Bump.

Headliners are, apparently, Neil Young, The Boss and Blur.

I shall be singing "born in the PMH" of course.

Id be very surprised if Neil Young headlined it. They've been after him for years but he hates festivals that have heavy advertising. Saying that, if he does, I'd try and get there.

Blur would be great and I think is very likely since they're playing some big shows next year. I would hope they wouldn't be stupid enough to book take that and if they did hopefully they will be greeted with a delluge of bottles of piss in a Daphne and Celeste style.

I see the recession isn't affecting the acne and angst riddled middle class youth of our nation. The cost of tickets is enormous....when I first went it was a free, or a few bob.

Last time I went, a couple of years ago I think, the crowd was mainly middle class 30-somethings. Weird. I think they were all crossing it off the 'things to do before you're forty and die' list.

Title: Re: Glastonbury 2009
Post by: michael on Tuesday, February 3, 2009, 18:15:05
Last time I went I didn't even notice anyone else, apart from the naked hippies.

That is how I roll.

Title: Re: Glastonbury 2009
Post by: Dazzza on Tuesday, February 3, 2009, 18:15:27
I like the crowds at Glasto always a good mix and very rarely a sniff of trouble.  I was going to hit a few of the events across Europe but the Euro has put paid to that for now.

£150 squid odd is a tad steep although certainly worth it for 5 nights worth of shenanigans.

Title: Re: Glastonbury 2009
Post by: michael on Tuesday, February 3, 2009, 18:18:32
It is, of course, the only place on Earth where I'll go for a dirty and then feel guilty for leaving my turd lying there in such squalor.

A couple of years ago I almost lost my wallet - containing a decent amount of cash and my plastics - down the long drop.

It does seem a little excessive but its kept in line with the cost of gigs, first time I went it was about £12, but a gig ticket then would be about £3. To see a decent headline band now it is probably about £40 so £150 to see all the bands etc there is good value in that context.

I really didn't care that much about who was headlining when I used to go a lot it was all about the "atmosphere"

Title: Re: Glastonbury 2009
Post by: oxford_fan on Tuesday, February 3, 2009, 18:52:08
agree on the value for money, i worked out that i'd paid about £10 per act, which is incredible value considering you'd pay four times that to see the big headliners.

that and the fact you get to see the artists festival performances, which are one offs and usually better than standalone gigs.

The Boss has today been officially confirmed as headliner.

Kanye West is strongly rumour to be performing too, as well as forum favourites Fleet Foxes and Duffy.

Is 2010 going to be a fallow year?

Title: Re: Glastonbury 2009
Post by: Jamiesfuturewife on Monday, February 23, 2009, 13:46:09
what does fallow mean?

Title: Re: Glastonbury 2009
Post by: michael on Monday, February 23, 2009, 13:48:37
Every now and then they have a year off to let the grass grow back. That is the fallow year.

Think of it like allowing your bottle of red to breath a bit before getting the best out of drinking it.

Title: Re: Glastonbury 2009
Post by: LucienSanchez on Monday, February 23, 2009, 14:03:36
It's 4 years on, 1 off... the last year off was 2006 so I assume 2011 will be fallow.

N*E*R*D are, supposedly, the special guests on the Pyramid Stage but can't be officially announced for some reason.

The Klaxons are one of the special guests at The Park.

I'm not going this year but if I do go again I think I might go down on the Thursday night or even Friday morning. The only time I did go we went days early and as the music hadn't even started there was nothing to do except sit around getting mashed. By the time everything properly got underway me and my gf were mostly burnt out (sleep deprivation etc) and didn't have the energy to trudge through the crowds in the rain to see different acts.

In an interesting twist on proceedings I am planning on doing the whole event without eating any  burgers.

It will be tough but I think it is entirely possible.

The question here is though should I have one tomorrow night as a last-supper-type affair, or is there a danger of me getting the taste for it and subsequently failing my big challenge?

Title: Re: Glastonbury 2009
Post by: Dazzza on Monday, June 22, 2009, 17:19:08
To be honest you’d have to be hard pushed to gorge on burgers anyway as they limit the number of burger vans on site.  Most of the grub is really good and six good small meals a day keeps the hangover at bay.

The Welsh Oggie is my favourite next to the lamb and mint pies.

What booze are you taking?  Boxes of Red Wine all the way for us with a few sneaky hip flasks of vodka.

I never forget buying  red wine off a dealer/hippy that came in your standard cardboard orange juicy boxes you see.  Tasted good though.

Oh nothing civilised, just lots and lots of cider. Possibly a supplementary stock of rum and coke in a plastic bottle, and another of vodka lemonade.

Bought myself a fishing trolley from some place in Cheney Manor to carry it all about on.

Every radio station is coming from glastonbury this year.  Radio's 1, 5 and 7 all reporting regularly.  Frankly its all getting on my tits!  Radio 1 seem to think glastonbury didnt exist without them.  Which it did.  It got worse when they came along.

Jackos death has give them something else to talk about which is a relief.

Havent been since 2004 (when I rather disgraced myself with due to jamesons whisky) and probably wont go again.

No, you're spot on.

Going back to the mid/late 90s you could wander into replay records in Bath a week before and buy a ticket over the counter...the beeb have fucked that royally - i've not been since the pre-regesitration bollocks has been in place. Still, every year I think "Fuck, wish I was there".

The talky bits on BBC are, but the music isn't, for which I am grateful. The death of Michael Jackson is not the world changing event some people seem to think it is.

Watching Maccabees at the moment, good stuff.

Michael Jackson's death is big news within music - simple as that.

Bands are at Glastonbury to big themselves up though, not a recently departed musician.

Like him or not, the media will annoy the world until the funeral (and maybe beyond).

I see a 10 year old has contracted swine flu at Glastonbury.

Its not the 60's anymore, a few hippies in a field. Its a full on festival, worth millions so they cram everyone in, far too many people with not enough water, toilets etc.

Kids shouldnt have to be in squalor like that, just so their parents can go to a festival. What do 10 year olds know about music anyway? Sometimes its the same with football as well. Not all grounds, not all games and not all stands are familly friendly. Common sense.

Take the kids to the beach. Not Glastonbury.

When the local news were interviewing people at Glastonbury on Friday there was a Woman who had her 1 year old Daughter with her! It's selfish to put someone that young into that environment just because YOU want to go to the Festival.

Nonsense ,Glastonbury is  a great place for kids.Ive not been for a few years mind but I believe there is a family Camping area and as for getting Swine Flu thats just as likely to happen in Birmingham as it is at Glastonbury.

Agree with Yeovil here. If he is now showing symptoms of swine flu then it is highly likely he contracted it before going.

I know festivals are for everyone to enjoy but if I was to moan about one type of U.K. festival goer it would be GCSE finishers. They're too hyper :)

I'm watching Blur at the mo - this entire Glasto (Pyramid stage anyway) seems to have been an exercise in time travel.  Was drunk last night watching The Boss.

She irritates everyone, including Zane Lowe, judging by the expression on his face.

Blur and The Boss, on consecutive days... oh my days. Nothing will ever top that for me.

Bruce coming on to do '59 Sound with Gaslight Anthem on the John Peel was also a particular highlight.

As gay as it sounds, it was a tad emotional - what a weekend.

Whiley fucks me right off. She talks as if she is some doyenne of music when she's little more than a shit Radio 1 DJ.

Every time she speaks it's all me me me. "I was speaking to La Roux yesterday and..." "I feel really privileged to see Blur" "I sniffed the penis of Tom Jones..."

Fuck off you squidgy-face cunt.

This might be moving off topic, but Simon Mayo is the best radio presenter in this country.  This is a fact.

Very good weekend.

Pieminister, by the Jazz/World stage, was my favourite on-site eatery, so much so that my traditional post-Glastonbury resolution is to become a pie-maker.

Anyone who has any good recipes/techniques please feel free to post them here.

Just recovering now was a cracking time and the weather was spot-on even the rain, which cooled things down.  Despite the fact I had to buy a new tent after I flooded on Friday morning!

Highlights had to be The Specials, Ray Davies from the Kinks doing an acoustic set and the Blocheads with Phil Jupitus on vocals.

Food wise the Welsh Oggie got my thumbs up.

There's one of these in Islington. Judging by reports on here it's about time I tried it out!

Further to Dazza's message, I had a Lamb Oggie, accompanied by a squirt of the ol' Houses of Parliament.

Bloody lovely it was too.

The Oggies represent good value at Glasto, at £4 ask them to put it on two plates & you have a meal for two at £2 each.

I tried a Thalli curry box too in the park field. £4 & bloody lovely. Friend had a Goan Fish curry which was also brilliant

Yes, there was also a lot of overpriced stuff too. I point blank refuse to pay £6.50 + for grub at the stalls to the right of the Pyramid stage whereas to the left the prices seemed more realistic
