Title: Swindon Town Vs Crewe - Official Match day Thread
Post by: SuggWillSugg MBE on Friday, August 5, 2011, 23:18:50
Figured that as its after midnight its officially time to start the match day thread for us to all get blindly optimistic and excited!

I think we'll win this 2-1 and I will be attending with my dads season ticket cause he's away..

How many people are going?

1-2

Swindon to start off well and take the lead. Crewe to claw it back in the 2nd half with a late sucker punch.

Feeling positive about tomorrow (as I was at the start of last season).  No real idea how everything will shape up, so I'll plump for a 4-0 win followed by a huge rise in unrealistic expectations.

Let's go to work.

Fancy us to score at home, steady on now?

2-1 for me

It's Matchday proper now! (None of this posting on a Matchday thread then going to bed for me).

The CG will be a fortress this season, not many teams will score here and Crewe won't be one of them.

3-0.

Haven't the faintest idea about the score today, basically because I have no idea how good we are at football.  My 2-2 Prediction League prediction was a complete guess.  Damned excited though.

I'm also thinking that this season's match day thread should be started by the first person who's up & out of bed properly for the day.  So someone with kids, most weeks.

I dreamt 2 scores last night. One we lost 5-0 and the other we won 6-5. Might've been the same game for all I know.

I think this game is going to be an easy victory that is going to push the mongs into new realms of happiness and optimism for the coming season, 5-0 Town.

Crewe don't have one Johnny Foreigner in their senior side. In fact, they don't even have a token Scotsman.

Talk about opposites. Hopefully St. George will take one hell of a beating at the CG today.

Time to join up with the forum after many years of watching as a guest.

I fear we will lose 1-0 today against a Crewe side that can play some good football, we will mostly outplay them but I think a mistake at the back by one of the fullbacks will let them in to a hit and run win at the CG.

8,762 crowd with 124 Creweies there cos their fans don't travel well or very from Gresty Road (sorry the Alexandra Stadium!).

I hope I am wrong but I feel we are still a couple of players away from a side that can challenge for the top, I think a high mid table season could be the order of the day.

Lets hope my head is wrong and my heart wins with a thumping 3-0 win!

COYR!!!!

I will be sat by the pc listening at 3pm. Gutted I can't be there. I'm going for a 1-0 win with 7840 attending. Ritchie the scorer.

I'm also guessing that a lot of these first time posters are Oxford fans waiting for the 21st so they can pollute the forum.

Bit gutted I can't make this... although there's plenty of games to look forward to in the coming weeks so I'll get over it. There's a part of me thinks we could do really well this year, starting with a 2-1 win today. To be honest, as long as we avoid defeat and look fairly competent today I'll be happy enough. It's only the first game.

Out of interest, do the club still do the "you can use someone else's season ticket if they can't make it" initiative?

My family are stuck in the Isle of Wight at the moment so there's a slim chance I may be able to go!

If you try and use a Jr ticket you'll be in trouble.

When we tested ours at the fun day they told us the scanners flash when a kids ticket has been used so the stewards know to check you're a child..

It isn't to be honest.  We are a bit of a shambles and Flint has kept them from scoring on several occasions.  That said, we are starting to improve slightly.  Can't comment on individual performances, because we're still trying to work out who everyone is!

Ritchie got booked

Second half sounded pretty boring up until that point. Crewe had one chance that they apparently should have scored. All went quite for a bit, then Town had a couple of attacks and then scored.

Doesn't sound anything like the first half where we werent in the game for large periods.

- Didnt lose confidence
- We should/need to be better
- Risser 'felt the game too much' in front of fans 'too shy' (ie nervous in first half)
- Backed Risser despit him not playing well today
- Deserved to win
- Hope fans enjoy
- Happy that we won but now others will up their game against us. If they work hard DiCanio will remain confident
- No opinion on penalty as couldnt see.
- Scoring penalty was important as it changed the game
- Risser goal was well controlled in between 2 defenders

Then my connection died!!

Said the players can have a drink tonight......sparkling water, no beer.

Saying that Bodin trained well last week. After the Reading game alot of people were saying he's not ready to play for us and alot of talk of him going out on loan. Also picking him proved the point no one is safe and things can change in a week.

Up to the manager to watch everything in training.

Sounds like we're not signing Raimondi.

Possibly another striker in on trial tomorrow.

- Bodin played well. Justified DiCanio's decision to play him over Connell
- Big change in Bodin in 6 days. Learned lots and impressed DiCanio
- Despite all goals scored in preseason, still need another two players
- Tomorrow another striker joins on trial, plus another player. Uraguyan gone home to think about it. DiCanio may take him later but not going to take him now.
- DiCanio talked about teamwork and the fact that players can change his mind as Bodin did this week.

2nd half we cunted them.

Di canio is a mentalist

Crewe could have been 3 goals to the good at half time. Glad that despite going in a goal ahead it didn't delude the team over their performance and second half was much better.

To get the negatives out of the way first:

- smith looked out of his depth, devera looked very shakey
- we were dreadful for much of the first half, lucky not to be behind.
- Apart from his goal Risser did fuck all. Has missed a large chunk of pre-season though, so i'll give him the benefit of the doubt
- I appear to be sat next to the billy bodin hate squad for this season, which may come to a head at some point this season.

In better news -

- Second half we were amazing. I don't know what was behind it, whether Di Canio gave them a rocket at half time, or it was down to our fitness but it was a completely different performance.
- Aden Flint was a fucking colossas. I cannot overstate how good he was today. Dug devera out of trouble a couple of times.
- Kennedy had a good game, as did Timlin.
- Very impressed by Mcormack when he came on.
- Bodin was impressive, as was de vita. Connell looked alright when he came on too. Only concern was they all looked very similar players, but they did well so can't moan today.
- Di Canio is mental

Keep it up

As I didnt go to the Reading game this was the first time I saw the pitch and it looked very good although there was a lot of water on it. Thought Risser was very average until his sublime finish but that might because he was injured for some of pre season and lacking fitness. Flint had a good solid game and deserved the man of the match he was awarded. Hopefully he will continue to play well and start. Thought Smith's goal kicks were very poor however it looked from where I was sitting he made a few good saves in the first half when Crewe should have scored. Overall im pleased with the performance for the first game of the season and hope to see more of the same!

Top of the league  :D

First 5 were encouraging. And then up to the penalty we were largely shite. Devera, Smith (J) and Risser were woeful, Bodin and DaVito finding it hard to get into the game. Flint, who was a skinny man mountain at the back,  and Smith (P) kept us in it but lets be honest - woeful finishing let us off what should have been being 2-0 down (at least).

Then we started to get into it a little more. And Bodins run tha tlead to the penalty was a good one, though it was hard to see if it was a penalty or not. Well taken by kennedy too.

After the break we mullered them as much as they had done us in the first half. Moreso. But we took our chances and played some neat footy at times. Everybody improved and upped their game, except FLint because he was already having a stormer!

Downside: We can't play like we did in the first half if we are to do something this season. We probably need more attacking force (though Connell looked lively when he came on). This isn't an attack on Bodin. I thought he had a fine game for someone of his and experience.

I also like the fact Bodin forced his way into the starting 11, despite being sceptical. It sends a message to the squad.

I won't go on any more, it was a mixed performance but the signs are encouraging. And the monkey of no home win this year is off the back- Reg will be happy.

I totally agree with Batch, felt Bodin had a fine game with little or no support from De Vita, thought he was something of a weak link in all truth.  Kennedy made a couple of errors but his all round game was very encouraging, I did feel with Ritchie on the right we looked a little unbalanced, would prefer to see him on the left where he seems more comfortable.  All in all, lucky to go in at half time a goal to the good but thoroughly deserved the three points for the second half performance.

The midfield pairing of Risser and Smith didn't work first half at all. They sat too deep and watched the game pass them by. At half time PdC must have told them exactly that and in 2nd half their movement was a lot better.

Great goal from Risser and in the first half he would have never been that far up the pitch to get a strike at goal, not overly convinced in the two but it's early days yet.

It was fantastic to have options on the bench and the subs that came on did superb; Ferry never failed to find a red shirt, McCormack was chasing every ball and Connell looked very lively and for me would start ahead of De Vita who didn't do a lot for me out of the ordinary.

PdC was very animated on the sides as you would expect but talked to the players throughout. Surprised Ferry and Connell weren't knackered when they came on he seemingly had them warming up for the entire game.

Flint was superb and the best performance by one of our central defenders for a long long time.

Just got back, well happy with that!

I must admit I had my head in my hands for the first 30 mins though, midfield = anonymous, attack = weak, Devera = shocking.

I honestly thought that Risser and Devera were joke footballers.... some kind of sick prank being played out in front of 8,000 people.

But as the half wore on we got better, despite what a few have said I thought Jonathan Smith looked busy and was committed/mad in the tackle.

Aden Flint was an absolute beast throughout and deffo deserved man of the match.

The pen deflated Crewe a bit, but we were awesome in the second half, Devera was a different player, Risser really came into it, I thought Bodin worked his socks off and we throughly deserved the win. Strength in depth is pleasing, Connell looked lively, McCormack worked hard, pleasing all round.

Rissers goal was stunning, simply stunning, the technique of the man was superb....

Roll on the Football League Show tonight!

I thought they looked to far forward! Crewe had 2 men up top centrally, then 2 men just behind them. All were in advance of our (central) midfield.

The game was definitely passing them bye either way :)

Flint was superb and the best performance by one of our central defenders for a long long time.

Wasn't it great. Every high ball punted forward you could sit back and watch Flint nod it away. But it wasn't just his heading that was impressive today...

Very happy that Di Canio picked Bodin because he was the best during the week. Also, Bodin is out of the Bristol City game as he's with Wales under-21's so it's also a polite warning to the senior players to keep focus.

hi all,
first post from me,but been lurking for a while,so let the Knighting begin...... ;)
First half i thought we were dogshit, way too nervous, midfield was non-existent,we couldn't string a couple of passes together, ball was being hoofed forward too often...Smith (P) kept us in the game on at least 2 occasions..
second half, we were much improved, seemed to be a lot more control and we started playing the ball on the ground, and using the channels better..
Flint,as others have said was immense, also thought timlin put in a good shift as well..
only negative of the day was the dickhead in the TE slagging everyone off, even when we were 3 up...unbelievable Geoff

Chant of the day "theres only 1 trevor mcdonald" to the steward in the TE... :Ride On Fatbury's Lovestick:

Not much to add to what has already been said. Crewe totally outplayed us in the first half, especially in midfield. The second half we murdered them, but you could see their heads had dropped by then.

I didn't think Ritchie had a great game, at least not by his high standards.

Devera was terrible in the first half and would have cost us 3 goals against a better side, but he did improve.

I didn't think De Vita had a bad game and held the ball up quite well. The trouble was that the midfield was so far away that he had no one to pass it back to!

Flint was literally head and shoulders above the rest.

The subs all played well and I wouldn't mind seeing McCormack and Connell starting against City.

cant really say anything that hasnt already been said but........ Risser was shocking apart from the wondergoal, Smith (J) looked like he chased alot of balls and got stuck in but his passing was woeful.

once ferry and mccormack came on the midfield was alot more controlled. Bodin played well was surprised that he started.

and Devera was pants in the first half flint got him out of trouble atleast 3 times.

Well at the end of the day we got the three points. It is the best start we could have hoped for. It's not as if they will let it go to their heads either. They know they were lucky not to go down 1 or 2 in the first half, so they shouldn't take this win for granted.

Would like to repeat the sentiments uttered in previous pages.

First half generally we were gash. Good opening 10 minutes but then we sat back, let Crewe come at us and they dominated possession, had several goal mouth chances and really should've been one or two up. Credit to Flint and Smith (who I've always doubted until now) for keeping them out. Then, all of a sudden, a good Bodin run against a typical big, slow League Two defender who sloppily gives us a penalty and bam, we take a ver undeserved lead into the second half. HUGE turning point. Didn't expect Kennedy to be the taker but fair play to the lad.

Second half was a completely different story. The goal clearly settled the team, gave us confidence and we were really quite good from thereon in. Controlled, calm and very good on the counter attack. Second goal was an absolute beauty and the third absolutely killed Crewe.

Standout players for me were Flint (well deserved man of the match, won EVERYTHING!), De Vita (very good feet, very good on the ball, very good in the air) and Phil Smith (did his part in keeping us in it). Ritchie was his usual self, we expect him to be good now so.

Over positives were the cheer Ferry got when coming on, McCormack didn't look nearly as shit as Charlton fans made him out to be and Connell looked very lively. Add to that the fact Esajas, a winger with a lot about him, and Kerrouche, a striker I'm very excited about, weren't even on the bench, you can't help but be positive!

Overall, very happy. Roll on Tuesday!

My thoughts exactly.

Note to corner kick takers :

Just put the ball around the penalty spot so Flint can attack it...and then let his head do the rest. It worked for Big Shaun...and it can work for Aden.

He won everything, just like last week against the Plastics. Devara needs to by him a big drink after Flint got him out ot trouble in the first half.

You watched a different game to me fella as I though he did alright overall under the circumstances. As someone said after, there was a lot more pace and a lot less time at this level, but thought the players clearly all respect Risser and he seems to control the team well?

The 30 mins showed us there's a step up in pace, but I think the team could gel well if we survive the first few games unscathed and garner a bit of confidence.

Not convinced at all. He was shit, his positioning was shit, running off the ball was terrible. Timlin had to keep telling him to push up. Passing was rubbish too.

We played so much better when we had Macormack and Ferry in the middle.

Missed all the pre-season games so i was really excited to see the new lads in action today.  After start brightly for a few minutes Crewe took control and we were just completely overrun especially in midfield.  I'd read a lot of stuff on the boards about how well the players looked in pre-season but other that Smith (P) & Flinty none of them stood out for me.
It's fair to say you could have compared us to incontinence pants the 1st half, shit at the back & piss up front.

Then came the penalty not sure if it was one because it ws right down the other end but once we scored we started to come back into the game.

2nd Half we took control and started to take the piss out of Crewe tbh so i'm putting 1st half performance down to nerves.

Overall good team performance but Flinty & Smith (P) were the stand out players.  I loved watching Di Canio he is so animated on the touchline it can be hard to concentrate on the football  :D

Also thought McCormack was good when he came on and loved the way he just shoulder barged the Crewe player off the ball.  Though Connell looked alright too when he came on.

Glad Risser scored hopefully he'll be less nervous next game.  Todays performance was a huge boost for the team but they must not get complacement.

We were very lucky not to concede a few goals in the first half, fair play to Phil Smith, looked like he took a wack when blocking one chance. Flint got in the way of everything in the first half! Deserves his place for now.

What a nice change to see a 3-0 home win, been a while. Good atmosphere at times in the second half.
Perfect start to the season although massive improvement needed before that NEXT home match.

Also liked the new sized programme.

Bad first 40, great last 50. Overall, I love football again and I've got a massive grin on my chops. I'll get on to the individual performances but we've got a team at last who are fit. We've also got a manager who sorted out the obviuos problem that the two centre midfielders were playing far too deep and pushed them up at half time and it worked a treat.
As for the players, Smith looked very confident - I'm not a fan but did nothing wrong today. Caddis was a mixed bag. Kennedy did alright but I though Timlin gave him little or no support. Devera had a shocker of a first half and how the fuck Crewe didn't capitalise is beyond me. he got better after the break and hopefully its debut nerves. As others have said Flint was MOM by a country mile a beast in the air and not too shabby on the deck. Timlin gave the ball away cheaply in the 1st but was good in the 2nd. How the fuck did J Smith not get booked - played the man better than the ball, got stuck in but it wasn't really going for him today. Ritchie was Ok and gets up well for a little guy. Risser - now this is interesting. Scored a peach of a goal and earned a silly yellow but didn't do much else......but he was organising the others and when Kennedy was slotting home the penatly he was over with di Canio taking his instructions. DeVita looked pretty good in parts and works his sicks off. As for Bodin, he ran his slabs off as well. Harried the defender for the penatly and had a bloody good game today. I was surprised he played ahead of Connell but this decision was more thna justified. Connell looked lively when he came on and I'm pretty sure he will make and score plenty this season. Ferry looked Ok but should have done better with the late chance. McCormack i really liked - put his foot through a couple of their players and I thought our midfield looked better with him in it.
We got the bit of luck when we needed it and that steadied us and we got better and better. Nice chant to Phillips in the Crewe goal and over 8k is a bloody good attendance.
I'll enjoy my beer tonight.

The fitness levels were pleasing, I know its easy to look dynamic and ooze energy when you're 3 up but we we're still chasing and closing down right up to the final whistle.

I hope Risser does kick on from here, he showed some good touchs, but overall (goal apart) he was disappointing. He admitted it himself during the post-match interview. I think a lot of players looked nervous, Devera especially.

Special word for one player I've never really rated - Timlin, really good shift today, plenty of graft and good movement all round. He looked like he's lost a few pounds and was really athletic, pleased for him.

I won't shout this out, as I've been pretty harsh on the guy but I'll grudgingly admit that Phil Smith looked very good as well, claimed a few good crosses and stood tall when needed..... oooh it hurts to say this, but I don't think he deserves to be dropped now.... Agggggghhhhh

It's Matchday proper now! (None of this posting on a Matchday thread then going to bed for me).

The CG will be a fortress this season, not many teams will score here and Crewe won't be one of them.

3-0.

I wasn't very confident of this prediction in the first half! Not going to slag any player off: it's a step up for some of them, a big crowd for some (Which must play on your nerves first time) but the main reason is that we won 3-0 and everyone played a part (Whatever degree).

Nice to see the Townend nearly full and louder than at any game last season.

On the BBC site, we had 2 shots on target...and scored 3. Explain.

Hopefully SSN are going to reshow the PdC after match interview when he thanks everyone and dedicates the match win to his father, in a few minutes.

You know the other three leagues don't matter so who gives a fuck whether they get their facts right

How anyone can say a player is shit after seeing them play for 70 minutes in the first game of a season is beyond me.  New club, new country and new players around him.  Give the poor fucker a chance.  He admitted himself that he was unhappy with his own performance.

No player can be labelled as shit after 70 minutes, not even Ben Hutchison, even he had 2 or 3 games.

Quote
Di Canio told the assembled press after the match that a selection of his players had been influenced by the loud Swindon crowd pre-match, and that it took a while to adapt to the conditions.

It maybe me but that comment worries me about 21st August

A game of two halves.  First half we were poor and some of our passing was atrocious.  Had it not been for Flint and Smith and some more clinical Crewe finishing, we could have gone in at half time a couple of goals down.  As it was, we stepped up a gear in the last 5 mins and got the penalty.

The second half was a completely different affair and after Rissers goal we completely dominated.  Flint deservedly MOM and great to see him score, he was superb throughout.

It may only have been one game, but to me, the players looked fitter, worked harder and there looked to be more team spirit than at any time last season.  Di Canio on the touchline was fascinating to watch and it was nice to see the whole bench show such emotion after we scored.  I also liked the fact that the whole squad was signalled to go onto the pitch at the end to applaud the supporters (and the support today was excellent).

For those that hadn't realised, today was the first home win of 2011, no wonder the reaction at the end was so immense.  Virtually the whole of the Arkells stayed to applaud the last player off the pitch.

On the basis there are still a few players out injured, I imagine there will be a fair few changes to the starting 11 over the coming weeks.  Assuming today did not see our strongest team, the result is fantastic.  Onwards we go, I've got a feeling it's going to be more fun being a Swindon fan this season  :D

Aside from the game - and I maybe be pilloried for posting this - but a significant number of the Town End sung the 'Martin Aldridge' song including one or two that post on here. Much as I hate Oxford the song is not funny nor is it clever and I have no wish to be associated with it. Grow up.

Not convinced at all. He was shit, his positioning was shit, running off the ball was terrible. Timlin had to keep telling him to push up. Passing was rubbish too.

We played so much better when we had Macormack and Ferry in the middle.

I agree.
He looked off the pace and was caught out a number of times. Hopefully after a few games he'll get to grips with the pace of this league (& improve his fitness).
Nice to have Macormack and Ferry to bring on though  ;D

Not going to write a full match report as everything has been said already.

1st half J Smith and Risser were worryingly like Douglas and Prutton.

Overall the kids did alright.

Still would prefer to see Caddis at right wing as I think he is a better winger than full back.

Back eventually, had a beer in B'mth and a double Baileys in my local. MOM deffo Flint kept us in it in the first half, if it wasn't for him we could have been 2 or 3 down, so on that score well done Mr Wilson
Thought Kennedy did well and Bodin, good on you PdC for giving the youth a chance. Connell will definitely score us goals. All in all a great day out and an impressive performance barring the first 20 mins, nervousness possibly

Flint MOM. Both centre mids poor, but all subs good.

cliche time, but definite game of two halves. Players looked really nervous in the first half but second half was much better. Flint was immense, Devera looked like a rabbit in the headlamps first half but was better second half. Timlin was the biggest dissapointment today. Good player, but never a winger.

Hopefully PdC didnt give them a rocket at half time but a bit of encouragement. They certainly responded. Fingers crossed that they are now over the nerves of the big expectations.

How was Kennedy today?

Good to see him in the side and interesting to see him take the penalty.    It takes some nerve to step-up at 0-0 on the opening game of the season and slot a penalty home.

He looks to have bulked up a fair bit on last season and will be  interesting to see how he gets on for the rest of the season.

Game of two halves indeed. Brilliant piece of management from PdC et al at half time to help deliver a second half like that. Thought the subs all looked great when they came on which augers well for the rest of the year. Superb depth and we're going to need it over the course of the year. Connell's got great touch and vision, Macca has bite and drive whilst @thebulldozer looked spritely as always.

Flint was a man mountain. Tims did well to give us width and showed some neat link play. Risser was immense in the second half... once he clearly stopped trying too hard. Smithy was a revelation at the back today as well. Paolo and Doardo have clearly has a major impact on his game. Mind you, I'd have been full of it tday playing behind Flint.

Risser seems to be taking a bit of flake, I think he will be more of leader than a stand out player. He admitted he was nervous and played below par especially 1st half. He was very vocal and trying his best to lift the team throughout and I think for that and his cracking goal people should give him the benefit of the doubt. After about 30 mins after ko 3 or 4 blokes sitting close to me in the Arkells were  shouting across at Paolo that we were shit and what was he going to do about it ! We didn't start of very well but what a bunch of knobs. It got a bit heated around us with plenty of others letting them know their feelings. After our 2nd went in they were jumping around hugging each other, funny what drink does to some people. I was embarrassed for them ! Pissed me off big time.

i liked the look of both de vita and bodin, though they're a bit similar to play together regularly. It will be interesting to see who partners the new 'big man' striker that is likely to come in. We have a plethora of options in de vita, bodin and connell as well as kerroucche but i'm not too sure what sort of striker he is? I think one will have to go out on loan, as well as a centre mid. I liked the look of mccormack i'd like to see him in the middle with risser.

Thought he did a great job out on the wing, put some great crosses in and made some damn good passes, don't recall him giving posession away once either. As for Kennedey, the lad had a cracking game considering the lack of first team football he's had lately, made some great runs and put in some good crosses.

You lot have pretty much covered it all.

We were very luck not to be 3-0 down at HT. I'm going to put the first half down to nerves, as second half we were ace, I really enjoyed watching it second half, Flint was an absolute mountain, he is going to be awesome this year, reckon he will score a few goals aswell.

The most positive thing for me was the strength in depth, we had players coming off the bench that were improving the sqaud, I thought Connell looked very good when he came on.

Overall, a good performance to build on, bring on City!

Interesting to read the opinions of Kennedy & Timlin.

A lot of our problems the first half did seem to stem from that side, but in fairness both of them were (like most of the team) much better in the second half.

Thought that Connell was much the sharpest of the strikers in the box, although the other two worked very hard neither looked like scoring.

And I know there is an almighty love in with Ferry, but to say he was an improvement when he came on is laughable. I know he only had a few mins, but other than miss a very good chance I can't recall him getting that involved tbf.  That said, I thought McCormack did very well when he came on.

I'm not (and probably never will be) Phil Smiths biggest fan, but credit where its due him was vert good yesterday, particularly with crosses which has tended to be his weakness in the past. He did get a bit of a groan from a few in the DRS in the first half once when he was slow to release the ball, but to be fair I thought that side of his game was good as well.

Never heard it yesterday and yes i think the idiots will get shown the door if they do...anyway the WE ARE DI CANIOS RED AND WHITE ARMY with the DR stand was brilliant,a bit like old times.

As for the match the fitness won us this match i reckon,we were running rings round them a the end and could have won by six.
Flint will be hard to dislodge on that performance and in Rizzer we have a quality player no doubt.
Bodin did well and have to say that Phil Smith played well, his handling at crosses was the best i have seen from him.
We can only get better..so the rest of Lg 2 should be worried.

Anyone else have any probs with their season tickets at the turnstile? I spent a good (embarrassed) 3 minutes wiggling my card around until eventually it allowed me entry.... thats gonna be fun for every home game!

The slot was much bigger than the card, which I imagine was the issue - I take it this is because matchday tickets are bigger?

Oh, and if any of you lot were the smart alec bastard who murmured at least three times 'he's probably got the card the wrong way round' in a real condescending way - fuck you, I had it perfectly orientated thank you very much.

My son went through first, which was a good job, as I had to mess about with his a bit before the green light came on.  The queue certainly didn't seem to be moving any quicker and the turnstiles were still manned as well in case there were problems I imagine?  I'm not sure why the slot on the season ticket turnstile has to be big enough to take paper tickets still? Unless I'm wrong, even for cup games the card will be used?

At the start of the match Crewe were lively and good movement all over the pitch but as the game moved into the second half they looked tired and looked like the young team they are.

30 days solid training with one day off will prove it's worth in the early stages of this season. PdC does seem like a bit of a taskmaster when it comes to fitness.

8,762 crowd with 124 Creweies there cos their fans don't travel well or very from Gresty Road (sorry the Alexandra Stadium!).

Lets hope my head is wrong and my heart wins with a thumping 3-0 win!

Should have gone with my heart and not my head :D

Enjoyed the game for a change. Pretty much everything has been covered so I won't ramble on. Poor first half but good second. We were never really going to lose once the penalty went in. Risser looked a bit off the pace as did Smith but hopefully it was just nerves and Risser's goal was fantastic so that should give him some confidence now. McCormack did well when he came on. I can't help but feel with a bit more fitness he'll be in there alongside Risser. Same goes for Connell who I thought was lively when he came on as well. Timlin did alright but he's not a winger. Will be interesting to see how Esajas looks when he comes back into contention. Thought Ritchie was a class above. Wasn't he most lively game but you can see he has good quality for this level. Flint deserved MOTM. He won everything. Would like to see him paired with Comazzi as Devera was a bit suspect at the back.

I struggle to see many negatives about yesterday. We only played well for 45 minutes but still won the game 3-0. For me it's a perfect start and who can grumble with sitting in 1st place after one game? Start as you mean to go on and all that. I hope so anyway.

Phil Smith deserves to keep his place on that showing. It's all very well getting in a new keeper with the aim of making him your number one, but he should earn it, not be handed it.

Smiffy should have the jersey until he no longer deserves it.

Agreed and I think Di Canio will have that point of view too. If he starts 'fringe' players because they've been the best in training then he's almost certainly going to keep faith with players who have played well on matchday.

Any review of the game has to start with Aden Flint. The bloke is at a critical stage in his Town career, and he absolutely grasped his chance with both hands yesterday. Immense. He bailed out Devera, twice and Caddis with tackles of 100% commitment, and never looked like being beaten in the air at any stage. Ive been critical of P Smith, but he also had a great game yesterday. Other positives, Kennedy played well, Timlin did well considering he was out of position, our right side of Ritchie and Caddis was very strong (as it should be, 2 players who should be playing a higher level).

I like J Smith, he's a young player and we need to support his development. Risser scored a great goal, but he was behind the play too much. I think Di Canio should give him another chance at City, but if not then McCormack should come in for Cheltenham. I would say De Vita and Bodin are too simmilar to play together, we need more bite, and I thought Bodin actually looked the better player yesterday.

It was a nervy start, and we were dead lucky first half, so although the scoreline says otherwise, we need a massive improvement to keep winning games. Have to say that Crewe did give up in the second half and if I was one of their fans I would be dissapointed, because they did let their heads drop very badly.

Brilliant goal from Risser, right behind it. Great.

Having seen the Reading game and yesterday's I'd say Flint is absolutely undroppable.

Everyone has already said he won everything in the air, which of course he should, but it was his actual heading that really impressed me in that he was heading balls right into the centre all game long in many situations where nearly all of our previous defenders would have been finding touch.  Impeccable

I agree, which is something Wilson never did - as soon as Lucas was fit he went back in regardless.

Hell, Smith had the game of his life at the Valley and then got dropped for Wembley, piss poor management and an inexcusable decision.

But as it stands now i'm quite happy Lucas was in goal, neither of them would have kept out their goal and there would be the Smith haters on here who would probably be convinced we'd be in the Championship now if it wasn't for Smith.

Judging by the highlights, it would suggest that the team have quite a bit of work to do as a defensive unit but look pretty comfortable going forward - is that a fair assessment?

Timlin looked as though he created a few chances with crosses from the left and Kennedy's penalty was impressive given his relative lack of experience.

Devera was like a rabbit in headlights first half, but improved as the game went on. Caddis is always likely to let wingers get round him. The 2 central midfielders were getting in each others way to start with, and were a bit off the pace - they will either get better or get dropped.

Think its been well summed up by many but things that stood out to me:

Flint. For someone who looked like he was going to be the 3rd choice youngster this season what a performance. Didn't put a foot wrong and looked confident and composed. Immense.

Central midfield partnership in the first half were surprisingly anonymous, hopefully just nerves.

After half time we looked much better as we seemed to pressure crewe a lot more from front to back, giving them no time on the ball.

Impressed with liveliness of McCormack and Connell when they came on.

3-0 a flattering scoreline and there are certainly areas that still need working on. Having said that just a relief to see us win, and the atmosphere was great. Loved the team spirit the players showed and the fact PdC waited to clap the fans and be last down the tunnel at the end.

Di Canio said a number of players were suffering from nerves, especially Risser. Thought it was interesting that he said this was a big chance for Risser (and others) and that they were worried about fucking it up. I guess for a number of them this is the biggest club they've played for and they aren't too accustomed to playing in front of 8k crowds.

A spokesman when asked explained....we had a fucking great Rottweiller for security that pissed against the same lampost for years,it was just natural that we named ourselfs after sed lampost.

I think the people that only decided to get ST's recently have the barcode printed length ways across the card rather than up one end like I imagine most of us have.

Under 40 and she might be too young, but unless Crispy's parents are some of the oldest people alive, too old is unlikely for someone who (allegedly) puts a lot of his time and energy into Help the Aged.
