Never ever pay main dealer prices if you can avoid it. I took my wheels to a garage for an oil change as its cheaper for them to do it than it is for me to buy the parts and do it myself (haven't we had this discussion somewhere else?). Anyway, they offered a free courtesy check, and quoted the following.

New drive belt - $250 fitted

New wiper blades - $50 fitted (WTF!)

Two new tyres - $300 fitted

Plus sales tax added to the above.

One trip to the Toyota dealer, a crate of beer and a hour of hard graft (total around $35) sorted the drive belt. Wiper blades $5 each, not exactly the most challenging task and two new tyres for less than $200 fitted, I saved myself a LOT of money.

To be fair it all needed doing, but always shop around, and if you're not sure, get that second opinion.

It's a common problem Al, dual mass flywheel made from low grade materials so it just breaks up and warps out of shape.

Fook me, that's appalling.

Buy a Vauxhall or a Ford next time.

I'm tempted to by a newish Astra SportHatch. Will this be a bad mistake?

I love those cars. For you I don't think it'll be a bad mistake, anything's better than that old Rover you've got  Wink

I'm tempted to take my car to a garage at the weekend and see if they'll do a straight swap for another car. Anyone know if places will do this? I would have thought they'd only take the car as part-ex?

I personally wouldn't, but my perspective is tainted by a bad experience with Vauxhall somewhat similar to Sam's current predicament. Repeat argument with Ford.

I haven't had a problem with Ford, the only problem I had was self inflicted on the car.

Sam,
Never, ever trust a main dealer. I was quoted £300 pounds to change the cam belt on my jeep and was assured by the bint in the service department that this was correct only to find that it is fitted with a cam chain! I took the case to trading standards and will let you know the outcome, needless to say that the dealers are shitting themselves.

not much to say about those two.

extremely reliable cars and well built.

Audi's do tend to be used by reps so watch out for high mileage.

what specs you going for? Budget?

Considered the Saab 9-3 Ash? Cheaper than an A4. Only down side is the Company is now part of GM (i.e. Vauxhall). Still well built though.

I wouldn't mind an A4, but my research told me Insurance and VED is too high for my liking, so a Mazda 6 it is for me!

Took the car back to Akers this morning where I bought it from. I thought the bloke would be a complete arsehole and say sorry it's out of warranty we're not going to do anything.

Fair play to him though, he's going to put new brake pads and discs on FOC on Monday.

He wasn't so forthcoming about the flywheel problem, mainly because we can't say it really is the flywheel without stripping the gearbox down and having a look. Same stands for Peugeot really, they're just saying it's the flywheel because of a noise coming from under the bonnet. Mr Aker's was very nice though and said if the problem gets worse he'll gladly take the car in and strip the 'box down to determine the problem, again FOC.

Happy days  Cheesy
