But it didn't happen under his watch so what he says is fair enough - 200 people have lost their job today - to save one woman's job - over something that isn't their fault - it occurred years before most of them worked there.
No it didnt, was going on untill very recently in fact, and i bet every one of them new it was going on as well, with the stings and traps i say good riddance. Lets hope the government bring the police to book now.

If anyone wants a good chuckle watch Hugh Grant explain how bugged Paul McMullan and caught him admitting how this was going on, police were being paid, etc. The very last few moments are particularly amusing... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-14052690

I stopped buying papers a long, long time ago and not just because I moved abroad.
I remember the exact moment it all clicked.
It was when Diana died, so I must have in my early twenties at the time. Was on a bus going to town and there were these old dears gossiping and nattering behind me. I wasn't really paying attention but I did hear "oh I know. The Monarchy can't carry on now"
It all just fell into place that it wasn't their words or opinion, but that of (insert red top here). I wanted to ask the what THEY thought and WHY. Of course I didn't ask, but just left feeling quite annoyed.
I've never bought a paper since.

Of course I didn't ask, but just left feeling quite annoyed. I couldn't agree more. I have never read the Daily Mail in my life, and yet I could tell you exactly what they're writing about on a weekly basis because my nan co-opts it word for word as her own opinion. I do read papers, but I try to read a variety and not just accept the opinions put forward as the gospel truth.

i read the times and sunday times because atherton is the best columnist going about, paul kimmage does the best interviews, neil harman the best for tennis. whilst hugh mcillvaney, oliver kay and matt dickenson are very good as well. but thats for sport and is really irrelevant in a thread for this..

Alot of comparing this sleaze to the MP robbing us blind.
MPs like to have a dig now the Media is in trouble...
IMO
The Gutter press is just that....however, i choose to buy a Newspaper if i want one, those robbing fraudsters in Westminster take my money whatever....so no comparison for me..

I'm a hypocrite as alot of what newspapers do makes me feel angry towards them, yet i still buy them. Recent events that have been disgusting imo were the treatment of the innocent landlord in the Bristol murder at xmas, and the treatment Sharon Shoesmith recieved in the baby P aftermath. Disgraceful treatment of individuals which their knuckle dragging readers would take as truth.
Maybe a total shake up of how newspapers conduct themselves is needed?

They were quite right to go after Shoosmith. She wouldn't take responsibility for what went on in her Dept. Same as this woman who was in charge of the NOTW. Only difference was that a baby was "murdered" whereas with the NOTW the victims had already been murdered. Of course it can be argued that in both cases the real culprits are the ones who actually did the deed.

I think the biggest and most worrying thing in all of this is how much power News International has. There is a fine line between freedom of the press which I encourage and out and out blackmailing politicians, the same people who we should have faith in and trust to run this country properly. The relationship between certain media outlets and politicians should be investigated properly.
We all know there is a moral standpoint of which newspapers don't necessarily comply with but more worryingly when there are allegations made of police bribery, threats to a number of individuals associated with politics, with politicians living in fear of questioning these people because of what they might do in retaliation.
The politicians and the law should be above media outlets, not the other way around.
Hopefully, like arriba said, this has to be the time to have a complete overhaul of the press in this country, or at least find a way of stopping this happening again. I honestly think they hide behind the 'freedom of the press' to go out and do just what they want, no matter if it's legal or not.

i don't understand the mega excitement over an exclusive etc...people generally have a set paper or two they read...would anyone actually be swayed to buy the notw as a result of their superb investigative journalism?

Despite abandoning the bid (for now), this could be a great opportunity for News Corp as the BSkyB share price is plummeting so could just sweep up a load of shares for much less than what they were proposing.
They've already spent $5bn on a buy-back of News Corp shares.
Quite a canny bastard, really.

That's insider dealing/market abuse and they'd never get away with it.
