackpool Simon Grayson, is the sort of thing I mean. Long time Leicester left back, and probably a few others that I can't think...that's what I mean by low profile....turned Blackpool right round, worked on a shoestring at a building site rather than a ground, and has kept them up, on gates similar to ours. If it had been Gus Poyet...he'd have been gone from there by now. That's what I think AF had in mind with MM, so it didn't work out, but I think the strategy is right. Title: Re: Gus Poyet Post by: Bob's Orange on Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 11:03:14 Talking of loyalty I see that Dario Gradi is going to be back in charge in the manager's role for Crewe from Saturday. Cue their revival and we play them soon as well!
Title: Re: Gus Poyet Post by: Jamiesfuturewife on Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 11:05:51 Surely Christian Roberts is a bit biased Seeing as how Dennis and Gus
a)sorted out/supported him with his rehab b) offered to buy hom a holiday if he scored some goals Title: Re: Gus Poyet Post by: Sippo on Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 11:07:05 But if the right contract is in place then that'll will be a bonus. At the moment I think we need someone to lift the players. Someone who the players will respect, be that a no mark or a 'name'. Aslong as the players respond.
That blackpool ground is shocking. Wasn't it the week before we played them last, that a fan fell through the away 'stand'?! Title: Re: Gus Poyet Post by: Reg Smeeton on Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 11:08:54 Talking of loyalty I see that Dario Gradi is going to be back in charge in the manager's role for Crewe from Saturday. Cue their revival and we play them soon as well! Gradi turned Crewe from a perennial seeker of re-election into a production line financially stable club who had short stays in the second tier....AF made the I think pointed comment that Crewe are the only solvent club in L1. I suspect though that AF's head may have been turned into going for something a bit more short term, in the probably misguided hope that it might stop the fans moaning so much. Wasn't it the week before we played them last, that a fan fell through the away 'stand'?! Every time (3 times) I go to Blackpool it rains. Each time as well I have been in different parts of their ground. First time, along the side in terraces when Invicible missed a last minute pen, then a quite awful 0-0 draw behind the goal in a stand so old it was untrue and then in that undercover temporary stand (technically the same part as the first time) for the 2-2 draw when Igoe got that fat guy sent off for feigning injury! Title: Re: Gus Poyet Post by: sonic youth on Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 11:11:09 Well it'd certainly stop the infamous close season Steve Lomas rumour threads. i'm not sure that is fitton's highest priority when looking for a new manager.Title: Re: Gus Poyet Post by: Reg Smeeton on Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 11:17:40 Every time (3 times) I go to Blackpool it rains. Fucking Invincibile >:( 11 of our last 13 games v Blackpool have been drawn since the infamous 6-2 defeat in 86. Our only win, 1-0 v a McMahon managed Tangerines, with a goal scored by Alan Young...his only league goal. [/quote] He did, but I thought Walsall also made profits on their last 2 seasons. Title: Re: Gus Poyet Post by: Rich Pullen on Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 11:47:11 I'd have no major issues with Poyet if he took over. It would add a bit of excitement to those easily pleased and those who don't think about the bigger issues.
However, with a mega experienced assistant manager by this side, it could work I guess. I'm not pro the idea but there are worse solutions, probably. Title: Re: Gus Poyet Post by: magicroundabout on Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 14:38:31 i don't want him here personally. Stinks of the wise earer and he'll fuck off asap.
yes there is no loyalty in football anymore but i think thats even more so with Poyet. Sour grapes here i'm affraid so would rather have Holloway as he shows some charisma which AF stated he wants. I think the lads need to go back to basics and start enjoying there football again and Holloway would do that. Title: Re: Gus Poyet Post by: Rich Pullen on Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 14:46:31 Ah a football topic has been brought back.
Although, I'm bored of this now! :D I imagine Crewe fans are excited about the possibility of discussing who will be taken over at Alexandra Stadium because they haven't had an external appointment since 1983. However in the last 3 years we've had Onuora, Wise, Sturrock & Malpas and it grows tiresome very quicky all of these "he could do a job/he's rubbish" debates. I used to belong to the thinking that "we can't have him because he'll leave sooner rather than later" but now I'm just not bothered - Fitton will go for the chap who'll tick as many of the boxes as possible and that includes what the fans would think. No decent articles have emerged either. Title: Re: Gus Poyet Post by: DMR on Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 15:31:45 Surely Christian Roberts is a bit biased Seeing as how Dennis and Gus a)sorted out/supported him with his rehab b) offered to buy hom a holiday if he scored some goals Or, that we were as good under them as we've been for ages? Title: Re: Gus Poyet Post by: Reg Smeeton on Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 18:01:27 MacDonald could go in goal! He could then join the illustrious quartet of STFC managers and caretakers, who have kept goal when outfield players. Andy Rowland Jimmy Quinn Adie Williams Apart from Quinn we won all the games if MacDonald is included. Steve Finney for manager then. PS think Reeeves did a game or two as well, but can't think which ones. Title: Re: Gus Poyet Post by: Frigby Daser on Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 19:10:36 If memory serves...v Brentford when Griemink handled outside the box
Title: Re: Gus Poyet Post by: Reg Smeeton on Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 19:13:43 If memory serves...v Brentford when Griemink handled outside the box I seem to recall a horror show game, which like so many recent games I've done my best to forget...we were possibly 3 down when Reeeves went in, and he didn't concede any more....may well have been Brentford. Title: Re: Gus Poyet Post by: Barry Scott on Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 19:28:41 I seem to recall a horror show game, which like so many recent games I've done my best to forget...we were possibly 3 down when Reeeves went in, and he didn't concede any more....may well have been Brentford. I'm sure i recall Reeves being in goal for a penalty, when the Keeper was sent off for what it was awarded for? This was during Kings reign and we were at home. This was taken towards the townend, and i'm sure it went in. So i suspect that could be the other occasion or i'm remebering the same occasion wrong. Title: Re: Gus Poyet Post by: Don Rogers Shop on Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 22:48:16 I am warming to the idea of poyet, just think he is the sort of bloke players would respect but also like at the same time. I think its important in the lower leagues that the players like and respect the managers.
Title: Re: Gus Poyet Post by: RobertT on Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 23:57:04 me too DRS. I have concerns over what influence Wise had vs him because out set-up seemed very Wimbledon when not in possession, but I've seen a suggestion of Gorman as number 2. If that could be achieved (I can't see it but you never know) then it would be a winner I think. Either way, going for Poyet would make the number 2 slot quite important.
Title: Re: Gus Poyet Post by: Bogus Dave on Thursday, November 20, 2008, 00:07:00 Gus poyet will not be our manager. Not now, Not never.
