Title: Swindon Town v Doncaster Rovers Official Matchday Thread
Post by: AldbourneRed on Tuesday, March 1, 2016, 08:55:10
Reckon we can push on tonight and continue our run of good form.

2-1, Ajose to continue racking them up with a couple for us and the inevitable goal from Williams for them, probably from yet another penalty

Doncaster have a good record against us at the CG. Willo will score, no doubt.

It'll be nice to get points before a trip to in-form Oldham.

Yikes. I've got Smeeton Syndrome.

I'm more inclined to think that the best result would be a win, but whatever floats your boat.

Easy win as Doncaster are turd. They couldn't even beat us when we had the kit man playing. Set us up nicely for near the bottom Oldham to worry about an in form Swindon coming to them.

http://www.doncasterfreepress.co.uk/sport/doncaster-rovers/rovers-news/doncaster-rovers-should-know-how-to-hurt-swindon-1-7760887

Doncaster should apparently know how to hurt us. Coming away undefeated from the CG like they usually do will probably do the trick. Long overdue only our 3rd ever win over Doncaster at home. No memory whatsoever of Shakes and Comyn Platt inspired victory in 2006 but I do remember even in the Lou Macari 3rd Division promotion winning season of 1986-87 absolutely battering them but still not managing a win against them.

Post by: Tails on Tuesday, March 1, 2016, 14:30:24
I remember that game, Cureton assisted Comyn Platts goal with a sort of back heel volley pass thing. That was the same week he scored that absolute belter against Walsall.

Seeing as how we haven't managed a clean sheet yet at the CG, it would hardly be a surprise if we fail again. Nevertheless, going through an entire season without an opponents 0 in the results column has never been achieved. We even managed 2 in the Prem season when conceding 100 goals, so statistically it is very likely we will keep a clean sheet before season's end.

It will probably be v someone like Millwall or Wigan...something silly and unlikely, similar to keeping one at Priestfield where Gills were the highest home goalscorers at the time  :)

After the last two wins I am relaxed that we will get 55 points soon and all go on holiday.

My mates a Gills fan, we were saying how we've both copied each others seasons from last year.

Good result tonight. We are hitting form at good time, although I think it's far too late to make anything of this season it could at least bode well for next season.

Strange game, easily on top in the first half but the dirty northern bastards came at us hard in the second and we struggled to get into their half, great breakaway from Obika and a cool finish.  We just didn't seem to concentrate in the second half, gave the ball away too easily or tried the glory ball which failed to come off.  Twice lost the ball from our throw-in!!  Chaplow rightly sent off, fouling from the first minute!!  And please don't get me started on these short corners, lost the ball on so many occasions.  Everybody put a shift in tonight, a win is a win and another three points safely in the bag!

Be fare please. This game had all the thrills and spills of a nil nil draw. A turgid game split by two goals executed by the good old kick and rush break aways and not the pissing pointless passing game we love. (to hate)

Piece of piss. Donny are shit at the moment. Couldn't cope with our pacey breaks. Offered fuck all themselves. Once they realised the ref was weak they tried to disruopt it with persistent niggley fouls.

This worked for a while but came unstuck and thereafter it was nothing more than comfortable. 1-0 though never enough, well usually, so Beaks second, power pace and calmness made it game over.

Vintage Town, no. Professional and clinical town - yes. And a clean sheet.

Its his dreamy eyes.

Ok, he looked good going forward in the first half. Picked some good intelligent passes, used the ball well and even nearly scored after a drive into the box (or was that Doughtey).

Anyway, started to fade a bit in the second half, and replaced at the right time.

oh and Robert was shit tonight !

Impressed with him. Looked assured and creative. Also got stuck in and won some headers. He was taken off after 60 mins for Robert and the midfield looked worse for it.

I love Obeasta. Outstanding every time I've seen him this season. Stays composed, works for 90 minutes every game and defenders just bounce off him. Started the move for the first goal tonight by showing great strength and bringing the ball out from a corner we were defending.

The great thing is Ajose is completely the opposite type of player, defences just can't cope with the pair of them. Most teams have one stand out striker, this season we have 2.

Don't think we're complete enough to end up in the play offs but if we somehow squeak in we've a good a chance as ever with our strike force.

Well deserved win v Donny finally. They look very poor but at 2 nil up we got a bit slack and complacent. Chaplow had his sending off coming from virtually the first minute. Obika man of match by a country mile though Landolo very impressive for an hour and Nathan Thompson has made real difference after his return.

Nice screenshot Dave. After the jitters of the first third of our season I'm beginning to get a little nervous and, dare I say, excited. Oh, by the way, despite the poor picture quality, have you always looked like Rowan Atkinson and do you have any more pics of the missus ? I like a neat fringe.

The fact that they're still in the play off places after that string of results proves what a shit league it is.

Good performance tonight.  At times we played some really good football.  Nice to keep a clean sheet.

I'm surprised more hasn't been said about the ref - absolutely useless, although the corner he gave to Doncaster after the ball blatantly came off one of their players ended up leading to our first goal. There should have been several bookings for Doncaster before Doughty waa booked.

4 points off the play offs.  FFS!!

Special mentions to Iandolo and Traore, they look to be real finds. Traore reminds me of that Kante at Leicester, only 23 as well so plenty of time to keep developing.

When you look at the squad now we are probably a 3rd front line striker and maybe one centre back away from a pretty balanced squad. Spoilt for choice again in centre mid with Doughty, Traore, Louis, Robert and now seemingly Iandolo as well. (Plus of course Kasim and Rodgers). Amazing how things have turned around in the last couple of months....

Oh and 2-0 to us, taking Mr Ajose up to 21 goals in the league.

Doh. Wrong striker. I knew it was one of Obijose, Ajosebika or something  :)

It's too late at night but there must be anagram potential from obikaajose

I really enjoyed that tonight. Great entertainment. Ref was a serious unrelenting masturbator but thanks for giving the corner the wrong way and the resulting goal for us. Cunt

Beaker's celebration in front of the Town End was ace

Pretty disappointed that we didn't go one down and then go on to win  :wotjump:

It'll be interesting to see what Power does next - hopefully dip into the market and get a striker in. One injury to Obika or Ajose and we could lose any momentum.

Just watched the highlights,  some lovely counter attacking football,  always way more exciting to watch than all that possession based stuff.

Also just watched the Oldham highlights,  they love a long ball,  have a very flappy keeper and their pitch is an absolute disgrace.  Will mean we might have to change our style up a bit,  let's see what Williams does next because his ability to adapt the team to suit the opposition/conditions seems to be working a treat so far.

How would you now assess this season's comments to the effect that our team / squad is barely of Conference South standard, and that we were set to be all but relegated by Christmas time?

I know it'll go down as a Doughty assist for the first but really, another assist for Barry. How many is that now?

Also - what in god's name is their keeper doing for the second.

Avoid defeat at Oldham then it's Millwall, Coventry and Wigan - the only tough spell in our run in. Come through that with 6/7 points and I might just afford myself a glance upwards....

Never say this again.

It's no Ajika I'll give you that.

Woken up in a fine mood. We're getting better all the time while every team above us bar Wigan, Burton and Millwall are seriously starting to crack. Anything is possible!

Win or even draw at Oldham and it's game on heading into  Millwall, Cov and Wigan. Not used to seeing boring mid table finishes at Swindon which is probably why I'm expecting some sort of dramatic end to this season. The quality is dire this year.

We could actually end up finishing the season strongly for a change as opposed to recent campaigns where we've tailed off at critical points such as last Easter or conceding our automatic promotion spot under Wilson (or have I imagined that?)

We did. The loss to Millwall in the last few games was the nail in the coffin which led to them beating us in the PO final.

Out injured for the foreseeable future and completely uninterested this year when he has played. The Midfield has looked much better of late than at any time with him in it this season.

How would you now assess this season's comments to the effect that our team / squad is barely of Conference South standard, and that we were set to be all but relegated by Christmas time?

If you made them, then a bit wide of the mark.

If you're implying I made them, then you're mistaken. Think you'll find early on that I said the alarm bells were ringing for a relegation scrap, after a 1/3 of the season gone and 13 points from 16 games we were well and truly in that scrap. Think you'll find I also said that such was the hole we'd dug, that it would need PO form to dig ourselves out....happily we've managed that.

As for the squad, obviously the plan for the season, was to get something out of the 2 Liverpool lads, that Stewart has been given a long term contract at the Scousers, and Williams was called into the Wales squad bound for the Euros suggests they must have something about them.

Unfortunately, as Cooper acknowedged at the time, this meant we were having to bring in the likes of BOO, Barry, Brophy, Balmy etc a bit too early and for too many games, and it showed in the results, with a historically bad sequence of home defeats, which cost Cooper his job. That the likes of Ojamma and Bangoura were off loaded pretty sharpish suggests te management didn't see much in them either.

Think you'll find I also predicted that Lingy wouldn't last past January, and that Power might take a more hands on role, with Willams and Embleton in a day to day holding capacity, with a review at season's end.

Can't get them all right, but I believe the management duo are only in place until the summer. Williams rightly stated on taking over his aim was to keep us up, so he has just about done that, now we enter into somewhat different territory. As I said in the earlier post it's been an interesting season so far and promises to continue in that way.

I was thoroughly impressed with the performance last night, LW seemed to alter the style so we were more direct and broke with pace. I enjoy watching it compared to the usually tippy tappy stuff.

JSW - I thought he was excellent, composed on the ball and snuffed out a couple of dangerous attacks. The defence looks much more stable with him instead of Branco.

N.Thompson - Same as above, solid and good on the ball.

Obika - Class, he deserved his goals for all of his unselfish work over the past month or so.

Iandolo - Very impressive, composed on the ball and had a trick or two up his sleeve. Early days but we could have a player on our hands, the chipped through ball to Ajose was class.

Our recent form and style of play reminded me of the Cooper team in the first few months of his tenure, it's been much more enjoyable to watch.  LW & the players deserve a lot of credit for their recent good form.

Great post, can't disagree with any of it. Especially about Beaks. I said before the game it's about time he started scoring cos he deserves it, and because Ajose keeps drawing attention to himself ;) (too late on that one, I know.)

Interesting people said NT playing through his injury would be to our detriment. I know it was at Wembley, but he was great last night. The man's made of steel.

Me to, plenty of shouts of away and get it forward.

It's amazing what a bit of confidence and a few wins will do but it only takes  couple of missed passes and a goal given away to bring back the boos.
