Please put me out of my misery.  When I go to my TEF Home Page, it says my Karma score is zero.  The actual score doesn’t bother me, but wtf is the Karma thing all about and what makes it change? ???

It was a silly scoring system where people would be marked up or down by other people.

We had to turn it off because some sensitive souls got upset by it.

A little like the Adver forum used to be thumbs up or down! +10 for the moderators always there when needed👍

Ardiles had more, from my limited memory. It wasn't a bad idea, but it did basically devolve into downvote (cunt-voting?) parties whenever anyone mentioned their score.

It's probably largely down to me trying to 'fix' it so it would go up regardless of what people clicked it. Just some trollish tomfoolery.

Didn't work though, obviously, and I just ended up leaving the counter as it was.

If you were on a positive score, you could not have been entering into what I understand to be the true ethos of this forum.

I like to think that almost none of my 12,000 posts on here have been remotely memorable, so that probably does it.

The karma thing was being abused. Calling that out wasn't due to sensitivity or being precious. I'm not anti it, but let's see who presses which button and when. Or better still have a debate, it's a forum after all. Call them a cunt via a reply, hitting a "you're a cunt" button anonymously is a cop out really.

This was my point but it seems like it was turned to me as 'you're being a soft cunt'.

I did kick off about the system but as you say, there was more to it than being a sensitive reaction. I'd much rather be called a cunt than underhandedly. It's kind of akin to the non verbal (or inaudible) bullying elements that go on at secondary school. The ones where kids will whisper to each other (they're saying nothing) but make out it is about another kid, then they'll point and laugh. It's high end cuntduggery.

The Karma then got abused by trolly types who would downvote at every opportunity (I'm talking Sir Dred Ken, Hobodan, Valid Pint, Mother Brown etc).  Then once Mods adapted Karma scores (randomly or not), to take the element away, it pretty much became more pointless. It never mattered per se but I guess if you were being down voted every time, regardless of what you posted it does become more counter-productive.

I know for certain, I would not post for a few days (this is true) and would then put one post on, almost as a test - writing something like 'oh that's great news'. Two or three cunt points would go on. Call me sad for ''testing'' that but I think those that did it were even more sad. Some did try to excuse it, saying different people read posts at different times etc, which of course is true but when you stop posting for 3 or 4 days then you know some accounts are just doing it for the saké of it.

A good tool, abused as with most half decent things. Still reckon it would have been good with a monetised element integrated in to it. Would change the dynamic and encourage people to write more engaging content but I think I remember Barry saying that he wasn't sure if SimpleMachines could facilitate it.

I used to give SRK a negative point everytime I logged on, or whenever I saw him post, whatever it was. Because he irritated me, intensely. I’m 100% sure he couldn’t have given a flying fuck so it was kind of pointless.

I’d bring the Karma score back because in all honesty, I think some posters have been writing some absolute tripe on this forum over the last few weeks, many threads have been hi-jacked and just turned into a fucking chit chat between certain members .
They’ve not even gone off topic the usual TEF way, it’s just waffling between certain posters and it always seems to be the same few.
I seem to have to scroll through a lot more bollocks than normal to actually find something related to the thread I’m in.

Of course, I think we mostly, all accept that people will have differing views from time to time but the kind of behaviours and approach, were like the types I mentioned above.

I don't accept that the TEF is as bad as places like Twitter or FB for absolute trollsnotting. There is at least some level of decorum, even if shrouded in a swathe of testes. Which my point being I found it odd, almost unhealthy that accounts would cunt point something that had zero provocation (congratulating someone on their new child or getting a new job) and even more oddly so when there had been a prolonged hiatus. I think you're intelligent enough to understand the difference?

I remember you saying BO but SRK and those similar accounts purely only posted to provoke and wind up others. Whilst I'm not a promoter of 'an eye for an eye', the known serial troll accounts (not talking posters who slip into an afternoon of trollsnottery on occasion) duly deserved a good ''cunting'' and being told that they weren't welcome. Especially when overstepping boundaries regarding racism, homophobic comments and other stuff that really should have escaped them once they left school (if they ever went). Just from my limited perspective, I was not bothered about getting c*** points even for, using that word again, benign posts.  I see it as part and parcel of posting to this type of forum - particularly as a relatively new member who is not part of the 'old TEF clique'.  

I am not sure that one's karma score was/is worth taking to heart.

It's like one of those awkward nights out where you somehow ended up in the wrong crowd.

Stuck with characters that can't handle their booze, making jokes that aren't funny but laugh hysterically regardless while oblivious that everybody around them is bored to tears and really not having a good time. The type that think they're being cool because they're being irritating in an 'oh, what are you like?' kind of way but the reality is that they're being irritating in a 'for the love of god, PLEASE just go away', kind of way.

In other news, the TEF has had more than 100 new members in seven of the last twelve months. Before this year it had only happened three times in the previous eleven years where stats are available (Sept 2012, Jan 2011*, May 2010)

There are loads of new members. Whether or not any of them are any good really is up to your own tastes I susppose.

* Jan 2011 had over 400, which is a huge outlier. I wonder if people had to re-register then for some reason?

I don't tend to log on in the evenings these days, just catch up in the morning and maybe a few times during the day if there are things going on..

Logging on in the morning and reading some of the stuff that has been posted overnight is sometimes funny, sometimes bizarre and sometimes tedious - but it is always interesting seeing somebody's online persona depending on the time of the day and (in some cases) the obvious amount of alcohol (other substances are available) that has been consumed..

I find myself having to read back some posts to understand what exactly the point was that was trying to be made - it certainly gets the brain working in some cases..

It's no different to listening back to prime ministers questions as the behaviour is the same!
