AZ on Sunday. Sore arm, otherwise fine.
Found out that a couple of friends, both committed vegans, won't be taking up the offer of a vaccine. On the one hand I admire them for sticking to their principles, on the other there is disappointment that they couldn't set them aside at this time with a view to the bigger picture. They would have done their own due diligence and it wouldn't have been an easy decision given that both are vulnerable.
How do they feel when they swallow a fly?

Just said they had concerns. But yeah, animal testing would be the main one I guess. The presence of "genetically modified organisms" might have been an issue as well.

Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves? Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here? Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change? Crap!

Taken from the AZ info leaflet that is dished out prior to jab. I can see why some vegans or other groups might feel the need to do some background research or ask some questions to allay any fears. "One dose (0.5 ml) contains: COVID-19 Vaccine (ChAdOx1-S* recombinant) 5 x 10(to the 10th) particles *Recombinant, replication-deficient chimpanzee adenovirus vector encoding the SARS-CoV-2 Spike glycoprotein. Produced in genetically modified human embryonic kidney (HEK) 293 cells. This product contains genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The other excipients are ..... etc"

I stand erected. I won't pretend to understand their POV, but I guess it's their decision (for now).

If their concern is that that means it contains ingredients from chimps, they've misunderstood. The AZ vaccine is developed with a vector that is derived from a virus originally found in chimpanzees, but it doesn't contain any ingredients of human or animal origin. Nor do Pfizer or Moderna. https://fullfact.org/online/AstraZeneca-vaccine-foetal-cells-chimpanzee-virus/Even PETA back this up https://www.peta.org.uk/blog/vegans-covid-19-vaccine/

I'll ask them, out of interest, next time we meet. Whenever that will be. It could be that the animal trials / testing may have been the show stopper. To be fair the mainstream related sites I've had a look at do encourage ethical vegans to follow the medical advice when it comes to the vaccine and support the info above re the ingredients. Better to stay healthy and carry on campaigning etc than the alternative.

Indeed, even PETA, who can sometimes be a bit out there, say vegans should take it on the grounds that the damage has been done. It's in the link I posted if you want to show it to them.

I had the Pfizer jab last month, and was fine the same day, but next day I felt nauseous in the afternoon, was very tired indeed, and had chills. Went to bed very early, was fine next day. Had flu jab October 2019. Caught Covid in April 2020.

Somebody might be interested that Mrs Normy and I were selected randomly to have Covid tests weekly, then monthly, for a year, by the Office for National Statistics, in conjunction with Oxford Uni. All negative so far. We are paid £25 a test .

It's probably best we just let Darwin's theories play out here.

I had the Astrazenica on Sunday, the sore arm didn't bother me, but it affected my asthma, gave me a dodgy tummy and felt crap for 24 hours or so. However all fine now, and grateful i've had it.
