I hoping for recommendations for a new dog and bone.... anything that isnt a Samsung.... any suggestions as all I can see are phones with integrated battery's (currently I have a desktop charger and a spare Battery)

Pros and cons are required rather than your answer.

It will be difficult to assess the reasoning and make an educated decision without this, bar the fact you think iphone 5 is yhe best

iPhone 5 pros...

Slim, sleek, light, very good on 4G (if you have it), decent camera, very responsive.

Cons....battery life could be better.

I find battery life a lot better on my 5s then my 4s. Even so my experience on smartphones is that the battery is generally a bugger if you play on them all day long!

Payg or contract? IPhone isn't my thing but screw paying the apple tax for an iPhone on payg.

iPhone if you're speaking to an Apple fan, Android (Nexus 5, S4, HTC One) if you're speaking to an Android fan.

I think all this Apple vs Android willy waving stuff is utter bollocks.

Apple make things nice and simple if you are not particularly adventurous with your electronic devices. I bought a couple of 3GS for my wife and sone and they are really chuffed with them (I've got to find a couple more now for the other kids!). Wouldn't pay the money for a new one as I don't think they are worth it. Also think everything else has caught up and in some cases surpassed the iphone.

Androids are more adaptable and better for those who want to play behind the scenes and want to play games and videos. Samsung Galaxy S4 looks like a monster of a phone/game centre/mini cinema but it has a monster of a price!

I, and my kids, have cheap Androids. We dont watch video or play games and do anything that stretches them too much. I make calls, send and receive texts and emails and browse the web. What more do I need!

My point was that iPhones on PAYG are very expensive. You can get as powerful/more powerful phones for half the price (or less) if you can get used to the Android OS.

If its bundled in contract then its a different game, horses for courses and all that.
