Title: How geeky are you?

I find it therapeutic to watch my hard drives being defragmented.

Beat that!

I have bought a cheap weather station. Its currently lashed to a drain pipe with gaffer tape and cable ties. Its never going to be accurate because there is no place in our garden for it without the house or trees or something.

But the extra geeky bit is this:

www.batch.me.uk

Loving that Batch, whereabouts in North Swindon are you? And how much was the station?

Ł40 from http://www.clasohlson.com/uk/Weather-Station/Pr363242000 (it's a fine instruments WH1080) and the software was free from http://sandaysoft.com/products/cumulus , didn't even install the bundled software. My website is the bog standard default web output from cumulus.

I'm guessing its not going to be too accurate being as the good ones cost Ł1000s, but as I have nowhere to site it unless I borrow a big ladder and strap it to the roof of the house its not got much of a chance anyway.

PS. You fail the geek test by not working out my location from the  co-ordinates. (Woodhall Park area).

Cheers for the info Batch.

Yeah I'm no geek, but the weather station plus website is quality.

I love using batch files and macros to do even the most mundane of tasks that would only take 10 seconds to do manually, just because I can.

Not very I don't think.  I'm less geeky and more boring.  I do like reading, but spend most of my time doing the family man stuff - and I love it.  Quite like a beer too.  In fact, I might go and get one now...

Having said I don't think I'm very geeky - I do make a point of reading Lord of the Rings once every two years.  It is the best book ever written though, so its not really geeky - just good sense.

I built my own web server using an old Pentium 4 desktop which resides in my lounge. It runs on Linux and has Apache, PHP, MySQL, Ruby on Rails and most other crap apart from a control panel, so I had to learn everything through terminal.

I also (this is similar to what Samdy does) love building Automator Apps on my Mac and I use them to batch process folders of photos, as well as other Apps for watermarking, rotating, flipping and then others for uploading to specific folders on servers.

I also constantly buy Apps to enable quicker workflows on my Mac, for instance I can find a file, attach it to an email and send the email, from any point in my computer with about 5 keystrokes.

I like gadgets - amongst which I have a Garmin running watch and a Garmin bike computer.

The watch links to my heart rate monitor and after a run I religously upload to the garmin connect website and mapmyrun.com - here I also log my mileage to my trainers so I know how far I have done and when they need replacing.

The bike computer is similar to the watch but also links to my cadence sensor (pedalling speed) and HRM. Also uploaded to garmin & MMR. I've almost clocked up 2000 miles on my road bike and hence have given the drive train an overhaul.

The garmin rubber bands for the bike mount also doubles as a surprisingly good cock ring.

Right - I've decided I'm an amateur geek.  I like reading, especially about history.  I actually quite enjoy mathematics, as I love the way it is so obligingly logical.  I really, really like quizzes - especially when the subject is sport, music or history.  I own every Manic Street Preachers album, single, best of, EP etc.  However, the geekness displayed on here is too modern for me, and well out of my geek league.  I don't even understand what Barry and Samdy are talking about.  I hope I'm not the only one...

I started a football related database in about 2006 and it's comprehensively pointless. It's an Excel spreadsheet with six tabs documenting every...

* Every player I've seen play (From Tier 1 to Tier 5)

- In order of seeing them
- Clubs I've seen them play for
- Amount of times I've seen them play/score/booked/sent off/own goal
- Nationality
- International representation and tournament summary
- Domestic honours
- Career history
- Additional notes

* Every fixture (over three tabs so I can filter more accurately)

- Date
- Level (I count tier 1 - tier 5, Friendlies + Benefit matches etc...)
- Attendance
- Referee
- Line ups (Inc. subs not used)
- Additional notes

* Every manager

- Similar tab to the players listing their managerial achievements or lack there of.

* Team overview

- Kind of like a league table based on how many times I've seen them play.

I played Championship Manager 01/02 to the end of the game.

I played Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on a yearly basis.

I have watched all 22 James Bond films back to back to back to back.

The most listened to tracks on both my iPods are wrestling entrance themes.

Last year I listed all my DVDs and watched them in order.

I have 23446 posts on this very forum.

I opened an Excel spreadsheet sometime around 2005-2006 and I've not thought about moving the data to anything else since then as it's for my viewing pleasure and I'm happy with it.

Saying that, I might suffer a relapse and explore the idea of moving it.

does the database pull the international caps and stuff from another source?

If not - how do you keep it up to date, or do you just update that sort of thing when you see them play and thus add to their record?

Title: Re: How geeky are you?
Post by: Costanza on Saturday, July 7, 2012, 13:33:07
I update manually. Player info always changing so I tend to do 'big' updates in the weeks prior to a new season.

RE: Caps - You'll see some in yellow and some in blue. The caps in yellow are players still actively playing international football, the others have either retired, not player or been out of the international set-up for a while.

My geekyness of late doesnt muster to much more than overclocking my already highly overclocked PC to 5.15ghz on watercooling. I don't know why I do it, I do it just because I can and to test the level that my PC will work at even though its not a 24/7 overclock.

To be honest there probably are cables not plugged in to the correct ports. most i either remembered to wrote down but the odd one once id untangled it and was ready to plug it back in, i realised i didn't know where i'd taken it from. :-) So no doubt come Monday there will be a few confused people in the office, but i'm not fussed as im working in a different office monday :-)

Tidying up a few cables as part of your job isn't geeky.

I just cabled up the offices of a charity in my spare time (and without being paid). Had to rip out the old cabling first and install everything from scratch including 48 network wall points, new switches and patch panels and all the cabling and trunking (throughout a 3 storey building). It works and they've now got a nice new gigabit network throughout their building.

Next up is upgrading them from SBS2003 to SBS2011.

interested in building my own NAS. what parts have you used and (because i know naff all about them) can i link them through my router (WNDR3800) to accept both mac & pc connections?

I've got a thread up here (http://thetownend.com/index.php/topic,39987.0.html).

I used a cheap second hand CPU/mobo. It's only 1.4Ghz, but that's plenty for my needs. The bonus is that it runs so cool it doesn't need a fan and the power consumption is tiny. I started with 512mb of RAM, but upgraded to 2gb when one of my RAM sticks decided it no longer wanted to work.

I use a 40gb HDD for the OS (FreeNAS) and 2 x 1tb HDDs for storage.

All housed in an Antec case with a cheapo PSU (again, because the power drain is so small you don't need a powerful PSU).

There's plenty of freeware OS you can use. I stuck with FreeNAS because it's fairly simple to use. From what I've read, unRaid is pretty good if you're wanting to use a massive RAID array but it's not free.

Another thing that my little NAS project added to my geekiness was that I'm now semi-proficient in Linux command line commands.

I've felt no competitive streak during this thread. I've learned that I might need to seek some kind of medical evaluation but no element of competitiveness from me.

:hmmm:
