I would just say that these kids are taking what they can from society with the means available to them, just like the millionaire who doesn't pay his taxes, the MP who fiddles his expenses or the banker who pockets his massive bonuses while plunging the nation into financial meltdown. It's the product of a society that celebrates selfishness and materialism above all else.

The difference being that:
The millionaire uses legal tax avoidance loopholes.
The banker receives bonuses legally
The MP's receive their expenses...oh wait....

Seriously though, the first two are within the law and while you may or may not have an opinion one way or the other on them morally, looting and rioting is just plain criminality.

Side point, but it was claimed on the radio last night that as far as the Met knew the only force trained to use water canons were in Ulster. Which was a surprise to me.

Thanks for your views, genuinely interested to see what you have to say.

I'm not really sure principles are going to solve the problem, but I admit I (deliberately) asked a pretty huge question. It seems a bit idealistic/utopian to say what we need is for a common acceptance of moral values... Yes these people who are rioting are marginalised/ignored/'formed' by social and political processes which leave them in situations with few prospects... but at the same time these people are still relatively wealthy in relation to the majority world. It doesn't matter how well off our country becomes, the fact that some are better off will always cause frictions and resentment amongst those who feel they deserve more - even (or especially) when they don't!

I've gone down a bit of a random unstructured train of thought there, but basically my point is that no matter what we do I can't see a time where moral values (as characterised by non-agression) will ever be upheld across society - people are by default too proud, envious and selfish

Its not the same thing at all. Looting is a criminal act, vandalism is a criminal act. Arson is a criminal act. All against private corporations, independent traders and individuals.

The bankers and the tax dodgers are certainly immoral with their practices. But are not breaking the law. The MPs mostly the same.

This is not some little poor boy sob story, its criminal activity.

I stand by what I said. The law is not my only guide when making my own judgement on what is right or wrong. The looters are cunts, but no more or less so than the others mentioned just because their actions fall on the wrong side of the law.

I judge the arsonists more harshly because of their apparent lack of concern for human life.
