There used to be one in the Cheney Manor trading estate, sort of hidden away right down teh end of  a lane, right near the railway. There's also some interesting waters down there, where you can fish.

I'd been there many times as a nipper with the old man and once with my first car to get new brake calipers. I know it's around there somewhere but kinda wondered at times whether i was just mistaken.

I bought 4 new calipers and all the hoses from there, admittedly for a Fiat Uno, but it cost me £20. Total. Breakers are the way forward.

I reversed into a traffic light the other day cracking the bumper on my A3. As fortune would have it the car is in for a service on the 13th November, however I am not looking forward to seeing how much it is going to be to replace the bumper as well as the service!

Highworth Breakers is the place in Brindley Close.  Bit of a confusing name for somewhere hidden down the back of Cheney Manor, but it is a fine establishment.

For some years I used to drive Saab 96's, which are a mighty fine motor, parts were expensive, or difficult to find, so I used to go to Raynors, which was literally in a field in the middle of nowhere out towards Chippenham? or maybe Calne.

For anyone interested in the delights of teh fishing water mentioned earlier, here is a website on the wonders of Raychem Lagoon.

If you like a bit of industrial landscape, then this old bit of Swindon railway history is worth a look.

I'm more interested in the historical aspect...but I like the tone of their mission statement...no more than I'd expect from something in Rodbourne though. It appears it's also known as the Rodbourne Lagoon.

Its good to see SBC employs a fishing officer...no honestly.

Didn't they used to transport coal there? Its a very coal-ey type surface

It was used as a supply of water for steam locos....its quite possible that coal came in somewhere around there, because steam locos need it, and it had to be brought in. A lot came from S Wales, but some came up from Somerset.

Opposite the Outlet Village where the newish flats and houses are, used to be a giant coal and clinker dump, where all the waste from steam boilers got dumped.  There was a local legend that Brunels redundant Broad Gauge locos were buried underneath but sadly when it was all cleared no such joy  :(

You know what, I don't really know how the fuck I managed it! I swear it wasn't there when I looked before reversing!

interesting thread.highworth breakers is still there,as is the ford breakers right next to it.also right behind(but the other side of the train track) used to be other scrap dealers.i have no idea if they are still there?rayners is out past wottoon bassett and is deffo worth a look for the parts mentioned.also that massive yard out challow way might have what you need(you remove the parts yourself there though).there was one i phoned up that contacts breakers all over the country, they then ring you and all have differing prices for the item you want.you choose the breakers you want then its sent to you.i bought a ignition-key block for my old renault 21 that way.

also a while ago there was an article in the adver about rachem lagoon as it was featured on a tv programme(alan titchmarsh i think)where they stunned all the fish to monitor what was in there.

Is that the lake back of Cheney Manor Road.....Plaum's Pit.  You can walk down Kiln Lane and work your way through for a walking route into north Swindon...although the route to Blunsdon via Sevenfields has got severely buggered by the Shabby Meads development.

Yeah thats it, very funny story about teh owner of teh site.  He bought it with 8 caravans to fish, a tenant complained about his caravan (rent £3 a week) and he had to replace them with 8 four bed houses, made a killing!

I dont think thats plaums pit. Your on about the little pond behind the dentists aren't you? That had caravans and has just been re-developed. Plaums pit is a few hundred meters away. Thats not quite as good as raychem for fishing

I like stories about people wishing they'd kept their mouth shut.

Best one ever is John Prescott granting an illegally camped group of gypsies legal right to stay on some field out the back of some wealthy blokes house. They devalued the area, broke into his house, etc. Anyway, he was so pissed off, he bought all the fields around John Prescott's house and gave them to gypsies to live on. :D

My mate ally once managed to get himself handcuffed to a 7 year old gypsy girl. I'll make him come to the merlin one day before a game so he can tell the story and buy me pints.
