One of those games you’d think would be tough, but turns out to be a piece of piss.

0-2

That would be lovely!

I'm less confident. Think the result will be the other way about.

This will provide a pretty good pointer as to whether our good start is just a flash in the pan or if there is some substance to it.  My feeling is that the Yates situation shows up the lack of depth in the squad, so expect the wheels to come off.... typically Whaddon Road gets into the 3 game suspension.

May alongside Lydon, Doughty to 10, Anderson on the left with Woolery up top is my guess for a starting 11.

First time going to Exeter. Anyone know of a good place to park?

I reckon a draw would be a great result but we do perform against the good teams away so I’ll say 2-1 win

There’s a park and ride at Digby (head for services from j30) where you can wait for the bus or jump on the train into the centre. Stops at St James’ but you’d be better off going though to Central as there’s not many pubs around the ground. The ground is 10 mins walk from city centre.

I’d take a point, as I expect them to be up there. Some ex Town boys in Lee Holmes and Nicky Ajose, plus some that have a habit of scoring against us (Jonathan Forte), and handy lower league stalwarts like Nicky Law. Come on Town - surprise me, in a good way, and come home with all three.

Although get there early as it fills up pretty quickly on match days.

I think Exeter fans will be confident of a win, especially with them noting that Yates is out. I think it could be a big bluff because we've been scoring across the midfield as well as upfront. No doubt Yates will be missed but I have a feeling that we'll come away with a win - thanks in part to some complacency. Come on Town, a win to take us top, and not on GD.

I'd expect them to win by the odd goal, but could quite easily be the other way round. We're better than the last few seasons, but not yet fully formed. 1-1 it is.

Always look forward to playing Exeter after living in Plymouth for 7/8 years and going to quite a few of their games. Hope the new terrace allows for a decent atmosphere!

Hope for a 2-1 win, Doyle and Anderson to score.

Another win, either 0-1 or 1-3

I cannot make my mind up still as I was going to post this last night. After some cheese on toast and a cup of tea this morning, I still can’t. However, the cheese on one piece looked like it said Doyle to score second half 25 yarder 😁

Apparently we’ve sold 960 p, standing, which is virtually the capacity of their new away stand. There could be 350 more, seated, in another stand.

I’m surprised there is any POTD.

Like a lot of other people hoping for the win to keep us up there.  Realistically a point would be good.   Sounds like only seating tickets left, the way it's going could be a sell out for away fans -  wouldn't be the first time we've sneaked in with home fans at St James Park.

Pre match head full of dreams in George's Meeting House.
Anyone looking to munch on a pasty, don't forget, oval shaped and top crimp only.
None of that Cornish rubbish.

Always a good day out here.
The rough sleepers juxtapose nicely with the cathedral.

Phil Brown sides have been rolled over with ease on the last couple of visits.
Hopefully we can give them more of a game today.
Certainly have enough up front to cause a few problems.
Will be interesting to see how Doyle plays.
Sounds like an all rounder from the descriptions.
LMC will need to blot out the background noise today.
A good away turnout can only benefit the team.
Today. It could be sweet.

Have to be a Devon pasty then,  can't beat  a good old Ivor  Dewdney pasty, expecially the peppered steak ones.  Keep an eye out for them 110% recommended.

I live down here and know a lot of City fans, they all say the same. Seems to be a lot more direct/long than it ever was under Tisdale. Most will be happy with an outside crack at the play-offs.

I guess that is the problem with a simple game such as football, while it provides a great sport for us to watch, it can attract simple minds.  The singing about the IRA, years after the Good Friday Agreement used to befuddle me at games.

Parking this game aside, looking at the up coming fixtures i’m really optimistic that we could go on an impressive unbeaten run you know. Tuesday H to Northampton 1 point from last two and H to Mac today. Next Sat A to Nam hoo doo is there to be broken. Then H to Eric, then A to Leyton O, then H to Mac, then H to Volchester with a point to prove, then A to Cambridge which could be a toughie. Nothing coming up that worries me at all TBH.

ECFC a bit tardy with opening up the away end.
Had to put up with the car crash that is Football Phil giving it large then clogging up the terrace turnstile with a ticket for the seated section.

Pretty even 1st half, but we've definitely had the better chances.

And will continue to do so. Wellens will look at that half and know where they can be exploited.

We have been the better side first half but you can see why Exeter are unbeaten.  We need to put one of these chances away and play for the full 96 mins because they are obviously capable of nicking this based on first half viewing.

Very much enjoying my first league game of the season. Starting 11 overall looks so much better than last year. Just got to put these chances away. Liking Isgrove, Lyden and Fryers.

We will take this. What I really love about Wellens since he's been here is our 'bouncebackability'. We very often can turn it around when we don't take the lead. I found myself not too worried if we go a goal down. Two goals of course would be a concern but the side seems to have enough in it to always turn it back in favour. The flip side? Today kinda feels like a loss, should've been 0-3 at HT and but for a post and a dodgy disallowed goal Doyle would've had a hattrick today! Great confidence booster for him and he must be looking forward to the next match. Great signing on paper and starts as a good signing on the pitch.

Never really felt so positive about a season. It might just be our year. Bring on the Numb Boys!

Over the entire 90 mins we probably edged it.  Created all the good stuff in the first 55 mins but then we sort of played ourselves out of the game for 25 mins.  Not sure what else Doyle is supposed to do when a keep punts a ball at him from about 5 yards away?

Doyle worked hard and gets into some good positions.  A little less mobile than Yates, be interesting to see f both play together when Yates comes back.

Thought we didn't use Woolery as well as we could have today but Isgrove is a real find.  He's constantly buzzing around and is great on the ball, plus he goes direct once he has it.

Doughty was it that forgot to track the player on the edge of the box for the pass before their goal?  He does that too often for me to be part of a midfield two away from home, but then he looks so silky on the ball.

Overall think we are looking pretty tidy as a team and Exeter are a tough team to beat so you take the draw away from home.  There are little flashes with us of the sort of play that is above this league.  the trick is converting that to goals and not letting ourselves have 20-30 minute spells like we did today where we looked to have got frustrated with what was working, because it hadn't brought the goal.

Totally agree with all of that Rob. I highlight this bit because you're right, we do look like a side playing like we should be a league above. It is this 20/30min spell that would keep us from staying in L1/getting promoted from L2. We are still developing as a side though and things do look pretty good. Doyle is a great addition.

Just back, (not Swindon) disappointed!  Should have had them at least 3-0 at halftime, stonewall pen from where I sat, hit the post and one kicked off the line. They were  hardly in the game, started the second half in the same fashion but conceded a soft goal, leaving a man unmarked in the box.  Not sure why the goal was disallowed, could only have been a handball.  But the team showed battling qualities to equalise.  Our passing was poor at times but a point is a point!

He does seem to know what he is doing. Everything seems to be done for a reason... almost as though he has a plan.

I was a bit frustrated today when Exeter were starting to get on top and changes were not made, but looking at the bench, that's probably a hit hard on Wellens. When Yates comes back, and assuming we will have no injuries/suspensions, somebody will need to be benched. That would give Wellens something to use should we need to change something. Plus we should have some more coming in.

You may be getting a bit carried away... there are some good signs atm but no more than that. Tuesday will tell us a lot.

You don't need to go back too far to find us top of Div 4 after 3 games, on GD from Exeter, having drawn 1-1 with them, with the equaliser being scored by a debutant (17/18) also beating Carlisle.   We then had what looked on paper 2 decent home games against poor looking sides... Crawley were bottom, Barnet went down and we got stuffed in both. This told us we were likely a bit short and so it proved.  However 3 of the 4 propmoted teams Cov, Luton and Accy also were in the top 7, so their start indicated something good for them.

Cobblers have made a poor start, and look ripe for the taking just the sort of thing we've struggled with of late.... getting something at Whaddon Road mind, will probably guarantee auto.

Very true, but to be fair the league has to be priority and cup games are ok for run outs and youngsters,  think RW may have learned a lesson from the Yates suspension.   Anyway,  do we need to get involved in long cup runs, money would be a bonus but as said, league has to take priority,   so for  me  P3 W2 D1 L0.   !!!.

Not too optimistic then Reg ??,  talk about piss on my parade.

so for  me  P3 W2 D1 L0.   !!!.

Likewise. To reinforce that after 46 games where ever we finish the cup games will not matter, points make prizes nes pa.

I reckon people are entitled to get carried away a bit - there’s been very few times lately. That start you mentioned saw us get a footballing lesson from Exeter at the CG so I don’t think many saw that as a portent of a successful season.

Bit of the opposite yesterday. We outplayed them for almost all the game - some of our stuff was a class above. It’s watching that, now replicated over our 3 league games, that’s getting people excited.

Some good indicators... but that's all.  However that should be enjoyed..  going back to 17/18, looking at the Crawley game, you saw us top them bottom and think we know what happens here, but Accy played on the Friday night and took top spot which I regarded as a good sign... made fuck all difference we still lost 3-0.

Cobblers will come and no doubt sit in and try and spoil the game, if we can find a way round that and win, it would be a very good sign.

It's great to be excited and I am as pleased as anyone with the current start to the season.  However, I assume that most of us on this forum are adults and should know from experience that you shouldn't read too much into a handful of games.

Every team is going to try and make it difficult,  that's the name of the game,  but opposed to 17/18 I think we have  a much better manager and a much stronger squad,  as you say, time will tell but I'm more confident than I have been for many seasons.

The difficulty thing becomes more of a problem as a season develops if you look a strong side.... McMahon's 95/96 side had it  at the CG, loads of draws and some pretty dire games, offset by very strong away form.. It's dealing with that which sets a side apart, find a way. Tuesday is an early tester of this

Really enjoyed the game yesterday, thought we should have been 3 up in the first half. Played them off the park at times, second half started the same.

Game changed when then took Ajose off and put another midfielder on, we didn't get to terms with it. For whatever reason we went more direct and couldn't string passes together like we had for the previous 60 odd minutes. Final five minutes we started to play again and get the deserved goal.

No poor performances although Fryers does get beat a bit easy down the flanks at times.

Thought Exeter were poor for the most part, definitely compared to when we have played them the last two seasons.

Overall it was a good atmosphere, good performance and a decent point.

I think the two seasons are chalk and cheese.  17/18's start was oft referenced against a backdrop of turgid entertainment.  Not sure anyone was getting too excited back then.  It feels different this season, namely the games have been enjoyable as well as getting good results.

Crawley and Barnet followed, as you reference, and in both games Flitcroft made huge tactical blunders, but for large portions of those two games we played the same way we had in the first three.

Another entertaining game yesterday, long may it continue. I don't know whether I'm now accustomed to Div 4 footy but it's pretty good innit. Lyden is a player, a real joy to watch him break up play and spray it around with relative ease and a world apart from the dross of the past few seasons in that position. What worries me is we're only ever a couple of injuries away from being shite again.

Regarding formation, I think we're better with Doughty in the attacking midfielder role, he's wasted further back but would mean dropping Anderson who's been decent so far so not sure, good to have options I suppose. I'm still worried Fryer isn't good enough, his defending is suspect.

I think the two seasons are chalk and cheese.

No 2 seasons are the same but results can be compared to give some context... in this case a start of 2 wins and a draw, was good enough to be top in Div 4, but rapidly unravelled on the back of a couple of terrible home games, and we never quite recovered.  I'd say a minimum of 4 points from the next 2 would indicate this season might have a bit more substance. Can we do it  :hmmm:

Fair play power for pushing the Doyle deal through. Wonder when we'll score in the first half (in the league). Early goal could do wonders for our counter attacking play

It would. Bring the opposition out of any containment tactics especially at SN1 and leave them open to outer developing attacking prowess.

hope not. Doughty has been a revelation playing deeper with Lyden. As our most intelligent player it also allows him to get forward into some great spaces

some people just need to step back and enjoy whats CURRENTLY happening. to stop looking for patterns of why our good start could stop and just enjoy the good start. almost every other team in our league would swap our position for theirs. As an example- you can't say that no two seasons are the same then keep looking back at previous seasons for similarities.

Some decent teams in this division go on really long unbeaten runs. im always jealous of those and i want us to get into this habit of not losing. half our issue with atmosphere at the cg is the scars of the fans from years gone by. never getting too excited in case of failure. concede a goal and think here we go again. i believe wellens is changing the mindset. negativity breeds negativity. fucking enjoy it. we are top of the league!

When I read this I thought I’d written it !!!! Totally as I saw it 👍

Whilst clearly everything should be taken in context there is no reason to dampen the enthusiasm that has been created by Wellens and the team. We may well be top of the league at Christmas and end up 16th at the end of the season but that is no reason to not enjoy the moment. If it encourages the momentum for noise and numbers of support and in turn performance absolutely carry on enjoying it !

Of course, we should be enjoying  a decent start for what it is.... a decent start which may indicate something better.

It's axiomatic that all seasons are different, but there are always similarities, for example it was debated how unusual it is to win the first 2, more so the first 3... only done twice in my time, that in an even league like Div 4 it is difficult is shown by no team this season has done it.

If you look back at Div 4 seasons over the years of the 21st century you'll find 18 seasons where the team winning the league won between 23 and 29 games, somewhere in there is the benchmark for us to aim at... last season Lincoln did it with 23, half the games won.

The exception to the general rule was Sturrock's Plymuff who won 31.

Winning 1 in 2 seems easy enough, but obviously isn't.

PS I don't think there is any correlation between fan's reaction and results.... it's all down to the players, gaffers, wankers in black

I think Anderson will be on the bench when Yates returns.  They could be a deadly duo, Woolery to provide the pace from just behind them.

Listened to the Exeter manager on BBC Radio Devon this morning, he claimed that they should have finished us off when they were on top!  15 mins in the second half was all I could recall them being better than us.  He did admit that they didn't deserve to win.

You only look at swindon for indicators. there are full leagues of other teams. previous history really does mean nothing to how this season will turn out regardless of how many indicators positive or negative. without checking I'm sure Lincoln for example had a good start. literally any indicator can be used to twist any discussion from one side to the other. must stop repeating this actually as it's been said too many times before, just gets tiring after every result butand it's your indicators then make you enjoy football so crack on with it

FWIW I dont mind your historical references in general it's just when they are used to promote negative predictions. I always look at the positive side even when it's hard to find- I have to believe corners can be turned, but you verge on the negative balance too much for my liking. maybe it's the lack of successful seasons over the last 5 of whenever we were last good, that has highlighted this. you might be totally different in a promotion season. I hope to find out! end of the day we are all town fans and I shouldn't keep calling you out

The ground and the fact they've just rebuilt 2 stands probably highlight the limits of their ambition. The location is ridiculously constrained and the Grandstand and away end are probably built to their maximum size so will never be anything more than a league 1/2 ground, if they had loftier ambitions I'm sure they'd have looked at a move.

Reminds me a little of The Manor with the collection of little stands, behind the left hand goal seemed to be two identical stands?
