Title: Stevenage v Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Shaw Rosso on Tuesday, January 14, 2014, 00:00:02
The Opponent:  Stevenage

I don’t think I will get away with mentioning Stevenage forms a perfect heart shape when viewed from above again. My first ever victorious starting of a matchday thread started what seems a long time back away to Stevenage. Confidence was low, it was more a case of keeping the score down, and we spanked them 4-0. I know its not very fair, but even now when I hear football and Stevenage together in the same sentence I still think of them being a small club, punching well above their weight, stuffed away in the outbacks of Hertfordshire.

It seems the focus over the last few hours has been on a somewhat bemusing stance taken by Lee Power with regards to the inclusion of Nile Ranger in the team to face Peterborough being reported on by Adver Sam. I can appreciate Power’s sentiment here, totally, but if this is his reaction (even though Ranger scored and we won) to something like this then it would be worryingly interesting to see his reaction to something one may consider a little more disruptive than Sam’s tweet. Would an email to Adver Towers not have been sufficient? Either way, I would imagine Sam will be in attendance this evening and I always thought The Adver siphoned off most of its interviews from the audio done for BBC Wilts? Let’s hope it blows over soon as a local media v local football club statement slinging contest never looks particularly attractive, whatever perspective you take on it, especially with it not being conducted on a Friday.

Where the opposition gather –

http://www.borochat.co.uk/forum.jsp?article=264973

If you ever need some good bedtime reading (to help you doze off), then the above site comes with my approval. Yawn.

Last 6 – LDDLLL (Currently rock bottom although they did pick up a surprising cup victory on their travels to Doncaster recently).

They have served us both –  Albert Jarrett, Miguel Comminges, Jamie Slabber, Steve Berry, Andy Ford, Paul Peterson, Ben Worrall, Jimmy Gilligan, Martin Williams, Charlie Griffin, Oliver Risser, Tony Thorpe, Kevin Dearden

The Odds -  Stevenage  12/5  Draw 5/2   Swindon  5/4  After a bit of searching this was about the best price I could find for either team. We have played Stevenage 3 times in the League and won all 3.

The Son Says –  Apparently Peterborough was the most exciting game he has been to for quite a while now, I don’t think the on-pitch action was what he was referring to though, more the kick up the arse that Luongo took from the Peterborough goal keeping coach and the handbags that followed. 2-0 away win.

The Prediction – Being one of wanker Westley’s teams then its hard to know what to expect, half of the squad have probably been transfer listed by text over the last 14 days so moral is likely to be low. 3-1 away victory, goals from Ranger, Pritchard and N’Guessan, 3’710 in attendance, 399 from SN1.

And Finally –  Stevenage became the first football club to win a competitive final at the new Wembley Stadium back in 2007.

Another 2-1 to us, more comfortable than Saturday but always with a bit of "OOooh, not quite sure" because we always look likely to ship a soft one against the run of play

0-0 if negative Cooper, 1-2 win if positive (Ranger, Pritchard)

Not a great deal
Kasim blazed over the bar - A block on a Ranger effort then he headed follow up straight at keeper.
They seem to be getting some reward down Halls flank but nothing too threatening yet

Goal disallowed for Stevenage after a series of corners
They have some big units up front

Zoko turned Hall with ease and Hall bundled him over - not the last man so not a red but Hall running out of places on the pitch he can try

Barthram could play at LB

Same, he's slow and doesn't even have the redeeming feature of most slow centre backs in either being able to read the game well or be dominant in the air.  For a player of his size it's embarrassing how little in the air he wins when challenged by another player. Branco probably had a better game Saturday than Hall's ever had!

Cooper:
- Frustrating side to us
- 2 games we perform at decent level then come away, make bad decisions and concede sloppy goals
- Maybe thats the way it has to be this year as players learn
- Grant Hall bad mistake for second
- 1st half had 3 good chances but poor finishes
- 2nd half could have been there all night and wouldnt have scored
- Tried to change things but was disappointed
- We didnt turn up tonight
- Doesnt know whether Grant Hall has future at LB
- No news on injuries
- Nothing going on with new players
- Away form is about mentality
- Young players still learning about playing senior football. Places like this you have to play ugly.
- Want to stick to attacking instincts, fans made it clear they want that too
- Striving to get as high as they can. Doesnt think anyone really expected us to be play off candidates, but we will try to get as close as possible

I don't get to many games nowadays, this is only the third this season, I enjoyed the game at Brentford, although we didn't win, and the game at Colchester where we won. so that's the context.

However, I can't remember witnessing such an appalling load of rubbish in all my years watching the Town (I'm sure there have been worse performances, but I can't remember one).

No skill, no desire, no fight no clue.

And we were playing the team at the bottom of the table, so I think we have the right to expect the team to compete.

I watched it with Flash, and I don't think his report will be as complimentary as mine

If they hadn't been on Rangers Crack Pipe on the way up on the Coach. They most definitely had by the start of the second half. Terrible performance all round. Really not sure about making the trek down to Gillingham now as most will be that showed up and watched that shambles tonight. The Corner where no one realised Pritchard was off the pitch and no one else was making there way to take it was comical.

just got back to the hotel...will read back through.

highlight was sharing a few jokes to Nice bloke really.......that was it....

we looked out of sorts and out of thoughts.

piss poor passing and no shape or movement.

every player was pish, Pritchard got my vote for mom but even he gave the ball away for the first goal and fumbled a gilt edged chance thar Ranger set up on a plate.

it was shit....look forward to seeing what Cooper has to say about that.

Stevenage are poor and will be down there come the end....hopefully we have enough in the tank.

Roll on Chav central but im not confident after that.

Just back and that was fucking shit. At times it was Macclesfield bad.

1st goal - wtf was Wes doing giving it to Pritchard 20 yards from our own goal? Shit touch from Pritchard and its a goal.
2nd goal - I don't even know what happened, it was our fucking throw in and somehow 15 seconds later we concede a pen.

No fucking desire, passion, energy or ambition tonight.

Wes - distribution was pretty shit all game, takes SOO much time on goal kicks even when we were 2-0 down. URGENCY
Hall - Not a left back. Got done so many times I cant believe he stayed at LB all game.
Branco - my MOM tonight (not saying much). Made a few good tackles, composed on ball and made a few runs forward towards the end. My question, why on earth has it only been the last two games this lad has played?
Ward - distribution awful as per although options forward were poor.
Thompson - What the fuck has happened to him? he was shite tonight and has been for a while.
All of them couldn't cope with the directness of Stevenage and the long/high balls.

Pritchard - Corners were fucking atrocious. few good turns and move but no end product.
Mason - Doesn't look like he gives a shit which pisses me right off as I think he could be quality if he tried - shirks too many 50 - 50s.
Kasim - played ok, few good tackles and runs forward
Loungo - so many loose passes and no urgency whatsoever
N'Guessan - Was he even playing? did fuck all the time he was on. If we play him, play him up top not out wide.
Everything was so fucking slow and pedestrian it was painful! Stevenage cut through them at ease despite us playing with one more bloody player in midfield!! Also, if Ranger is going to hold the ball up or head it on, someone has to go beyond the striker and gamble as he needs support!!

Ranger - didn't win a single header the entire game, looked disinterested second half. I would say that the balls up to him were pretty shite all game and he had no service either.

Positives - Barker looked half decent when he came on, few good runs and confident on ball
Storey looked threatening although he refused to shoot a couple of times when he could have done imo, lacking in confidence?

Sorry for the essay but fucking hell that was shite and fair play to the other 327 who bothered, shame the team didn't.  :smugfu:

Leicester square was good so all is healed. Still a shite game though, we knew we had a young team at the start of the season but the inconsistency is unbelievable from shit to decent. Cooper must have seen hall struggling all match as he said he doesn't have a future in that position. Why didn't he change it then! He couldn't even take a throwing to our players but I doubt he is used it it. I haven't been o many away but iv been to a few and we haven't a hope in hell of making the playoffs unless we start to perform anywhere like we do at home.

Budget will be cut back even more next season as has been stated by Power, so can assume it will be more difficult next year than this. Honestly that's my frustration with this season, we've got some very good players this season, better players than we've had in this division before in a few positions. I think we should be doing better than we are.

Will it be more difficult though? If we look at the teams in the drop/promotion zones atm, we've got Orient, Brentford, and for argument's sake Wolves going up from L1 and Yeovil, Doncaster and Barnsley coming down. Personally I'd trade Barnsley for Wolves any day, I'm struggling to remember us not beating Yeovil, and we shouldn't be too morbidly terrified of Doncaster.

I do think the L1 table next season will be much more favourable to us.

BUT. That doesn't mean we should give up on the play offs, I for one will be dead chuffed if we get into them. Agree that I'd rather have the JPT on the shelf this year though, would be nice to beat our Wembley duck before we have to go there for a league-related game.

We'll lose Pritchard, Mason, Hall and if we're honest, Ranger too. If we can then hold the rest of it together and buy intelligently then we won't be much worse off than we are now. We'll probably need a replacement for Jay Mac and maybe even Wes? Even with the summer cuts I don't think we'll be in too bad a position.
Fuck all that noise for now though, we're still in touching distance of the play offs and face a Peterborough side who are all over the shop in the JPT, still potential for this season yet.

Totally agree. I'm sure Yeovil offered Williams a deal to make him the highest paid player in the clubs history on 5k a week before he signed for us so I would imagine he will be on that here. Pretty sure I read that Benson was on 3k a week & Troy and Navarro will probably be on similar!! Cox will probably be on less again & I thought Rooney had already agreed a mutual termination of his contract!

We get the change of scenery every so often by getting relegated to Div 4...and then coming straight back up, but that means a decent season....atm we're about in our historical rightful place, it would require a seismic shift off the pitch, for us to take a significant step forward...and that's not going to happen under Lee Power.

I think we know that anyway....if you believe in the possession game, and you carry it out properly, then in theory it should deliver results, it's just that often we're not good enough to carry it out. Should we change...not in my opinion, I'd rather see us trying to play progressive football and failing, than taking the Westley model..

I think it's fair to say we won't make the play-offs by winning all our home games and losing every away game, although it should ensure a top 10 finish which is very respectable.

With a good run of results pretty much any side in the division can still make the play offs even Stevenage and Shitty.....unlikely as it may seem, its silly to write us off so early in the season when everything is still very much to play for.

if any side wins the next 4 or 5 games they will be well in the mix, with our Jekyll and Hyde team that we have it only takes a few lucky/good results to breed and instill confidence again.

Totally agree JJ, but we definitely need to start picking up points on the road.  Unfortunately there seems to have been a fair number of performances away from home that have been exceptionally poor it's hard to see that completely turning on its head.

3 points on Saturday would be a start!

Branco got done for the second didn't he! Can't really tell if Hall was hopelessly out of position for legitimate reasons (like we lost the ball while he was joining the attack).

Yep. It will be impossible to make up those 4 whole points, we had might as well just give up now.  ::)

My opinion isn't based just on last night....but blades...Walsall and Coventry and Pboro where we got two wins which should of been draws.   Just don't think we will do it in the league.

Hope I'm wrong..

We are doing far far better than I thought we would pre season.
