Straight Outta Bassett doesn't seem quite as menacing.

I have a friend who's heart stopped/been resuscitated 3 times and have been in the vicinity of a death. I was also once on life support for 4 days, but didn't die or anything scary. Can't say anything changed me in anyway though. C'est la vie.

All of mine involve the police trying to kill me. Or at least trying to kill anyone in the crowd I was part of in a bit of an arbitary fashion. In ascending order of scariness they are:

3rd - Wapping during the printers dispute with Murdoch's News International - Arthur Scargill is down to speak at the biggest rally and march so far in the dispute. Whilst he's still on the platform there's an attempt to move some truks out of the plant and Scargill starts directing the crowd to block them off. There's a stalemate between pickets and the riot police for a good half an hour as the crowd is too big and too close for them to really smack people about. Then the horses arrive. And they literally gallop down Wapping highroad and smack into the crowd with long batons. Scariest scenes were:

What at the time I though of as a little old lady (but was probably 50ish) being battened round the head by a mounted copper as he rode past.

One of my friends being amongst several dozen pulled up onto the balconys of the flats opposite the green after being chased there by half a dozen horses.

A bunch of complete psycho riot coppers kicking in the door of the "Ivories" piano bar down the road, (where a strange mix of protesters and Kev and Sharons in their weekend best were drinking), and smashing the place to shit, leathering anyone in baton reach.

2nd - The march on the BNP headquarters organised by Youth against Racism shortly after the Stephen Lawrence murder .

OK we always knew that at a certain point of the march, (at the junction where a right hand turn took you to the HQ itself, and the left hand fork took you along the "official route") there would be some trouble. However, I was a steward that day and I still expected the majority of the marchers to continue along the official route.

That wasn't an option however, as when the march arrived at this point there were lines of police blocking both the turning towards the BNP "bookshop" AND the official route, blocking the marchers progress altogether. Again they kicked the crap out of anyone they could get hold of. A lot of stewards at the front had batons themselves and held the line for about an hour to allow marchers to retreat, but some nutters still kept pushing forwards. Eventually the crowd being forced back knocked a small cemetery wall over which fell on a bunch of protesters and the ambulances arriving kind of allowed some form of peaceful withdrawal.

1st - The so called Poll Tax Riots. I won't try to pretend that there wasn't a bunch of anarchists determined for a ruck on that day. But there were over a hundred thousand people there, many elderly or with kids. All of them, that didn't manage to fight a way out were forced into Trafalgar Square and subject to horse and baton charges. Loads of innocent people got smacked around. Loads of others that had no intention of being involved in violence when they set off that morning got drawn into it trying to protect themselves and their friends from the police. Horrible day.

I was at a swimming gala once which we one and the trainer got thrown in the pool, he had a heart attack and died right there.

I also saw my dad die in front of me but not in a sudden way or anything.

Luckily I've never been to hospital for myself in my life other than being born. *frantically looks around for some wood*
