Anti-Virus Software (only have one anti-virus installed and in use)

AVG free edition – A popular free anti-virus and anti-spyware program combined. Every bit as good as a paid for anti-virus.

Avast Home Edition - Another high scoring free antivirus including the famous GMER anti-rootkit technology. Requires registration to obtain a "free" license key.

Anti-Malware/Spyware/Adware Software

Malwarebytes Anti malware – Excellent tool to remove malicious software.

Superantispyware – Will scan for any malicious software, spyware/adware and threats and then remove them.

Trend Micro HijackThis (for more advanced users) – Scans your registry and running processes and outputs a report which you can analyse on the HijackThis website or get a geek to do it for you. A good tool to ensure your computer is clear, before and after scanning with other programs.

Hard Disk Drive Cleanup Tools

CCleaner – Removes unused files from your system which allows Windows to run faster and frees up valuable hard disk space. Also clears internet history traces for most browsers.

Revo Uninstaller – Uninstalls unwanted programs but makes sure as much of the folders, files and registry entries are removed as possible. Useful for keeping your hard drive clean and performs a much better job than Windows Add/Remove Programs.

Auslogics Disk Defrag – An alternative tool to the integrated Windows disk defragmenter and is faster at doing it.

Alternative Web Browsers to Internet Explorer

Firefox – A popular alternative which can be enhanced with add-ons.

Opera – Another popular browser with some handy features.

Email clients

Thunderbird – From the makers of the Firefox web browser. It’s better than MS Outlook.

Office Suites

Open Office - Office suite which allows you to create, open and edit MS Office documents e.g. Word & Excel
