Post by: herthab on Tuesday, November 10, 2009, 08:21:37
Wemberly, Wemberly, We're The famous Swindon Town And We're Going To Wemberly!

(We're probably not though).

Cold, wet, miserable weather, no atmosphere, shit attendance, 4 hour round trip, can't wait...

5 hour round trip, touch and go for a 7:30 kick off and it's going to cost a lot in fuel and ticket money.

I doubt I will go, though I thought I wanted to but Saturday's performance hasn't enthused me.

Douglas straight back in and murmours of Macnamee & Ferry "injured" so I suspect he and Ferry will be rested, I'm hoping Easton is given match time tonight and Charlie Austin is given a decent run out, and perhaps see Henshall in the 2nd half.

I think there is a rule that you have to play x amount of players that have played during the season so far, so won't be many changes from either team.

One plus point is that it is Tope's last game though....

Ands have 6 of your main starting 11 or something., I remember when this rule was changed teams were fined all over the place. I think We were fined when Sturrock was in charge for fielding an "under strength team" in the JPT despite winning against Brentford?

When we go away...we outsing the away fans at most matches, its the way it is....on away matches the fans that sing are all stood together, home matches see the fans that sing spread around the ground.....its down to the team to get the fans singing(Southampton) sometimes.

Scary to think it's now over 20 years ago, that we turned over Norwich 2-0 in the tin pot full members cup...10,000 + that freezing Feb night, cracking atmosphere, no need to shut the TE... fucking bands or owt.

Norwich had some right cunts in their side....the sainted Culverhouse aside, and were topflight, we also did them in the cup at Carrow Road.  The likes of Steve Bruce and Mike Phelan..cocks of the first order....throw in the annoying sweatie Fleck, and it was guffaws all round as Shaun Elliot notched an og...as the Canaries crumbled under incessant pressure from the likes of Chalkie, Bamber and Quinn. I know it's not Obadeyi, Paynter and Revell... :)

Good to see Easton getting a start. That line up suggests he's out wide and JPM in the middle.

I am not but then I think a team should always have wingers. Whether its 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 you need two wingers.

There was a young man called Dave,
Who'd leave big gaps between an occasional Shave,
He'd whinge about wingers,
and whine about whingers,
Until someone got fed up and hit him in the face.

Who'd leave big gaps between an occasional Shave,
He'd whinge about wingers,
and whine about whingers,
Until someone got fed up and hit him in the face.

There was a you fella called Dave
Who fucked a dead whore in a cave
You'd think of him blunt
to fuck a dead cunt
but think of the money he'll save

Title: Re: Swindon V Norwich. Official Champions League Thread.
Post by: flammableBen on Tuesday, November 10, 2009, 20:40:13
There are 48 teams which get to be in the JPT yeah? It guess it's still just north and south, so 8 of those teams will make a regional semi final. So teams should average about a semi every 6 years. Obviously you'd expect teams who spend more time in L1 than L2 to get there a bit more often due to quality, but I guess that gets averaged out a bit by the fact you can get a bye through the first round.

I guess we're due a semi then?

Just got back, and we played a lot better than Saturday. We controlled most of the game, and they only had two efforts of any note. The back four was solid and didn't give much away. I thought Douglas and Easton played very well together, and I would'nt mind seeing that midfield partnership in a league game. Paynter worked his arse off, and when Austin came on he showed more in 25 minutes than Hutchinson has done since he's been here, but their back four won a lot in the air all game.

The lineman on the Arkells side had a shocker, hardly getting a decision right all game, and you know that Cureton would not miss, even though he didn't have a particularly good night and celebrated like he'd won the Cup, the tosser.

So that's 2 cup competitions now knocked out on penalties.

Went tonight...very,very dissapointing for me,Cuthbert and Greer apart it was pants...passionless and full of players playing out of position....Douglas was sound but spent the whole match back peddling to pick the ball up....Paynter,Revell and Hutchinson were poor though to be fair Hutchinson was played in midfield!
Easton was rubbish...JPM was too deep..i for one is getting pissed off with these home performances.
Oh and Smith for the penalties just stood like a lemon and watched..no gamesmanship no real attempt to pt abit of pressure on the takers.
Believe me ime one of Swindons biggest fans but that was shit tonight for me...playing a game that would have looked negative away from home.
Austin should start next match, took his pen well and did more in 20 mins than Paynter Revel and Hutch...he looks very promising.
Very cheezed off.

I enjoyed the shootout to be honest. I think it was mainly down to the fact that I wasn't really too fussed either way. Shame we lost but oh well.

We played better than Saturday. Thought we deserved to win the game if i'm being honest. We were a lot better in midfield. Easton looked quite good and it was great to see Douglas back. Would like to see Easton in for Timlin. We passed it well but there were some dire hoofs mixed in as well. We seemed to plod along like we did against them at Carrow Road and didn't really create anything clear cut at all. Last 10 minutes was really good to see. We picked up and started looking like we really wanted to win the game. Better quality from Manks, JFL and Macca may well have seen some end product. All the players were decent enough although Greer and Hutchinson had poor games. Cuthbert was immense again and Austin looked very good when he came on. His touch is superb for a player who was playing at such a low level before he signed for us.

Agree with 69, thought we did ok until the final third, total lack of fire power and finesse in front of goal.  No guile or craft in that particular area.  Bill P put in an exceptional shift, Hutchinson was - well - crap.  Charlie looked quite bright when he came on, wasn't frightened to have a go, even if it was 30 yards out.  Not a bad tenners worth, just a disappointing result.

I think Leefer is being a bit harsh myself.

First half was fairly even, a bit ploddy but not many chances. A low whipped cross by JPM should have been scored by Paynter.

Second half we were the better team but didn't really turn the screw until the last 15 upping the pace and pinning Norwhich back. Still didn't create any clearcut chances but put in numerous crosses.

Personally I thought JPM had a good game.Lots of good crosses and a decent work rate.

Good turn out for Norwhich too.

Look...i said our defence played well...Smith didnt have a shot to save, but thats probably down to the fact that our midfield in Douglas and Easton were playing like defenders too...the rest was pants....JPM did ok but again he was too deep.

Hmm, personally I got home a lot happier after losing tonight than I did from the win on Saturday. Pretty entertaining game and thought it was a much better performance all round, especially second half. It wasn't a game I expected to win or a competition I'm particularly bothered about, so I was just pleased with what seemed to me a much more coherent performance. And Austen gave me some hope for the future - he looked pretty lively when he came on.

I thought it was an ok game to be honest,I've been to a lot worse Simod autoglass and whatever name it's been in the past.I dont think these games are ever likley to be fantastic unless we draw the pox.Im not sure if it's me but it had that friendly type feel to it although both teams wanted to win it i did't see any crunching full blooded tackles except for when douglas looked like he was going to be injured.

It was something to do on a tuesday night, although it's a shame we did't win, it wasn't crucial and that's how i feel the players viewed it.

Surely austin deserves a start in the next game.

Whereas DW said he wanted to win the game, i'm not so sure or alternatively some of our players didn't give a fuck. As Russ says there was no tackling, no great desire to beat Norwich reserves. In the last 15 we just weren't committing men forward and were always outnumbered. It very much had the feel of a friendly rather than a must win game to bring in revenue.
On the positive side, Austin had some very good touches and looked lively. From that 20 minute cameo he's ahead of all the loan strikers for me.

I thought it was a good game. Agree with most of the comments, Austin looked good and Hutchinson was utter rubbish. Austin deserves a chance, nothing to lose. Another thing was that I thought Lescinel had his best game in a Town shirt tonight. Got forward more and looked more composed.

No. Go an post on Thisis because that post sounded like one of those idiots. I think he's been pretty decent. He's offered us something different to Billy but they just can't play together. He's like a better Barry Corr for me. But of course our fans would rather have Corr...

We looked pretty decent when we went 442 for the last 15 minutes surely Wilson can see that Austin and Paynter is our best pairing, Hutchinson should just be sent back now and I can not make my mind up about Revell. It was also good to see Douglas back in the middle doing the simple things that Timlin struggles at.

I might go and nerdily check this out now.

I fucking despair sometimes some of the comments on the Advertiser website are just plain laughable. Half those mongs posting clearly didn't go to the game tonight and some are even saying their running out of patience with Danny  ::)

I thought we did alright tonight. Decent game of footy and i though Douglas, Easton, JPM, Paynter & Cuthbert were all my pick of the bunch tonight.

Charlie showed some decent stuff when he came on and i have a feeling he'll play a big part in our team next season but for now he is doing well with the sub appearances

I like Revell but like already said he is too much in the mould of Paynter they just can't play off each other.

I guess i must be the only person who thought Hutchinson looked better tonight and at times was quite menacing.

Phil Smith did a decent job tonight and looks so much better under the new coach.

So, over the last 6, we've won just 2 and those were against Exeter and Aldershot.

9/10
Wolves 0-0 Lost 6-5 League Cup
Exeter 1-1 Won 4-3 Paintpot
8/9
Aldershot 2-2 Won 7-6 Paintpot
7/8
Barnet 1-1 Lost 0-2 FA Cup (this one was embarassing)
6/7
Brentford 2-2 Lost 4-3 League Cup
3/4
Leeds 2-2 Lost 4-3 League Cup

Tonight wasn't too bad for a tenner. Should of won the match in normal time though.

We still need a striker. Cunt that he is, Cureton is exactly the type of player we are desperate for.

Austen looks promising. I hope he builds on tonights performance but that we don't ruin him by asking him to do too much too soon.

Whoever decided to shut the town end for the last two games needs a swift kick in the bollocks (or cunt). Two matches with no fucking atmosphere must have an effect on the players, and the penalty comp tonight in front of an empty stand was a disgrace.

I really dont give a fuck about how much the club saved on police or stewarding with this wanky decision. If we'd gone through tonight the income would of exceded those costs - and some.

The Arkell's has to be open for hospitality etc, which is fine. Why the fuck didn't they just shut down the Don Rogers stand and fill up the Arkells and Town End though?

Ace as our new board have been, they need a bit of fucking nouse in the football world as well as general business accumen.  A hostile Town End may of been the difference tonight.

You're not the only one. I've been one of his biggest critics but thought he looked a different player tonight and our best striker until he went off. Not sure what it was, but he seemed to have more confidence.

Its the first time I've seen Austin play and I was pretty impressed. He won most, if not all, of the headers he went up for which was surprising as it didn't look like he had a chance with some of them. His touch on the ball was excellent as was his passing - the best I've seen from one of our strikers this season. He had probably our best chance with the header but it came to him a bit awkward and he couldn't get any power on it.

My only criticism is that he got pushed around a lot by their defenders, maybe he doesn't have the upper body strength yet or maybe he just needs to get used to playing at this level. Though that's not really a criticism, as its to be expected and I'm sure he'll get to grips with it.

Not sure he is ready to start yet but then I'm not sure he is any worse than the other options we've got.

I thought we were pretty good last night.  I know they were at half strength, but we had the much better chances, just kept hitting them straight at the keeper.

Hutchinson was very lively in "the hole" and seemed to have a bit more confidence about his play, actually wanting the ball and moving it on, not afraid to have a shot when it opened up.  I don't think he's up to much, but he was good last night.

Revell was also good, I thought.  Won most things in the air and linked up well with Lescinel down the left flank a few times.  He also won us a fair amount of possesion just from chasing down their keeper and defenders and forcing missed passes.

Cuthbert and Greer were, as always, top quality and very solid.

It was my first time in the Don Rogers Stand and I hated it.  I hate not standing and singing, and for a cup tie I think you need that, even if there were only 500 in the Town End, at least we would have made a bit of noise instead of just clapping every now and then.  A shootout in front of an empty stand is just plain wrong.

Overall, a good effort and good display.  Unlucky.

Safe to say it wasn't a classic but was a hell of a lot better than saturday.

I have no idea if it was because the town end was shut/it was only a tenner a ticket/or whether i was just plain unlucky but i seemed to have more than my fair share of moaners sat near me (in my usual seat) last night.

The highlights were an old boy complete with his family shouting at Wilson to sub Douglas after 15 minutes because he is shit and then following various inane ramblings during the game shouting at Wilson to resign after we lost the penalty shootout because his team is shit.

I thought others may object but then there was also a bloke in front of me who shouted at Greer to "get off the pitch" after he cleared a ball (his job) but overhit it out for a goal kick.

For crying out loud if people are going to get on Wilson, Dougie's and expecially Greer's backs after a 0-0 draw with Norwich then there is no hope.

I'm seriously starting to not enjoy going to the County Ground. It's not due to the football, it's the ever increasing air of negativity that is permeating in a large number of the home support.

It's fucking depressing and ruins what used to be a great day out.

There seems to be a lot more people who go with unrealistic expectations, who demand fantastic football every week, who expect all our players to be premiership standard, who believe we should be in the Championship, etc, etc.

I go in the hope of seeing a good game, in the hope that we'll get a good cup run, in the hope that we'll secure promotion and in the hope that our players will put in 100% effort.

But I also go realising that our players aren't world beaters, we are a lower league side, we have no divine right to be playing in a higher division, we aren't the richest or best supported team in our league, we will lose/draw games, we will sometimes play badly.

Not so long ago all supporters of teams outside the elite few had the same views, hope countered by realism. Now it seems everyone expects and demands.

Can I suggest you move to the centre of the DRS stand around row M, we are a nice bunch of happy clappers who support the side, have the odd grown, very rarely do you hear abuse thrown at Swindon players.

Re the match: I thought Hutchinson had one of his best games last night, tremendous piece of skill on the left hand touch line in the first half.

Austin looked very good, he must start in the next game.

Second half was quite entertaining, especially the last 20 minutes, good value for a tenner.

Totally agree with what you say. Was it Herthab who stood up near the Town End?
The atmosphere, well there was no atmosphere for 80 minutes of the match, very low-key can't help the players when it is that quiet.

Gazza for the amount of Norwich fans in The Arkells I thought they were pretty poor, they only came out in song every 15 minutes.

Good post Steve and one I agree with. I just feel it needs to be pointed out that it was Fitton himself who claimed Championship football in 3 years and it was Wilson himself who at the start of the season was talking about the play offs.

I know there is a fine line between being ambitious/deluded and unambitious/realistic but I don't think those types of comments help.

This is my thinking as well. I've started to leave matches early because i HATE hearing the team booed, which from what i understand, is any result other than a resounding home win.

Our fanbase is full of thick, knuckle-dragging idiots who are ruining my enjoyment. I remember when i could leave a draw, or even a loss, and find the positives and not always feel bad. Now i almost always leave angry or even livid at some of the mindless shit the idiots around me talk or shout about. It's like a virus, too much negativity just spreads and affects everyone in the end.

What we need are armed stewards. Anyone who shouts negative criticism without justifying it, or makes squawking sounds, gets their face blown through the back or their skull.

Yep, agree with that, although sitting in 8th place it's possible we could get into the playoff places come May and I hope we do. Fitton just said what he believes is possible, as did Wilson.

I believe it's possible as well, I just don't think we should be demanding it. Bigger clubs than us struggle to get out of this league.

Back of the Town End , Terry (who complained to the adver about not fitting in the new shirts) and the guy that looks like Beano, every play, or touch they complain and start shouting at the players. It's not a kid! He's been in the Town End making that noise (I'm guessing it's a peacock sqwark?) for a few years now, and I've heard him at away games too.  He stands fairly near to me in the Town End and can get some serious volume on that sqwark!

I've been going more years than most, and nothing has really changed. Insofar, there have always been periods when the football, atmosphere etc is dire, and periods when it's been on an up.

What tends to happen, is that in a lull, many fans flake off, as can be seen with many on here.  Oddly it's often those who seem most partisan who drop off first.

When it picks up, then new fans are gained...some last the course others don't. Occasionally during an up, a few lapsed fans return, but it's not common.

There will always be maybe a thousand or so, who are impervious to changes in fortune, who will go come what may.

There will always be moaners and its up to the real fans to drown them out with chants and encouragement.

Last night was cracking value in my opinion, but all too much fans do feel short changed by football. Football used to be unbelievable value for money, something cherished by the working classes. That has gone now, and its changed the mindset of fans for good. Its games like that you really miss standing, because it feels so much more acceptable shouting your head off for a JPT game when you are standing up.

I thought Easton did well when he came on. Austin also showed some good touches and I dont think he gave the ball away once. Douglas was brilliant. Revell and Paynter as a partnership looked OKish for a while then went stale. It was quite a good game, even if some players were taking it a bit easy and standing off each other.

Obviously dissapointed to be out because we finnished the tie by far the stronger side. Still need more guile (as was mentioned before) and creativity up front.

oh yeah! For some reason I thought Hutchinson played in the middle and Easton replaced him!

I think Easton did pair up with Douglas in the middle when Hutchinson came off for McNamee? He looked much better there, didnt really notice him before then!

Easton and Douglas look very similar on the pitch don't they.

Maybe that's why DW doesn't select Nature Boy to play more often.

i wouldn't go that far, but entertaining enough for a JPT game if a little devoid of clear cut chances.

I thought it was a bit crap apart from the last 20mins or so...

It was better than the Woking game though.
