Title: Tennis

Am I imagining this or is Andy Murray 2 sets up in the semi's of the US open?

Yes, it's happening. As good as he is - Murray irritates me.

Very entertaining game, Murray pummelled Nadal for 2 sets and was well worthy of his 2-0 lead. He's a break down in the third 3-2 but now we have a rain delay.

edit: annabel croft, I still would

Post by: Iffy's Onion Bhaji on Saturday, September 6, 2008, 20:14:21
I still think Murray will blow it though. The rain could help him but then it could help Nadal. Most people were starting to watch the tennis more than the drap first half of the football at the pub before the rain came.

Title: Re: Tennis
Post by: Batch on Saturday, September 6, 2008, 20:28:19
You may be right, Nadal is #1 for a reason. But Murray is improving and I doubt that many would have had it down for (worst case) a 5 setter.

cricket's stops because bowlers would break their legs in wet weather (somewhere between broken and having a stretched muscle anyway  ;))

the US Open is the best sporting event after the Ashes, probably then the Ryder Cup. Then the Olympics.

Ashes is that thing where we are so bad at it that when we do eventually win the players get honoured by the ueen. It a two horse race FFS, and we are consantly done by a nation with half our population (but twice our sunshine).

Ryder Cup is good, largely because anything we can beat the yanks at is good. Golf is dull to watch on TV and too time consuming and difficult to play.

Clearly football pisses on both of them.

Anyone know the odds on Nadal to beat Murray?  Surely worth a flutter if evens or better.

Edit Nadal 5/4 to beat Murray.  Might have a go on that, think Britain's no.1 may get a little nervous if he gets a chance to finish Nadal off.

No doubt about it that Murray can be a stroppy little cock. Maybe that's why he's equalled out best showing at a Grand Slam event since 1936 (Lloyd, Greg the Canadian, Murray). I'd rather a sweaty win things than any other nation to be honest. I even like him more than public school boy loser Henman.

Of course he's playing up the anti-English thing. We'd do the same to the Jocks, and rightly so as they are inferior.

Ha ha good one Batchy boy!

I think people need to chill out a bit about this "Murray anti english" thing.  Why should he be pro english?  He's Scottish, he went over to Spain in his teens to develop as a tennis player, so it's not really even like a Hoy situation where the bloke can reasonably be expected to be grateful for the english amenities in Manchester.  So why should he like england, especially their football or rugby team?  It's just another country, except it's not it's the auld enemy.

That isn't a rant by the way, just a thought.

Title: Re: Tennis
Post by: Batch on Monday, September 8, 2008, 09:40:28
He does represent GB*, I just don't care if the Scots claim him all to themself. It's nice for the downtrodden to have something to look up to.

*Except when he cries off Davis cup duty or can't be arsed with the Olympics.

Title: Re: Tennis
Post by: janaage on Monday, September 8, 2008, 10:11:50
That's fine if he represents GB, at Tennis.  However it really doesn't mean that he has to have some sort of respect for the footballers and rugby players of england.

I must admit I never liked Tim Henman, oxford scummer, loved by the beeb, no personality, no passion (apart from the fist clench), stupid face.  Although Greg was okay.

Chalky said "If he wanted to endear himself then maybe he could have actually tried at the Olympics."

But I think the point you are missing is that he doesn't want to endear himself to the english public does he?  If you like him then fair enough, but I don't think he's that bothered about it.  Fair play to the bloke.  And as for the Olympics I don't really see that being the "dream" for the modern day tennis professional, a grand slam is what it's all about.

You could see from the first set that Federer had it in the bag, okay he looked like he'd make a fight of it in the second but I think Federer is just too good.  I don't know about Fed being back, not sure he ever really went away!

Still over half a million quid in Murray's back pocket for his efforts, I bet he won't be able to sleep tonight knowing that he hasn't got the unconditional support of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Title: Re: Tennis
Post by: Batch on Tuesday, September 9, 2008, 08:16:11
When Fed has a couple of winless tournaments he's definitely not at his best. Yesterday he just blew Murray away - he's back to his best.

I think Murray suffered as much mentally as physically. That match against Nadal took a lot out of him on both counts.  The pressure must be immense even if it isn't on a conscious level.

He was in a similar position of 'how will he ever be good enough to  beat him' after playing Nadal in Wimbledon.  But he found a way past Nadal, now all he has to do is find a way past probably the greatest player to play the game (although he's already beaten Federer twice).

Title: Re: Tennis

No he hasn't said he's anti english, he's said he hopes your football team lose, can we not separate wanting a team to lose a game from hating a particular nation's people?

Wanting a team to lose is very much being anti that team.

Yes that's right Sam, wanting a TEAM to lose is very much being anti that TEAM, but it does not make me a racist.  If I want the US to lose a football match that's not to say I hate the US.  I just don't want to see them win, it has nothing to do with my mate from Portland, or the Americans I have met, I just don't want to see the US be successful.  Same goes for england's football and rugby team.

As you'd expect my closest friends/family are english and I'm glad, they're a good bunch, doesn't mean I want to see their football team do well.

The Jocks just love it when we lose - nuff said.
I was in Gran Canaria a few years back we were playing Germany and they all came in with Germany shirts on.
All skulked off at 5-1!!
Also replied to a few emails taking the pixx out of non qualification for the Euros recently.........i asked them how i would manage sitting out a major tournament.......as they have had enough practice over the years!

Murray can win a slam but the likes of federer and nadal being around for a long time yet will hardly help him. They are a cut above the rest includng Murray.

And of course england fans never do anything of the sort to antagonise the scots?

Federer was amazing and showed it. He would have beaten anyone last night.

Taking a step back and to put Murray's achievement into perspective, Nadal does not like that surface at all (never made the final), whereas Federer never loses there. The boy did well to make the final but I really don't think he has closed the gap on the top two in real terms.

I wonder why you post on a football forum. Is there a reason?

I'm not trying to antagonise, I'm just wondering.
i think it's because even though i slag it off all the time, i actually quite like it

take the football fun culture in england - on the one hand i think it's pretty pathetic and but on the other, i think it's brilliant

my views on football are completely paradoxical, but i only bother to say the bad stuff here because there's enough people talking about the good bits. and it's funny watching people getting wound up by a few off the cuff comments

going back to dv's question about cricket in the rain - one analogy i thought of, is a fast bowler playing on hard ground with short grass and only small spikes, if it rains it's like trying to run in 20 yards on an ice rink in trainers before jumping but when you land the ground gives way underneath you. doesn't sound like much fun to me either

back to the tennis... murray was a pleasure to watch during the open. his first serve has improved massively (needs the second to follow suit) but it wasn't as good in the final as previous rounds. that and federer was in irrestible form

It's a fair point, but physically and mentally he was much tougher against Nadal than at any previous point in his career.

The points gap betwen Murray (4) and Djorkivic (3) is big, but I think he will show he is improving by bridging this gap.

I've got a feeling that Murray has peaked.
