Title: The Unofficial Olympic thread
Post by: janaage on Friday, August 8, 2008, 13:31:19
So final the Chinese Olympics are here, didn't really think much to the opening ceremony (well the bits I saw).  Can't say I'm looking forward to much of the actual sports either, more focussed on the domestic football scene.  Maybe the Olympics will grow on me.

Anyone that anti-China, or should sport and politics not mix?

I'm am no fan of the olympics to be honest. Once every four years the world cares about someone running 100m very fast or in the case of GB - rowing.

I can see it's importance etc but it just ain't for me. Saying that, I'll probably end up watching more than I plan too.

I think everyone should at least try and watch the highlight on you tube, I was honestly stunned by some of the things they have created and i usually find opening ceremonies boring.
A massive plasma television screen that goes all the way around the stadium for a start with an effect of waterfall pouring in the the stadium and a massive globe that came up from under the pitch with people running around it using wires. not doing it justice but just stunning.

is there an official thread?

I dont care about the olympics and wont watch any of it on purpose.I like that thing where loads of people go round a velodrome on bikes without brakes, not sure what its called though. It would be improved if the bikes had spikey whels and guns and stuff though.

The 'wrongness' of the Olympics can be summed up by our team. I don't mean its dismal medal count, I mean its name "Team GB".

It is just so gay.

That said I like a bit of the Track and field, rowing, etc. Not that bothered to make special arrangement to see it, but if its on I'll happily watch it.

What really pisses me off are the stupid events:
- Walking. Fuck me, man has been doing it for years. Whoopie.
- Dressage . What the fuck is the point. Oooh look at my preddy hoooorse. It's a sport for big girls who couldn't let go of My Little Pony isn't it.
- Ribbon Chasing Gymnastics. As if twirling ribbons is really a sport.
- Synchronised Swimming - No further explanation needed.
- BMX - It's not 19fucking83. Are we to have Hacky sacking and yoyo as well.
- Womens football. I rate it slightly above going to the zoo and poking zoo animal with a stick.

I'd also discount some sports for which the Olympics isn't the pinnacle:
- I like tennis, but it can fuck off back to the Grand Slams for it's peak.
- Football. The World Cup owns the Olympics.

Any other suggestions for banishment to Room 101?

Any suggestions for replacement sports?

It didn't though Sam, we had it on over here at it defo started at 2000 (their time) not 8 mins past.

Like others I did enjoy the olympics when I was younger in 84 I used to run around my Grandad's garden pretending to be Daley Thompson (until he told me off for damaging the plants I was using as hurdles), waiting for my Nan to come home from work to give me my bottle of Lucozade.

92 was cool too with Linford winning gold.  96 was when I started going off the games when the flippin yanks got to host it again!!!  Didn't watch much of 00 and 04 although I did watch Steve R get his fifth gold.

And no Orvil, in the words of Bob H "there is no official thread".

According to medal winning stat thingies (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/olympics_2004/3608158.stm), the last olympics was our 2nd best performance since 1924, only losing out to 1984 when loads of teams didn't turn up.

Maybe you'd enjoy stuff more if you stopped blaming non-existent groups for failings which aren't happening.

i haven't seen the stats ben. but i'd take a punt on us not winning as many golds as we used to.i do still enjoy it but we dont seem to get the winners we used to.maybe my perception is all wrong mind?

It's the lack of track and field success that limits the enjoyment of the games.  I can't get excited about some bloke in a dinghy getting passed some bhoys before some other bloke in a dinghy.

Where's the decent 100m, 110m hurdles, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m athletes gone?

(anything longer than this is boring - apart from the 67,492km steepchase)

How many events were there in 1924, how many now?  Surely there are fair more medals to win these days compared with ye olden days.

only one thing i care about in these games...

that is the performance of tony jaffa jeffries. He's got a fight on saturday and has a genuine chance of medalling.
he's a light heavyweight from sunderland with good evasion skills and a rapier like jab with a fierce straight right.

I interviewed him for a piece and he did nothing but help. it's a good story, i'll link it when i can be arsed.

but other than that, come on jaffa arr kid.

OK personal disclaimer about the opening ceremony, I'm at work, the sound was down I only saw a couple of minutes at a time.  Made it pretty hard to get into.

I'm not sure how the olympics today compared to olympics then. I guess different events and less countries. Plus we'd clearly have an advantage on development compared to a lot of nations.

But in terms of modern olympics 2004 was pretty successful.

My point was more that the idea of some PC conspiracy to prevent children being good at sports is silly when we did relatively well last time.

Title: Re: The Unofficial Olympic thread
Post by: janaage on Friday, August 8, 2008, 14:56:00
Agree with there's no conspiracy fella, it was a genuine question.  I wondered how many medals were up for grabs, what was the percentage haul like in comparison, that's all.

Title: Re: The Unofficial Olympic thread
Post by: flammableBen on Friday, August 8, 2008, 15:00:46
Dunno. Might do a bit of research later. Would be quite interesting to see. I'd presume we'd do quite well back pre-2nd world war. Although I'm no Olympic Historian.

In terms of recent gold medals, our 9 in 2004 and 11 in 2002 compare quite well to the 5 each we got in '80, '84, '88 and '92. Although I agree that in terms of media coverage, fuck loads of medals for stuff like boating in bike riding aren't that exciting.

Title: Re: The Unofficial Olympic thread
Post by: flammableBen on Friday, August 8, 2008, 15:09:25
In terms of 1924 vs. 2004 olympics.

In 1924 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1924_Summer_Olympics) we won 9 golds, 13 silvers and 12 bronzes out of 126 events over 17 sports.
We came 4th out of 44 nations.

In 2004 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004_Summer_Olympics) we won 9 golds, 9 silvers and 12 bronzes out of 301 events over 28 sports.
We came 10th out of 202 nations.

Dunno how it compares to further back. I suppose with less events to win medals in but with less nations to compete against it's a pretty different competition, make of the comparison what you will.  For some proper statistical analysis I suppose you'd have to take into account nations challenging for medals in sports and stuff. Bit complex for something of a passing interest.

looks like i got this completely wrong regarding the medals then.my perception as a kid was different to now it seems.but i still think we, as one of the most rich, powerful and highly populated countries should do better.
we have a lack of olympic sized swimming pools, tennis costs loads, and is for the rich kids only to a decent level, same with gymnastics, the taking part is more important than winning races, etc, etc.
we could produce many more medallists if more stuff was available to more children imo.

We get more medals per population than the USA do, or at least we did at the last Olympics. I think facilities have improved a lot in recent years and of course they have needed to.

I have a rule about what constitutes a proper sport:

'It must not contain any judgment by one or more individuals that is not a boolean decision"

I can't think of a decent example that makes this invalid.

Have you bugged our office?

I was just talking about how the subjectively marked sports should be downgraded to demonstration hobbies. It's not that some of them aren't impressive, but I am sure that reputations can guide a score up or down.

I am watching this now. I will be watching a lot of it over the course of the event. Currently it is women's weightlifting, and there is a camera imbedded into the lifting platform that looks directly at the lifter's face as she is lifting. Watched a fair bit of this this morning, the 4 man rowing was class, made up for the 2 men bronze winners, that were meant to be dead certs for gold.  Special mention to the 2 women who won bronze against the odds, one was involved in a hit and run accident late last year and the other had a bad bout of glandular fever.  They weren't expected to win anything so glad they got a medal, another couple of strokes and they'd have won gold!

I find the pursuit very relaxing for some reason. Maybe it's because we are good at it. There was an interesting article on the Times website the other day (which I can't find at the moment but will look for it) which goes into some detail on the cycling program which basically invests in excellence: The performances are all about times, and if they hit their targets they know they will get medals. I think we also benefit from the cycling facilities built for the Manchester Commonwealth games.

Interesting to note that we finished 10th in the 2004 medal table with 9G, 9S and 12B. We already have 11G this time around.

Poor Paula  :(

We are up to 3rd in the medal table now.

What thing with the bike and the moped is that?

The moped goes around the track gradualy picking up speed, no riders are allowed to over take it, but they can try and gain a better position on each other. Once the moped hits a spead of 50kph its goes off the track and the race starts.

I've got into this a bit more over the last few days (I suppose the golds help) fair play to our rowers and cyclists, some cracking displays and some disappointing ones too.  Great to see the all british final between the women earlier!!  3rd in the medals table at this stage is brilliant!!!

I believe Sky are going to be picking up on cycling, presumably showing some indoor stuff as well as out, and there's talk of them having a Brit team in Le Tour as well.

SBC should build a velodrome at the redeveloped CG.

Cycling does seem to be a forté of GB.  Glad to hear Sky getting involved and a GB le tour team would generate a lot of interest.

I was watching the bbc coverage this morning and they started interviewing the fitness coach of the gb team, thought I recognise him, turns out to be Daniel Hunt, a Caln-ite, who I went to primary school with.  Great to see him do well for himself!!

Easy way to solve that is to remove all the sports for which the Olympics is not the pinnicle.  So no football, for example.  They should also remove all events that are decided by judges (Axs made a point about Bolean (sp?) in another thread).

I still think drugs should be allowed, would be great to see how fast a human could run on steroids, or maybe have the same events like 100m, but 100m on heroin, then 100m on grass, a cocaine fuelled 100m, that sort of thing.

Imagine a high jump where all the competitors have taken LSD.

i haven't a clue, so i'm not going to bother speculating. i think it's fairly safe to say she's clean now and won without any illegal substances.

listening to 5live earlier, darren campbell (i think) explained the reason behind her missing the tests - she had to train somewhere other than her usual track. sounds like a rather pathetic excuse but frankly i don't care that much...

The OoC testing regime is a bit different to what happened to Rio. He had an appointment for a test after the game which he knew about, as did his club, and somehow he managed to wlak out of the ground without reporting for it.

The OoC regime means that an athlete can tested without advance declaration, and to enable that they have to provide a diary of their dsy to day movements each week. They then have to make sure that they keep that diary updated so that if there are changes to their plans the testing authorities know about it.

What Ohuruogu failed to do was update the diary. As a result the testers kept turning up at various locations to test her to find that she wasn't there because her plans had changed.

Pretty fucking sloppy, but hardly unique, there were dozens of athletes that had missed 2 tests at the time of her ban. She was made an example of and a whole load of other athletes suddenly got a lot more efficient with their diary keeping.

I don't think there was a single suggestion that she might have actually been using any performance enhancing substances.

It's in Wigan, which must be a suburb in Beijing. Probably.

My other dog is a landowner. I kicked him in the balls and now he has two achers.

I see that Jacques Rogge is now having a pop at Usain Bolt;

Deluded Jacques Rogge fails to see the champion in Usain Bolt

Blind fury: Rogge’s views are stuck in the past

If you want to know just how out of touch the IOC is then listen to Jacques Rogge, a deluded individual who is the organisation's president. Commenting on Usain Bolt, the man who is single-handedly dragging athletics' reputation from the gutter back into the mainstream, Rogge was a tad miffed that he had not taken a break from redefining the parameters of physical endeavour to shake hands with his rivals.

"That's not the way we perceive being a champion," Rogge said. "I have no problem with him doing a show but I think he should show more respect for his competitors and shake hands, give a tap on the shoulder to the other ones immediately after the finish and not make gestures like the one he made in the 100 meters."

Which goes to show how little Rogge knows about sport. He might be good at garden parties and probably has impeccable table manners, but he is a lone voice of dissent. Sport is a show and Bolt has become P.T. Barnum. His celebration as he crossed the line in the 100 metres was an indelible Olympic image. For Rogge it lacked the stiff upper lip he would have preferred.

"The way it was perceived was 'catch me if you can'," Rogge continued. "You don't do that. But he'll learn. He's still a young man." Rogge is an old man but will never learn. People love a winner with character and Bolt has it. He danced, he made his signature lightning gesture and he waved his gold shoes around. These have been his Games. Rogge's attitude sums up a myopic approach to sport. He wants it played by some draconian code of ethics instead of enjoying the beautiful drama and mind-boggling entertainment of the moment.

Bolt runs away with his second gold
A gifted few have claimed the sprint double of 100m and 200m, but never has anyone done so in two world record

He is also wrong. Bolt is both a generous and magnanimous individual. He is utterly deferent to his coach, Glen Mills, respects his elders and said last night that he had just changed the sport a bit, whereas Michael Johnson had revolutionised it. After another brilliant run here, he stopped in the mixed zone to speak specifically to the British media about Germaine Mason, the high jumper who was born in Kingston, Jamaica, but was draped in a Union Jack after winning a surprise silver medal.

You could draw up a list of things wrong with the Olympics as long as the 10,000 metres. It is a corporate carve-up where Visa is king. There have been several books devoted to corruption within the ranks. And then Bolt comes along with his harpsichord grin, laidback manner and god-given talent. In many way, he is the man who saved the Games, but Rogge is more concerned that he stops when crossing the line at breakneck speed and then waits for his rivals to finish before shaking hands and saying, "Well done, old chap."

Sprinting, the boxing of track and field, has been dominated by a timeline of braggarts and egos. Even here one Briton, Tyrone Edgar, was introduced to the crowd before his race and nodded his head, indulging in the whole "I'm the man" tosh. He wasn't. Bolt is.

With his dancing, his talk of nuggets and his wonderfully lackadaisical manner, Bolt is the best thing that has happened to the Games in decades. All the suspicion and finger-pointing that has plagued the Games have been forgotten, however briefly that may last.

"Flash, Flash, I love you, but we only have 14 hours to save the earth," Dale Arden said in the film Flash Gordon. Bolt says he is not Flash Gordon and, indeed, it has only taken him 9.69sec to save his sport.

Rogge is too consumed by his own importance and a deeply simplistic view of sport to realise all this. As for Bolt, he must feel like shaking his head rather than hands.

How can you get excited about an Englishman getting a gold?

Had to laugh when among all this GB excitement, the Hampden crowd were booing the Ulstermen singing Rule Britannia in the week.....think it shows what they think of the UK.

Reg you don't know me at all, so don't try and judge me fella.

As for the hampden crowd booing rule brittania yes I suppose that does show you what elements of the hampden crowd think of the UK.  Doesn't for one minute tell you what a large number of individuals think about the UK does it?  Including myself who wasn't even there, talk about guilty by association!!

I think it's time people seperated football/sporting views from politics, the two do not go hand in hand in my opinion, at a football match I'll be as anti-oxford, as anti-england as I like, but on a personal basis I could careless what nationality or what football team you support.

I await the "fishin" smiley with baited (sic) breath.

Will you support a GB football team in the London Games?  Assuming the Union is still intact.

Title: Re: The Unofficial Olympic thread
Post by: janaage on Friday, August 22, 2008, 10:29:47
No Reg I won't as I don't agree with endangering the status of the 4 "home nation" football associations.  I'm fiercely proud of Scotland's football team and history and would hate a anti-British person like Blatter be given an ammo, in trying to make us compete as GB in fifa competitions.

I also like the fact that football does not over shadow the Olympics at this time, the Olympics is all about the minority sports, and athletics hogging the limelight for a couple of weeks every four years.

Having said that if GB has to have a team, under pressure from the Olympic movement, I would hope that the 4 associations would organise a play off between the U-21 (not u-23, do it for the future) between Scotland, Wales, NI and england to see which u-21 team gets to represent GB I think I wouldn't be so put out about that.

Wasn't being funny Reg, just that on here if someone just asks a question or makes a statment and someone replies all it leads to is some fishin thing.

No matter how much I don't ever support england, I cannot change (and nor would I want to) the fact that my mum (and her family) is english and so I'm not the anti-english person that some are led to believe.

Come on fellas don't be naïve (sp), if at anytime Rule Brittania is sung in Glasgow it's always going to be booed by a good 40/50% of the population.  The Ulstermen knew what they were doing singing that, and it got the reaction it deserved.

If during the Ryder Cup England played Germany I'm sure the wembley crowd would do anything but respect the german national anthem.

On a side note I'm sure I read somewhere that Rule Brittania was written as a bit of a piss take back in ye olden days, not sure how true that is though.

lost 10-3 or something.

couldnt handle the southpaw, seemed to completely forget his jab and appeared to be quite content to walk on to shots.

The combination of young ladies showing off their suppleness and rhythmic abilities whilst juggling with things is ace.

Jamaica Jamaica!

Another world record for Usain, but the glory leg went to Asafa this time.

It would have been nice to have seen them taking on the US and GB in the final,
but that wasn't to be,this time.

Yep. Looked like we were cheated good and proper. If it was against anyone else but China I'd give the judges the benefit.

It looks as if the London 2012 part of the closing ceremony could be interesting;

Leona Lewis singing Led Zeps 'Whole Lotta Love'. It's a rock classic and she's

a pop star in her own right, with her own songs, for fecks sake.

What a shame that our country has to be represented by a winner of a flippin reality show, Leon Lewis??  Why could Led Zep do it, or get the stones to represent GB, the Proclaimers maybe.  World famous musicians not some woman who's only meaning in life is to finanicially improve the life of Simon Cowell.

I wonder who's gonna light the flame in 2012, blind Mikey from big brother, with Davina McCall doing her stupid facial expressions to the camera.  Flipping heck 2012 could either be amazingly good, or embarrassing.

What a shame those bbc commentators couldn't shut up for 5 minutes at the end and just let us enjoy the show China put on, listening to comments such as "New York has the empire state building, Sydney the opera house and now Beijing has the bird's nest" weren't really needed, think it would have been amazing just to hear the music, watch the fireworks and then they could have passed comments after.
