Title: Scary Grounds to get in and out of
Post by: Topcat on Saturday, March 16, 2013, 14:59:56
I think the old Den and the New Den are vey intimidating grounds to get in & and out of as their full of high rise flats and little industrial units with lots of hiding places

A few years back Maine Road, Ninian Park.

The Old Den, massively top of any list.

Other nasty ones are/were the M*nor ground, Ninian Park, Priestfield, Somerton Park, but thats it off the top of my head.

Old Den agreed...New Den if you go by train there's the special walkway from the station straight into the away end, not really that intimidating as a result.

Maine Road was always something 'special'

Definitely agree about the old Den, we once parked about a mile from the ground and the police said that probably wasn't far enough. The Aldershot park behind the away end has seen some action, Although it was fine last season when we went down there. Walking back to Temple meads was different " Your going in the river " was a favoured chant from the shite heads. Wouldn't be suprised if some visiting fans find getting back to the station at our place intimidating especially with all the Allyways around the Manchester road area.

Yeah ours must be quite intimidating particularly having to walk past the tap and the CGH, and the home end.

I find those slightly intimidating, even when I'm in a town shirt!

I remember seeing Man utd down at Ashton Gate and they ran city all over the place and there wer stories of fans going into the river
Aldershot away is a strange setting having to walk through a park to get to the shared away end which reminds me of a barn

You mention a good point regarding away fans finding swindon intimidating as I had never looked at it like that but thinking about walking down manchester road and all of thise side streets & alley ways then when approaching the stadium you are met with the county ground hotel and the back of the town end with swindon fans everywhere it must make them weary of us

I'm not worried by them, I don't expect to get mugged or anything, it's just the ambience of the area that is slightly intimidating, and would be doubly so if you were an away fan.

Your right, knowing the area getting to and from grounds is a big help even when it's an away ground you have been to before.

Kassam.

They all stand there looking at you and doing some sort of tribal dance raising their middle fingers.

All an hour after the game.

Most bizarre.

Swindon fans waiting on the green by the town end/shrivenham road stands must have been scary for away fans in the 80's as they had to pass to get to their coaches etc

I've been worried four times. West ham and wolves away. City and the pox at home. Wouldn't have ever been worried coming here if not looking for it as a visitor. Seen our lot on their toes more than the other way.

iirc they used to park the coaches on Shrivy road in the early 80s,would have been more or less where Ocotal way is now.

Seen some right scary mobs here including swindon fans going crazy against pox, both bristols, gillingham, brighton, pompey, southampton, blackburn, cardiff and many more so im guessing all clubs have their idiots its just a case of staying out of their way and keping quiet.

Bristol City away walking from temple meads was always very scary even when I watched Man Utd down there

I think there was cross over in the early 80's as I can remember the coaches parked in shrivy road where town fans used wait in the alley behind the cycle shop then they started to park them behind the town end

Must have missed town fans running others all over the place since watching the town for 30 years despite knowing so called lads. A van full hartlepool took the piss infront of my very eyes outside the packed cgh.
The odd scrap then yes but not mob running. Seen our lot run plenty of times though.

Ive been going for over 30 years and seen lots of swindon mobs getting the better of both bristols, southapton, oxford, brighton, pompey, blackburn, gillingham, reading and more, By a mob I mean a few hundred and all without rose tinted glasses and all in the 1980's. Not all the time but often enough to say that they were a force

Fair point I think we know some of them. Football is def better off without them but in those days it was hard not to see them whilst getting to and from the grounds. Also in those days it was the done thing for away fans to mingle in wih the home fans and try and take the home end

I would struggle to name a good football hooligan to be honest ,but give me the hardest in the local  pubs  in swindon in the  late 80's and 90's and very few were even into football

Edit: but then im younger than some , i have heard some naughty stories . Just dont know any real hooli's ( who aint twats)

in my experience i would have to agree with Arriba on this. think in the past we were more sinned against.have seen villa cardiff, bristol city, pompey, millwall, brighton, qpr, birmingham, and yes... oxford in the town end pre- segregation. never saw the reverse at these grounds. havent been everywhere but can only remember swindon in aldershots end. may be wrong.

report from Nuneaton  police: " We were expecting anything from 2 to 277 Lincoln fans today and obviously being prepared for trouble ( due to historical differences ) , we cannot legislate fans fighting outside our jurisdiction and that's why we couldnt prevent the manslaughter of Nunny the tortoise ( the mascot ) who was chased until dead  "

city away was that the season they went down as I heard many stories of that game and some real big lads having to take cover. Slightly unfair against city as they have so many but then bristol is a big city
I can rememnber swindon giving blackburn the run around after a cup game in the 8o's and bristol rovers on a tuesday evening and we had oxfors on the run the nigh that there was a big fire down by the railway station

Anybody remember playing Blackburn in the FA Cup in 1984 when we got beat 2-1 with Jimmy Quinn scoring for the visitors as it got really lively after the game!!

Yep, remember it well. Rovers were on the receiving end of some pretty heavy Swindon hospitality. They came looking for it and got more than they bargained for.

Nice to know others knew about it

Bournemouth at home was a great game nice and sunny day and town had a real mob at the bank and remember the police escorting a couple of hundred lads back to the town end but that seemed to make litle difference as there were hundreds still massed against the bournemouth fans. Never a 14,300 crowd though more like 20,000+ must have been fiddling the books

I totally agree having been to many games in that period it obviously is interesting to us older fans and how scary it was at times to follow your team away from home knowing that the home fans were waiting to kick your head in after the game.

I totally agree having been to many games in that period it obviously is interesting to us older fans and how scary it was at times to follow your team away from home knowing that the home fans were waiting to kick your head in after the game.
I'm 48.

Thanks,
I can remember going to Nothampton in 86 when we won 1-0 and bricking myself as lots of Northampton fans came out of an alley way and attacked a Z Hire van full of town fans.Luckily they were able to drive off as they were trying to force the back doors open
Scary or what
was at this one, town fan got stabbed before the game, after the game it went mental cars being rolled, fighting all over, the police did'nt have a clue

And I don't know what common room banter means either.

I do find the reminiscing interesting, just find it funny to take the piss a little (even if pre-emptively) in case anyone tries to get all 'hard man'.

Bogus Dave, my favourite thing about that scene (other than the rest of it of course) is he doesn't put the handbrake on at the start. Genius.

And what the hell is common room banter.

Yeah I remember and that was the mob we accidently came across before the game, also remember that two swindon double deckers had to be escorted back to oxford and that there was alot of history between the clubs with swindon smashing their pub up a season or two earlier

Going back to the 70s we ambushed Cardiff down by the bus station, used to be a couple of giant advertising hoardings down there and about 100 of us ran them all the way to the train station. Millmoor was a horrible ground to go and get away from all the little alley ways and that was the days when the home fans were allowed into the away end, first time there i saw all these lads with red and white scarfs on and thought to myself what a great turn out, eh eh ....wrong all riotherham fans  with just a small bunch of town fans in the far corner with a couple of coppers between us, how i escaped without a kicking that day, as i know of at least 1 town fan spent a few days in hospital there. :D

Anything that isn't glorifying football hooliganism, apparently.

Donkey jackets, combat trousers, doc martin boots, scarfes around the wrist, home made banners made from sheets to wrap around shoulders, ring any bells?
Then came the skinhead era ,scary!!!

It was very scary back then in the 70's and 80's. I recall all of these games, Northampton, Pompey, Millwall etc.
Saying that Swindon was not a scary place to visit I would disagree. I know for a fact that Millwall and Pompey two of the worst clubs for nutcases following their clubs loved coming to Swindon as they would always be guaranteed some action.
I also recall when a Plymouth fans was killed at Swindon.

So glad I can take both my young lads without the hassle that went on those decades before. I even took my 9 year old to the Pox JPT game without any problem.

How ironic that the only time I was ever actually hit at a football game were by Swindon skinheads along the Manchester Road after an Oxford game as I made my way back to the station.....bastards.

Bastard Town Fans, me too.

In my case leaving the Fulham (Best, Moore and Marsh etc) v Town FA Cup third round 3-3 at Craven Cottage

Someone from behind nicked my Fulham-ish navy and white bobble hat, I turned round demanding it back and took a few hits and kicks with my mate

We left it at that (wisely in my case) teacup, paperbag and all that

I was at that game too. It's one of only 2 games I've ever really been scared at a football match - the other one was a home game against Millwall, in the early 80s. Not that anything much happened against Millwall as I recall - I was just a young boy and scared because of their reputation.

Didn't go to the away game, but was at the replay at the CG, wasn't it 5-1! Your story of the bobble hat was pretty much the same as what happened to me at Higbury ( the Billy Tucker equaliser game ) except I was with my brother in law ( a huge bloke ) so when he growled at them they gave it back very quickly. Think there was quite a lot of trouble that night in and around our end. Highbury was a strange ground, terraced houses with gaps here and there where the turn styles were.
