The weekend between my bird's birthday (14th September) and my birthday (23rd September) we were planning to go to Cornwall for three nights. After looking at hotel prices (Fucking steep!) I innocently suggested a city break instead. London's been done to death, so I mentioned that Brum has changed a lot in recent years and is now a pretty good place for a short break.
We've booked 3 nights at a hotel on New Street. Train station is 5 mins away. We're playing Walsall on the Saturday. Job done.

Why not Austria instead, we're playing 3 games that week!
I think I stayed in the Macdonald hotel in New Street, despite the almost fast food chain name it was quality.

A league game v 3 meaningless, pointless friendlies? No contest Si. I think the hotel we're in is called the Britannia. She wants to go to a show while we're there. I suggested Sunday evening, not Saturday. As I will hopefully be pissed.

Impressive, but will this work? If I tried to do this with my better (looking) half, when I said on the Saturday morning while browsing the paper "oh look, Swindon are playing Walsall, what are the chances? It'll only take a couple of hours out of the day" she would say something along the line of "you bastard, you knew that all along, that's why you suggested coming Brum in the first place. There's no way you are going to that game, you sad, selfish arse." Not only would I not see the game, I'd hear about it for years on end. As would everyone else I know. Of course, if you can pull it off you're a better man than me.

I was pretty up front tbh. As soon as she'd bought into going to Birmingham I told her Town were playing down the road and suggested it would be the perfect time for her to do some retail therapy while I went and watched the football. If I had tried to pretend I didn't know until we were there, I wouldn't stand a chance!

In which case the Premier Inn or Jury's Inn are a lot closer and will be easier to get to and from the stadium, the Holiday Inn is over the other side of the city centre if it's the one I'm thinking of.
Traffic in and out of Southampton is a nightmare, especially on matchdays so getting taxis around match time may be more of a struggle.
I believe sutton's after a hotel in Swindon, not Southampton.

Oh, it's not very clear, especially with the Jury's Inn offer post.

I'd go with any of the main chains - whichever is the cheapest, plenty to choose from.
Talking of staying in Southampton for matches, I went down to watch them in the the UEFA cup a few years ago and stayed the night in a hotel with my bird - she'd found a decent deal in one of the expensive chains. Turned out we'd picked the same hotel as the opposition (Steau Bucharest), no good stories though as they were all well behaved before and after the match. A few of them were eyeing up my bird though, until I flexed my muscles and scared them off.
