Title: Yeovil v Swindon official match day thread
Post by: 4D on Saturday, September 22, 2018, 00:25:36
I'll give it another go  :)

The Glovers (whatever that means) are doing pretty well this season but they haven't met us yet.

3-1

How come Macdonald is doing all the pre game comments? Is it looking ominous for The Tanned One?

Com8ng back from Spain today and I don’t I will be welcomed home with 3 points - or 1.

I can’t believe the shiteness of last week will be shrugged off easily. 2-0.

Railway engineering works have put paid to me attending this one.
Those on the terrace will face rain all afternoon but will be rewarded with another close 2-1 win

My local game but I am not quite well enough to attend so will have to watch it on iFollow :(

I really want to get one over on these, my brother in law, sister in law and 3 close mates are all season ticket holders at Yeovil so I will be getting a barrage of crap if we get beat by them.

They are on a great run of form, they have won 4 of their last 5 league games drawing the other.

They are currently on a run of six matches in all competitions without conceding a goal, with five of those coming in League Two games (a club record) with the club going 514 minutes without conceding a goal in a League game, if they keep a clean sheet vs Town for 7 mins then they will have set a new club record.

The player to watch is Sessi D'Almeida the Benin international defensive midfielder who has been attracting scouts from the Championship clubs.

The referee is Matthew Donohue (Manchester).

Its his first year referee, promoted to the Football League in the summer. He's been promoted three times in three seasons, starting in National League North during 2016-17 and then the National League in 2017-18, ending up now in the professional game.

He's been in charge of five League Two matches and a Football League Trophy game dishing out 24 yellow cards and one red card in the process, he averages three cards per game.

His assistants are by Ben Cobb (Dorset) and Ronald Ganfield (Somerset). The Fourth Official will be Savvas Yianni (Somerset).

They currently sit 5th in the table (us 14th) having beaten 2nd place (at the time) Newport away 6-0 last week, although you can blame the Newport keeper for 4 or 5 of the goals, thats still some feat.

Away at Yeovil our form is P10 W6 D3 L1 F16 A6.

Yeovil haven't beaten us there since 2009 a run of 5 for us undefeated there since then.

Despite their good run they are averaging well below 2,800 home fans per fixture.

I would be happy with a draw today in front of 3,456 fans with 755 from Swindon.

2-1 defeat with Anderson scoring.

One of my local games as well.  Sadly, I anticipate that Yeovil will win 1 - 0.

Oh and if you are coming bring a coat, its peeing down in Yeovil right now.

Darren Way on the game in the local paper.

Quote
What about Swindon? Up until the Bury game they were on a decent run under Phil Brown.

DW: They've been on a great run. When you look back at some of their previous scores, there's been a lot of high scoring games - goals scored, goals conceded. So believe it or not, I expect the same on Saturday. Phil (Brown) won't come here and not throw players forward. He'll be quite ruthless with the way he wants his team to play. A lot of forward balls, a lot of forward runs getting into our penalty box. They're quite strong on set plays, so I'm expecting a fast-flowing entertaining game, and a game certainly for the supporters to look forward to. Hopefully we'll get a good crowd. It's good when you're playing a local derby, because I'll call it a local derby. Swindon should bring a real good following and with the momentum that we've got and all our supporters going to Newport, everyone is talking about good things at the moment. To see Gabby Rogers at 17 years of age make his League debut, we're trying to improve the club in every area.

As for our game, another loss and probably a red card.

Pre match keeping it in the family in The Airfield Tavern.
Not a favourite away day this, even though we have done ok here in recent times.
Even Colchester is better and they provide buses to help evacuate fans after the game.
That would be difficult here as its a gridlocked cul de sac after a game.

Not feeling confident today, plus the added prospect of being like a pack of drowned, miserable and disgruntled rats at the final whistle.

Then again we could be happy bunnies, singing and dancing in the rain.
What a glorious feeling that would be.

Won't happen though.
Passing the Cheltenham team coach on the way is a bad omen.

I hope you'll get a chance for some tap with your brolly later. Or if you can't do Gene Kelly, maybe a bit of Rihanna style.....do you know anyone called Ella?

No umbrella unfortunately. Just a waterproof jacket that I appear to have grown out of.

Good old Rihanna, newly appointed ambassador for Barbados.
A bright lass by all accounts.
I'm sure she'd sort out the Brexit impasse pretty sharpish if given the chance.

I remember an opening day away game at Northampton.
Pretty sure it was our return to L1 under Sturrock.

Anyway I walk into the away end (oddly I have zero recollection of who I went with) and the first person I bump into is a slightly (!!!) intoxicated Whits, who with a beer in hand, above his head is singing ‘under my pint of Stella, ella, ella’

I think there's no right or wrong. Put Vigs back in and what message does it send to players that want to impress for a spot? Either way one of them will be left out despite deserving a place.

It's a nice problem to have.

And Dunne was doing well in whatever game it was he was playing in before he decided to get himself sent off. He's in midfield today so he should be fine, albeit a liability.

That would be my team, Dunne is better than Iandolo, but I wonder what's wrong with Smith and McCourt  we perhaps  don't know about

Title: Re: Yeovil v Swindon official match day thread
Post by: BambooToTheFuture on Saturday, September 22, 2018, 13:05:12
Oh. Maybe not. Lancs & Dunne in the squad!

I assume a four man defence with Woolf at RB. This will be like playing with a 3-3-2 Today. Good to see Toumani which may protect the defence slightly but "Rashman" Dunne & "Sicknote" Lancs?

If Richards doesn't play well today he can't warrant a starting birth surely? I bet we end up taking Lancs off and going to a 3-5-2/3-4-3.

Ooh Town I love you, but sometimes I wonder if you love me back.

Very negative, I know but I sense another 2-1 loss. :/

Title: Re: Yeovil v Swindon official match day thread

I agree, Dunne in midfield is not a major issue, well not as much as at right back. In both games he got sent off in the away game at Crawley and the last game of last season home to Accrington he was playing well in before his hot head got to him. As Normy says even as a liability he is better than Iandolo, we will still miss Doughty though and I would have dropped Richards TBH.

Its hard to drop LMC because he hasn't done anything wrong since coming in and made some great saves but Vigs should be no. 1.

I would have played Bayo up front on his own with Anderson in the hole and played Smith and crowded midfield as Yeovil themselves did at Newport last week playing 5 accross the middle.

Post by: Peter Venkman on Saturday, September 22, 2018, 13:17:23
Going to be a really tough game, Yeovil don't let many in at all, only 3 goals in the league all season (in their 1st 2 games) and they are the 3rd highest scorers with 15 (we have scored  13 and conceded 14).

Only Mansfield and Bury have scored against them in the league and no L2 side has scored this season at Huish Park "yet".

Considering he has hardly let a goal in their keeper looks shakey with crosses and his kicking too.

Richards and Crazy Legs do seem to playing a little closer. That's good. Would still bring Beyo in to the box outright though and have Richards as 2nd Striker. Anderson looks hungry. Defence largely seems to be doing ok. Toums playing steadily (which is what we will get). Dunne has me on bloody tenterhooks every time he slides in. Even worse in this rain. Come on Jimmy don't be a dick and stay on your feet!

Town are passing the ball well on the deck but the long passing isn't quite hitting their spot yet, Richards still not winning much at all again.

Hearing reports that a member of the crowd at Barnsley v Burton has been taken ill, with an Air Ambulance at the ground and the game subsequently being called off. Best wishes to whoever it is and thoughts to their family.

As always, football should be a side issue and something to vent about/enjoy/elate to as a lifelong hobby. I think you'll all agree there are much bigger things than football.

Poor shot by Yeovil that nearly goes out for a throw in, should have done a lot better, that could have been bad.

Solid Swindon performance so far, some great passing and running with the ball. Yeovil look quite poor but with our defence always likely to hit us on the break.

Richards and taylor weak links for me so far, the ret have played well, even Dunne has not been THAT bad.

Much better today.

Alzate and Anderson having good games.  Diagarouga solid and fair play to him, Dunne much more effective.  Woolfenden looks more than comfortable at right back as well.

Worries - Richards looks pointless in this team.  I'm not sure if he's had his day or just has no way of using his abilities in this set-up.

Lancashire - not done badly, but something is clearly wrong with him.  He turns like someone who has a rick in their neck, so stiff.  Hopefully Conroy comes back soon, and Knoyle returning in a couple of games should take this worry away.

Taylor - he's done.  There is nowhere for him left to hide in the team and the set pieces have been poor.

Keep going like we have so far and we can win this.

Title: Re: Yeovil v Swindon official match day thread
Post by: Peter Venkman on Saturday, September 22, 2018, 14:58:06
Anderson having his best game of the season for me so far.

I agree about Richards and Taylor, neither are good enough now unfortunately.

As you say Lancashire is not playing badly but hes not fit and when Knoyle comes back we will look more solid at the back IMO.

We need a striker to play alongside Bayo, I have been saying that since pre season, we need a goalscorer despite what Reg argued with me about, with a poacher in the team I feel we would be winning now.

Yeovil are really poor considering their run of results and position in the table but are not a toothless threat, defensively they looks ill at ease with each other and we always look like causing them problems, Yeovil dive at every opportunity so go careful in our box.

Toums, Anderson and Alzate all look comfortable on the ball and we break with speed which Yeovil can't cope with.

The game is there to be won just stop Taylor crossing from the fucking half way line with not one of the crosses getting past the 1st defender between him and the goal.

Three cracking goals today. 59, 79, 89. Can't ask for more than that....Ohh but you can...a clean sheet too! Is that 3 out of 4 for LMc now?

Haha, Taylor was bloody awful, the entire game bar 5 seconds, and what a 5 seconds!

Great result, good performance.  I like the final front three - I know people want Adebayo down the middle but he likes the cutting int from the flank move and has more chance in the air coming in from the wing as well.

Dunne did ok, harried a lot.  Still incompetent at basic passing at times, but he added rather than took away today.

Alzate is a classy payer in my eyes.  Diagouraga had his best game, the kind of game we had hoped from him I think.  Lets the others play around him but still good on the ball.

Nelson is improving and will probably have to be saved from himself at some point, with potential injuries.  Nutcase.

Woolfenden did well at fullback, just as he had shown at Morecambe.  Highlights some poor selections last weekend by Brown.

Overall, we threatened more than they did all game.  Well deserved, and how on earth Yeovil managed to bag six in a game is beyond me, even allowing for rank bad defending and goalkeeping.  They looked lacking in incision and competent in defence, not much more than that.

9 games in, last week looking like a fuck up rather than the norm.

Excellent result. Excellent performance.

Yeovil looked poor at times, but I'm inclined to think that's because we made them look poor.
I think it was us getting at them all game that they looked so poor, great result.

Awful weather conditions but at times we passed the ball like a team 2 divisions higher at times against them, best performance of the season so far by a fair way, there could be a decent side in there yet!

He was my MoM today. Closely followed by Nelson for his bravery and Woolf did really well too, with Alzate the pick of the midfielders just about beating Anderson.

He does remind me of a daddy long legs, his legs go in all directions which makes his next move so hard to read for a defender marking him.

Oh I have and still awaiting a reply!

Bayo bundled one of their players to the ground near the touchline after about 80 mins, they fell over each other and there was nothing in it, the player who was tangled was their winger who was falling over under every challenge all game, nothing malicious at all in it.

'Macca (Neil MacDonald) is as keen and ambitious, as what I am. He's been at the highest level, he wants to get back up there, same as myself. It's one of them, where you just piece the jigsaw together slowly but surely...'

Hmm, PB has stuck around at most of of his jobs but I do wonder if he's already starting to formulate his (and NM) exit strategy.

Possibly reading too much into it? That aside. Cracking win.

These are the points I could hear, although the interview was muffled.

PB-

All credit to the players mentality this week.

Great comeback after last week against a side on the back of 6 clean sheets in a row who had scored 6 last week.

On way traffic for the first 35 mins, all Swindon.

Disappointed by the referees.

Great defending for the full 90 mins by the whole team.

He didn't think it was a penalty, neither did Keshi, moaning about the refs trying to make the game exciting when its not their job.

Alzate is a real talent, Toums brought assuredness to the team allowing Alzate to bloom.

Bayo is a quick athletic sprinter playing wide so he can move and interchange.

Woolf wanted to play centre back but excelled at right back.

Nelson hadn't heard of Beckenbaur coming off the pitch when PB said he was similar to him in the World Cup with strapping on his arm, fans will love nelson, plays with his heart on his sleeve.

Good day at the office.

I did reply at the time with
He was 4 foot from the tackle but got the man...again.

He did that twice in the middle of the park, went sliding in with studs up but luckily never caught the opponent hard, some refs would have booked him for intent as he was nowhere near the ball on either occassion.

I wouldn't say you were reading to much into it, it's a given that any manager/coach is going to want to ply their trade at the highest possible level so it's a natural and understandable thing to say.

The only way that's going to happen though is for PB and NM to do an outstanding job at STFC which means success on the field for the team. As we all know, the lot of the lower league fan is that your manager / team doing well means they ultimately bugger off. It's the price you pay.

Having said that, they've done nothing yet so they are going nowhere. Although a month of poor results* will mean that for a lot of people, they won't be able to get out of town quickly enough.

*I obviously hope that doesn't happen and don't think it will. Hopefully things will continue to build, we get promoted, finish in the top half of L1 and they move on with our best wishes. Everyone's happy  8)

I would fully agree but the fact Brown has stuck around at most of his jobs. Only really Derby was the outlier but it was his first attempt at management proper, so I excuse that and Preston was one season split over two and never really got going. Whereas Hull & Southend he stayed for 4 and 5 years respectively. It's testament that in modern football Brown is only managing his 5th club, in 14 years. I'd love to see him stay and take us to the Championship. He has the nous and building blocks to do that. Only time will tell.

Faith restored!

Credit to the management and players for sorting it out after last Saturday.
Also going from missing Doughty badly to not missing him at all yesterday.

Noticed that Conroy travelled with the squad.
The fitness guy had him doing circuits around half the pitch at half time.
Looked as if he was going to throw up at one stage.
Maybe no need to rush him back with Sid & Wolf playing well and Lancashire did ok yesterday.

Well worth a soaking anyway.
A relatively rare occurrence these days.
I think it's just Macclesfield also having an open terrace.
The other three grounds with open away sections, that I can think of, are all in L1?
All good fun, but miss the days of a good drenching on the Stratton Bank.

As Yeovil don't have a forum here are the comments from their FB page, don't wish to disappoint Wobbly Bob ;)

Queue the usual poor spelling and swindle comments ... yawns.

Quote
I think Swindon came to us to put the boot in, they were 3-1 whenever we got the ball, three themselves to the floor at the slightest touches and the ref bought it, we didn't deal with it and use it to our advantage. However we were poor, couldn't string two passes together and were slow to move the ball around

Thought Swindon took there 3 goals very well&could of been more if not for Baxter.

Bevis was awful, turning circle of an oil tanker and the delivery of a striking postman!!

Bevis was crap yea, but so were the rest of them, no leadership whatsoever, Swindon had done their homework closed down fast we never had any time on the ball. Fela’s pen, let’s not go there, if his head gets any bigger it will explode.

I tbink it is quite easy for oppositjon to work out how to play against us. Swindon defended deep so no space behind back four for our quick players to run into.

After the Lord Mayors show a dose of reality!

I thought it was a very fair score line, they were on top from start to finish, we just weren’t on it today

the Ref didnt help. He missed so much including a clear handball in thd build up to the 3rd goal.
Ofellas should have had a 2nd chance at the penalty as 2 Swindon players almost tackled him as he took his shot.
Overall we were poor and didnt deserve a point.
Swindle lived up to their name.

And from Darren Way post game....

Quote
Yeovil Town manager Darren Way felt that Swindon Town's determination to stop the club's defensive record was greater than his own side's, on a day in which they finished second best in a 0-3 defeat. The Glovers boss made reference to a pre-match interview by Robins midfielder Toumani Diagouraga where he had referenced Yeovil's run of minutes without conceding a goal, and the challenge to try to end that run of League Two games without conceding a goal.

That five-and-a-half game shut-out was finally broken in the 59th minute of this afternoon's match at Huish Park, leaving 573 minutes between their last goal the Glovers conceded, as Steven Alzate netted from range. That was quickly followed by strikes from Matthew Taylor and Elijah Adebayo to give the Wiltshire side a 0-3 victory. Way told BBC Somerset after the match he felt the opposition were faster to first and second balls, and admitted his side were not good enough on the day:

"We're really disappointed. We knew Swindon were going to come and try to make sure that they stopped our record. That was first and foremost, and they were more determined and they got to first and second balls, and I felt they played better than us. We didn't get our game going at all. I said to the players in there now, that we need to hold our hands up, and out of respect look each other in the eye, and say that wasn't good enough. It's probably the first time that I've had it with this group. I'll be really interested now in looking at the response, because on Tuesday (against Milton Keynes) it gives us the opportunity and that inspiration to go fourth if we get that win."

Way added that he was unhappy with Alzate's goal not being closed down, whilst he implied that for Taylor's goal that the communication between those in the defensive wall and the goalkeeper wasn't there. But he also hinted at a bit of complacency having crept in since last weekend's 6-0 victory over Newport County, saying that he had warned his team of that possibility:

"The most amazing thing is that all I've been talking to the players about this week is complacency and what it means. I didn't feel there was much in the game. The strike (for the first goal) was from distance, and I think he (Steven Alzate) was very lucky to find that flying in the back of the net. We've normally blocked and tackled in that area. Then the free kick for me was pretty obvious really when Matthew Taylor steps up. So I was disappointed with that. You get the penalty and you've got a chance of getting back into the game, and I suppose that summed our day up really. But the players have been on a great run, and I can't be too critical of the group. But it's making sure they understand that's not us and that's not acceptable."

And a question and answer with DW after the game.

Quote
Yeovil Town manager Darren Way spoke to local journalist Chris Spittles, in an interview for BBC Somerset, after his side had lost 0-3 against Swindon Town on Saturday 22nd September 2018.

CS: Darren, a disappointing afternoon.

DW: Yes, we're really disappointed. We knew Swindon were going to come and try to make sure that they stopped our record. That was first and foremost, and the energy that they got from that, they were more determined and they got to first and second balls, and I felt they played better than us. We didn't get our game going at all. I said to the players in there now, that we need to hold our hands up, and out of respect look each other in the eye, and say that wasn't good enough. It's probably the first time that I've had it with this group. I'll be really interested now in looking at the response, because on Tuesday it gives us the opportunity and that inspiration to go fourth if we get that win.

CS: It's the first time that it's happened. Is there anything that you can put it down to, in particular?

DW: The most amazing thing is that all I've been talking to the players about this week is complacency and what it means. But it's making sure they understand that's not us and that's not acceptable.

CS: You were disappointed with the free kick - was that with the wall, the goalkeeer, or both?

DW: I just think that with Taylor in that position, it was pretty obvious where it was going to go. But for him to get it in, in the way that he did, I'm just as disappointed with that as probably Newport were disappointed with their goals. When you keep it at 1-0 in a local derby, you've got a chance of getting back in it. That's because I still felt that there wasn't really a lot in the game and there never is in a local derby. But for it to be 3-0, I didn't feel it was a true reflection. But it was our mistakes.

CS: At 2-0 you had the penalty. Now you've had a bit of an issue with penalty takers. Of course Alex Fisher had the one saved and he wasn't on the pitch. Olomola the designated taker, but unfortunately he couldn't find the back of the net either.

DW: It's important that he keeps his head up. I think he's very disappointed in the dressing room. But players miss penalties and what I don't want, is I don't want it to become a habit. We've done great in the Checkatrade, and since everyone has been saying who is going to be the next penalty taker. They've been working on it all week in training. For him to practice, and then not get it right on the day is unfortunate. So I can't say he's not been practicing. Unfortunately he missed that one but I'm sure he will bounce back.

CS: No Gary Warren today. You haven't conceded a goal with Gary Warren on the pitch. He's missing today and you concede three. How much of a miss was he?

DW: Well he's a big miss, and quite clearly I don't want to put it all down to Gary Warren. I feel that it's a team thing when you defend, which is why I've not singled any defender out or goalkeeper out, because I think the whole team has done its job. Today he (Steven Alzate) gets a shot off from 45 yards and it flies in the back of the net, and that's not us. We have to take responsibility as a team. I don't want to put too much emphasis, because Gary was not playing, because I thought Enes Mahmutovic did well. We've just got to make sure that we regroup, and as I've said we've got to go for fourth now on Tuesday.

I really do wish the term 'Swindle' was born from referees missing decisions to our advantage and the occasional feisty challenge.

I don't remember anyone using the term "swindle" to insult us before about 10 years ago, not sure if it came from the Macari era or more recently? it was never a term Oxford or Bristol fans used pre internet forum days.

Many years ago just post the Macari era, my old boss was Wolves fan and he called us Swindle. Unsure, but if memory serves me right I thought it was due to ticket pricing. We were at home to Wolves and the price of travelling fan admission went through the roof as wolves always sold full allocation. The price was considerably more than what we paid for a ticket and much more than who we previously played at home the week before. So it was no difference to what premiership sides do now with game banding.
Like I said I could be totally wrong and it would not be the first time.

Interesting, I worked at the club throughout the Macari era (plus Ardiles, Hoddle, Gorman, McMahon and Quinn) and I don't remember there being any uproar about away ticket pricing at all, we were on a par with all other clubs in charging for away fans.

I do remember stewarding the town End that was full of Wolves fans back in the early 90s when away fans were moved there for several games while the ground was developed, that was the only time they ever sold out their allocation at the CG IIRC.

Interesting theory though.

It's always amusing to read these things, to see how delusional fans are.  Given that Stags have had 1 Div 3 season in the last 25 years and a fairly lengthy spell in the Conference, including being locked out of Field Mill.... you'd think they'd know getting up to Div 3 isn't easy. If they win their game in hand, they'll be a point shy of us.... not great but in the mix.

I think they might be basing their current expectations off of spending some serious cash for this league and being 4th when Flitcroft rocked into Town and told them the players they had weren't up to it and he needed to overhaul the squad.  On that basis they have a point.  You yourself told us they would be up there, a team showing more ambition than us.  If you took it in isolation, losing only once, a game behind everyone else, then asking for a change of manager seems nuts.  But they have endured 20 games under him, we know what that feels like, and he's doing worse with them in that period than he did with us!  I can't imagine having to put up with that.

The first time I heard it was from Wolves fans.  It was an early home again the season after the promotion/demotion season (ie 1990-91).  1-0 to Town and Fitzroy Simpson (who played as a striker that day) scored.  The Wolves fans were situated in the Town End and sang "Swindle Town" and "Naughty Boys" - presumably in reference to the reason we didn't get promoted.

I had no idea my brain had retained such useless trivia until I read your post.

Flitcroft is no friend of mine... I've never met the bloke. In my judgement he's a jobbing lower league gaffer, an assessment I've made on the basis of the job he did for us last season. That was an OK job in the circumstances, up until he jumped ship, the reason for which we may never know.  He may or may not do OK for Mansfield, and other than them being a direct competitor, like say Yeovil's gaffer, that's as far as my interest goes.

It is of course too early to tell.

Now according to some Flitcroft was a complete disaster of a gaffer, yet we were a point better off last year after 9 games, than this. Does that mean that Brown is even more of a disaster?  Of course not,  as .it's too early to tell.

Div 4 is a grind, coming up we've a very difficult looking game v Oldham.... a dour grind of a draw would be acceptable.

The difference being, we had witnessed having our arse handed to us by both Barnet and Crawley and got a footballing lesson by Exeter- harbinger of things to come re Barnet and Crawley. Most fan’s opinions of Flitcroft was honed by watching one appalling home performance after another. The fact our away form was rather good wasn’t enough for most.

Not all Swindon fans... there will always be others who see it differently to you.  It's a football cliche that in management, the only certainty is that sooner or later you'll get the sack.  Many try to be a boss and some fail sooner than others.... and never really recover. Take someone like Kevin Nolan, had a little taste at Orient in their worst time of basket casery, then picked up Notts where by general consensus, seemed to be doing a fair job.... as a young gaffer not long out of playing, looked to have some potential... within about 5 or 6 games of this season... gone. Will he come back?

The jobbing lower league gaffer is the sort who can rack up at least around 250 games at usually a few clubs... on his CV might be the odd promotion or a great escape, or perhaps with someone like a Jim Bentley keeping a a club up against the odds. Perhaps being associated with developing a player might help.

A classic Div 4 operator is John Sheridan... now at Carlisle, and they're doing OK.  Sheridan has 569 games in all comps under his belt... Oldham like him for a bit when needing to stay up and then sack him... a bit like Martin Allen at Barnet.

Brown has 520 games in all comps... Flitcroft 268, but has a good few years left in him.

Cooper, interestingly, if you take his non league stints into account has 471 games....

For sure the home form was poor, but that had been the case for the 2 previous seasons, and sometimes it can be difficult to turn these things around.... Flitcroft had done that in the new year with 5 wins on the spin up until he bailed.

So far this season, the home form hasn't been convincing either.... now whether these things are just coincidence, or there is some other factor at work, I don't know.  Occasionally there are mutterings about the players findng it difficult at the CG.... the relentless negativity about certain players and staff, the lack of a vocal end, can create a very unpleasant atmosphere.  Certainly the players seem to find it a bit easier away, where the travelling fans tend to be a bit more positive

Anyone know what the story is with that Town flag with what looks like a Sporting Lisbon badge on it? (or Sporting Clube de Portugal to use their correct name).

Edit: Just spotted that it says 'British Lions' on it (not the rugby kind, a reference to the Club emblem). I suppose they must be Portuguese ex-pats who support Sporting and moved over here. OK, so I've probably answered my own question - interesting link though, fair play to them.

Or - could it have something to do with when we played them in a pre-season game in the early 90's? A bit too long ago I would have thought...

The player Macari hit would be Steve Foley. Previous game was a cup tie at Fratton Park where Foley wasnt happy about being subbed. I had a video of that game and the fight got a mention on the commentary.

Interesting stat :-

We won more games against top division sides that season (6) than we managed in a whole season of top division games in 93/94!

Part of the reason Stigger was subbed was because he was still under the influence of alcohol that day, as he was on several occasions for Town, great player who if he stayed sober was the best player on the pitch.

He turned up for one game when I worked at the club barely able to walk as he stumbled out of his car after a lot of bevvies, he was told to go home by Macari and I had to order him a taxi to get home because he wanted to drive while still heavily inebriated and myself and other officials at the club wouldn't allow it.

Such a waste of great talent.

There used to be a picture of him behind the bar in the Swiss Chalet (is it still there? Someone will probably tell me it was knocked down 20 years ago) two blokes were holding him up one under each arm (think one of them was the landlord at the time) and judging by the photo his state can only be described as pissed as a cunt.

I remember the time my mate was looking to buy a second-hand car and he had seen an advert in the adver for a Cavalier about 3 years old. we went to have a look the bloke comes to the door and I go to my mate (not a Town can) oh my god oh my god it's Steve Foley!!! We went in and had a chat (is Doberman tried to hump my mate's leg) and we took the car out for a test drive (I have a vague memory of the rear view mirror falling off) he was giving it the predictable Scouse Schpeel..."fookin' great caa did ladz...Kingy down at da ground's desparate to buy it off us..." He didn't buy it and I seem to remember some time afterwards reading in the adver that Stigger had (allegedly) tried to sell a car that didn't belong to him in fact it may have belonged to the club. my memory is not too clear on that one though so  far be it from me to cast aspersions on his good character...

Very much the modern day. We're probably one of the least cringeworthy sides in League Two from what I've seen. For what it's worth I enjoy the videos of the players after a game.

It's a bit much for my taste, but it's still not that bad although they do occasionally go overboard. There's plenty that would be lapping it up and I doubt they're trying to cater specifically to grumpy middle-aged men.

As mentioned already, you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't.

Yeovil and Franchise drew 1-1 tonight.... fwiw a good outcome for us, Yeovil go above us but only on GD and keeps the execrable turd that is Franchise below us.

An interesting point re: MK is the number of late goals they're conceding.

Inside the last month, in the league:
94th minute here
80th minute vs FGR
94th minute vs Lincoln
88th minute vs Yeovil

And in cups:
91st minute vs Bournemouth
87th minute vs Peterborough
93rd minute vs Peterborough

On the back of the league goals, what would have been 10 points has been cut to 3.

Here they failed to make any substitutions, which, as discussed at the time, is pretty odd for a team 1-0 up. Last night they only made 1 - and conceded another key late goal.

Tisdale is obviously a bit of an oddball. He had a big influence at Exeter, and rightly so. He therefore might have got away with these things. But I can see patience running thin at MK pretty quickly.

Conceding late goals more often than not is a sign of being unfit IMO.

Agreed. That's got to be all the more reason to make some substitutions though.

So the manager could be criticised on 2 counts there.

And the opposite is also true, under Macari we scored a lot of goals late in games and we had the fittest side in the division.

From the MK Dongs forum....the natives aren't very happy.

Not a chance we'll go up like this. I cannot see us playing a worse team all season.

Absolutely no excuses. I don't care if we've only lost 1 game blah blah blah - this is league fucking two, we should be walking this with this squad. Honestly, it's like the team just don't learn or improve. This is fucking Yeovil we're talking about.

Yeovil today were one of the worst teams we've ever played, let alone this season.

It can't get much worse than Yeovil. They were absolutely atrocious, it was like a training game for us.

Sod off back to Exeter, obviously your the reason we're so shit, can't take chances, can't hold a lead against another poor side, rediclous, beyond a joke!!

Absolutely, fully, 100% still support Tisdale. He was a good appointment and is doing an acceptable job.

Mmmmmm, redicious!

I think we’re a rather tolerant lot when it comes to managers. The only one I’ve ever vocally abused was McMahon. Obviously others were shit but I just couldn’t bring myself to hound poor old Luke who was a decent bloke dropped right in it by Abbott and Costello.

Danny Wilson's 09/10 side conceded late, meaning after 87 mins 6 times in 09/10, 5 of them being 89 or 90. Each time a winning position was spurned to end in a draw.  We finished 4 points off an auto slot.  V Sarfend we conceded 2 in he last 5, v Charlton added on time when they had 9 men.

Used to do my head in.... was it fitness  :hmmm: or as Ferret suggests use of subs. My feeling was it was the coach being conservative, rather than thinking we can see it out, perhaps better to go a bit gung ho, and play up the other end of the park looking for more goals

There are few more frustrating things for fans than a team which ships late goals.

I remember it being an issue under Wilson. Looking back, I suppose we had a really good team but not much of a squad. The subs just weren’t in the same category as the 11. Macklin for Charlie, or Hutchinson for Paynter, aren’t the sort of changes that were ever likely to be made for more than a few minutes here and there.

Leicester away 1980-something. Down to 10 men and 2-1 up with about 5 mins to go. Still haunts me to this day!

Of course, so far this season we've been the other way round. We've conceded our fair share, many of them over the first quarter of games.

But the only goal of any relevance which we've conceded after the 56th minute was the penalty at Crawley, where we'd been playing with 9 men for about 40 minutes.

And, of course, we've already scored a fair few (very) late ones. Adebayo has scored or assisted many of them (won a penalty vs Macclesfield, scored vs MK, scored at Yeovil), and he's clearly an athletic guy who will be particularly useful late in games.

Had high hopes for Lloyd Macklin. Scored loads for the youth team.
Made a few appearances in 09/10 but picked up an injury.
Remember the lime green boots in the "you've got be good to wear those" days.

Played for a few years in non league and now looks to have packed it in at the end of last season, still in his twenties.

Never really recovered form the abuse sent his way from the Arkell's on debut.  Came on v Orient (08/09) at 0-1, about on hour in, and proceded to give a very nervy display of running into dead ends.  We needed points at the time as with a handful of games left we were very much in the relegation mix. At the time I thought even by the completely illogical standards of some of our fans this was OTT and uncalled for.

Not just Macklin, we keep doing it to young players trying to establish themselves. On the one hand there's the adulation directed at NT, but then some people seem to expect young players to step out of the academy as fully fledged pros. That's why we don't get to say "He's one of our own" very often.

It's true, we always have an extreme view of them. We could carry on listing them both ways. Storey was at one end of the popularity scale, Pook at the other. Whereas they really both belonged in the middle somewhere.

My view of Smith was based on him looking considerably better than what we had at the time from what I saw of him. Connor Thomas etc!! Pook was rightly at the bottom end of the popularity scale, he was fucking shit. Storey showed a lot of initial promise but faded somewhat.

Before a change in shifts I used to get to quite a few youth/reserve games.

Macklin is easily the second best player I saw for us at that level in that time period. Only one who was better was Lukas Jutkiewicz and he definitely benefitted from being a tank from about 14.

Probably Nathan Thompson after that. Scott Doe always looked handy but never got a chance with us.

Lapham & Stroud never stand outs at youth level but both had MotM performances in the first team. Although they went as quickly as they arrived.

If Wiki is to be believed in 49 games for us and Torquay before he dropped into non league he scored 1 goal.....

Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm positive Chelsea were sniffing around Macklin around the time he was scoring for fun for the reserves/youth?? Sure he scored 20+ goals from right wing one season??

I couldn’t tell you one way or the other but heard rumours they looked at him and Thompson.
Wouldn’t really recognise any scouts by face
Saw Roberto Martinez at a reserve game when he was manager of Swansea and certain Charlie Austin was playing his bit of football in a Town shirt. As he was only a few rows behind I did hear talking to which ever member of his coaching staff he was with that ‘that kid has it’ or words to that effect.

Few years later. Fuck load of scouts to watch Henshall.
Where the fuck is he now?

At Darlo in the National League North, at the grand old age of 24 looks to have played 9 games at a reasonable level out of a grand total of 42 overall, with 2 goals.

Is he the one who was a bit of an arse about Thompson (L)?
