Nice one Suggs, if we win this I might very well get your username tattooed on my arse.

Tight game, either we'll sneak a 1-0 win or it will be 1-1.

Season defining game....always a difficult place to go, a positive result and it's onwards and upwards, a loss, and we're back to square one.

Have we enough collective mental strength?  Will di Canio see fire in the eyes, or glazed, blood shot vagueness?

Strange that Gabilondo and Magera start having not featured at all in recent weeks?  With Jervis and Magera up front, it could well be long ball tactics?

Can't see us getting more than a point at best and think we may concede today.

If I'm proved wrong, I'm with Reg on it possibly being a defining point.  We could also do with those above dropping points.

I'd say with Gabilondo instead of De Vita, it'll be get the ball out wide and get crosses in the box.

Good to hear Simon Cox gets a start today for West Brom. Is it his first Premier league start?

Maybe, but it's always easier in hindsight.

The good thing is that Paolo isn't afraid to change the team if it needs changing.

Most people have praised De Vita's contribution on the left, (although not so much against Gillingham and certainly not against Bradford).

Paolo obviously thought the same & has replaced him with Gabilono. What with that & Magera's contribution so far he's looking like a genius at the moment.

I think De Vita's been an extremely underrated part of our success this year, and I can see why he's been in the team ahead of Gabilondo, but if nothing else Gabby is an impact player and surely you should have that sort of player on the bench?

De Vita lost it after Di Canio praised him after the Plymouth goal. Started trying to come infield all the time.

From the South stand I was shouting at him to use the space on the touchline last week, so not exactly hindsight.

He did have a purple patch for a few weeks I have to admit. Even started winning headers.

I meant it was easy to make the decision to drop him after the two games last week.
It would have been a much more difficult call to do so after the Plymouth game.

Remember Micky Adams spouting bollocks doubting Di Canio and all those 'foreign players' at the start of the season?

Adams (below) said: “It’s his first job and I think everybody in football knows how important it is to get off to a good start when you begin as a manager.

“Don’t get me wrong. He has a wealth of experience and I’m sure can get over what he wants.

“But the first club you are in charge of can either make you or break you.

“Since he arrived, Swindon have had quite a turnover of players, including a number of foreign boys. It will be interesting to see how they settle.

“His reputation will help him at first, but players can work you out very quickly.

“They soon decide if you talk a good game, or if you really can impart your knowledge and develop a pattern of play.

“The one thing he will find is that this division is relentless.

“In the first few months when you are playing twice a week, with no time for recovery, it can be a real test. A lot of the foreign players will find that alien, and it will be an eye opener for him.”

"But he's managing in League Two – if he doesn't want to see physical 'in-your-face football' he should go back to Cloud Cuckoo Land where people wear tutus and dance around each other.

"At this level it's about working hard and putting plenty of challenges in.

Back from the game, as routine an away win as I've seen for a while. Controlled the game from start to finish, Vale had a few half chances but we were so comfortable.  Few player performance thoughts:

Gabilondo - Absolutely superb in the 1st half, the pitch was very wide and this played into his hands as he had a lot of room to terrorise the right back. Key part in Magera's goal and was our main attacking force.  Faded out a bit in the second half.

Magera - slow start but as soon as he scored he grew in confidence and was excellent for the rest of the game showing all the attributes you want from a target man. The class started to shine through.

Flint - another towering performance, won everything in the air and was there to get us out of a couple of potential dodgy defensive moments

Jervis - fucking dreadful, dying on his feet by half time. Saw on twitter he said he had the flu so that would explain the performance

Big Wes - I can't remember the last time I had so much confidence in a Town keeper. As per recent games he did everything asked of him.

Ridenhaugh - didn't put a foot wrong at back and seemed to have a very good understanding with Gabby going forward. Here's hoping the new Huddersfield manager doesn't want him.

We did what we had to do today. We matched them physically, closed them down very quickly, which stopped them playing and severely limited their chances, whilst we took our chance and the penalty with clinical style.

All the ingredients needed to get out of this division were on display today. Fucking good win against a side who could easily have kicked our arse if we'd let them play.

Wes in goal was confidence personified. Very big steadying influence at the back.

Flint immense as usual. Ditto that for McComack, Caddis and Ridehalgh

Smith got through a lot of work even if some of his passes were wayward.

Ferry his usual busy self and made some good, perceptive passes that caused havock at times.

Gabilondo a real threat, but faded due to the sheer amount of work he got through. Tore them apart for Magera's goal.

Ritchie was mediocre by his high standards. Didn't shine, but contributed well enough.

Jervis was lightweight. Not his fault if was ill though.

Magera took his goal well. Always neat and tidy for such a tall player. Will deffo be a big threat if he can keep his confidence levels up. His two-fisted gesture to the fans showed what it meant to him to get on the score sheet today. Looked like he'd finally shaken the monkey off his back and played like it for the rest of the match.

Still early days, but the signs are all there that this side are capable of causing problems for anyone.

For me though, the defence is now so solid and confident with Wes between the sticks. Gotta sign him or someone like him in January if we're going to be in the mix - or above - come May 2012.

Weird one today. Port Vale looked like they could play all night and not score - they had chances but Big Wes was in the right place at the right time. Gabilondo and Magera came in and played well, thought Caddis and Ferry were very good (as per), Flint and McCormack were composed and in control against Marc Richards.

Jervis didn't have the best half but I despair of those who booed him. Ridiculous. Kerrouche was awesome :) .

Can't see why Palace would want to end Foderingham's loan when its going so well. Chances are that they'll extend his deal with them in January and with us to the end of the year.

I've little doubt Montano is a skillful player, but let's send him back and get Bodin back. Both cover the left and can play up top.

I believe Foderingham is out of contract in the summer, so come January it is definitely worth chucking some money towards Palace and seeing what they say...

Bodin isn't good enough to get in our squad - yet. Not sure he ever will be, but if he's going to improve as a player and have half a chance of making it in the game, he's better off doing it out on loan as the expectation levels here are too great and our cuntish element will just ruin him.

He's never played for us with the confidence to know he can create and score goals in league football though. We hadn't got going when he was in the side this season - so can we really judge? The best guide is what he's doing now.

Sadly this isn't good news for us.

Still no reason we couldn't extend the loan for the rest of the season though.

As long as Julian Speroni and Lewis Price are at Selhurst Park then we will make the most of Wes Foderingham.

He's out of contract at Palace this summer isn't he?

Can only go on what I've seen of him. He has ability, no doubt. He's not in the same league as Keroosh, Connell, Magera, Gabilondo etc though.

Granted, he's scoring goals at the moment, and good on him. Elliot Benyon scored goals in the same place as well though.

I wouldn't swap any of our current players for either of them. Would you?

For Montano, yes. See exactly where you're coming from but the loan was put in place to develop him. Let's get the new improved version before we write him off...

Just saw the goals on the FLS. Nice finish from Magera! Looked like a fair enough penalty decision, and neatly tucked away by the flaming Algerian.

very solid away performance.

caddis' defensive positioning/marking in the 1st half was all over the shop, but in the second half vale didn't look create anything dangerous despite having lots of the ball

gabi had two or three superb runs in the first half, and worked very hard in the second. we really could have done with him against bradford last week to open the game up. behind him, ridehalgh is an excellent defender and they were never a threat down that side of the pitch

good to go into a couple of cup games with a well deserved league win in the bag

I have also just seen the goals on BBC FLS iplayer. Nice play by Gabilondo, who I have always thought should have more opportunities and agree with a previous poster that he could well have unlocked the Bradford defence. Nice finish by Magera also. Cool calm and collected penalty by The rrrrrrrroooooooooosssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhh.

Embarrassingly have a look at Timlin's miss for Southend V the Scum on 58.49 mins of the show. Cupid stunt, I bet he got some stick for that.

That was amazing. one on one with the keeper and it ends up going out for a throw in  ???

He did play a nice through ball for their winner though in fairness.

I believe that as he's been signed as an 'emergency loan', the maximum he can be loaned for is 3 months. It's interesting that Palace are letting him play in the FA Cup next week, meaning he'll be cup tied, so they might be open to offers.

Jordan was bought out last year. They're not exactly flush, but not in danger of going under as they almost did before the buy out.

Just thought I'd add my comments about yesterday's game.  Prior to the game I had concerns that Port Vale, having lost a few recently, would offer a physical threat & prevent us from playing our game. Whilst we didn't show the fluency that I saw at Burton, Cheltenham or Macclesfield we were the better side. Gabilondo was a constant thorn in their right side & they never looked at ease against his pace or trickery.  His shot early in the first half deserved a goal & brought an impressive save from the Vale goalie. At last we saw what I was hoping for from Magera - a physical presence to supplement his subtle flicks & lay-offs & he deserved his goal. He also won us the penalty & Vale didn't ever look certain against him. Ritchie & Smith didn't have their best games but were competitive as ever.  Smith's distribution was somewhat haphazard but he broke up Vale's midfield passing & never let them gain the ascendancy. Ferry played well without being outstanding & was always available to take a pass or hustle the opposition into either making a mistake or pass back to defenders.  The result was that Vale never really got a grip on the game to threaten the Town goal with any real prospect of scoring.  Foderingham did everything that was asked of him & looked very assured.  I reckon he must be thinking that League 2 Football is a breeze playing behind this defence.  Flint was dominant & Caddis & Ridehalgh were solid in defence & able to get forward to add a threat down the flanks. However I was yet again impressed with McCormack.  His reading of the game is top notch & his play is another reason why our defence is proving solid. He showed some crucial tackles, timely interceptions & then played some good passes out of defence to initiate further attacking moves. His move back into defence has been highly significant & he looks like he was borne to it - I'm reminded of the time when Cloughie made Dave Mackay's switch from midfield to defence.  I may be over-egging the pudding but he could be that influential to our season. All in all, a very satisfying day out in Staffordshire.

Finally, a word about my fellow Town fans - your support was magnificent.  Well done.

Nice report, Prof.

Even though the parallel drawn between Dave MacK*nt and Alan McCormack is astute, talking about that useless tub of lard as a decent defender for those who frequented the County rather than the Baseball still grates.

MacK*nt 's comic rating of his importance as a player ahead of Stan Harland was the beginning of the end of the golden generation.

Being a canny Scot, he saw what he was doing, sold Rogers and jumped ship a few days later to ensconce himself where he could take credit for the great Clough's work.

I hope Alan McCormack stays around and develops as a defender because he's becoming a great 6.

Hey, Red Rag - I share your views of the legend that was Mackay.  Frankly, he was a disaster at Swindon what with breaking up that great team.  Getting rid of the 'Don' was an act of sacrilegious vandalism.

However I do think that McCormack is doing a great job in defence & I hope he continues to influence the development the relatively inexperienced Flint & Ridehalgh for the benefit of Swindon Town.

Fair play to you too for being one of the 500-600
.
I need to "get over it" when it comes to MacKay.  I quite like to keep the flame going though - not the only one to judge by the John McGinlay posts.

Alan McCormack's transformation from an unpretentious, tough tackling midfielder into a key central defender has been inspirational (or lucky given that PDC had to take some gamble due to injuries/supension).

Good tackling takes judgement, timing and a little attitude and he has brought that to defence.  I was really concerned about the aerial nature of defending at first but he is good at general defensive headers.  Not yet sure about one on one defence against big strikers but even if he's no Flint, just being in the right place to challenge can be a whole lot better than the alternative.

Glad to hear these good performances continue and yes you may be right as to his importance to developing others and the campaign as we wouldn't have come away with so many points lately had we been conceding as earlier

I saw Gary Rose tweet something about a change due to injury, assumed it was De Vita, but it may not have been.

Ahmed Abdulla picked up an injury so that rulled him out of making the bench.

As for De Vita, I just thought Gabilondo was preferred due to the wide width of the Vale Park pitch. To be honest De Vita could do with a rest given the amount of play this season...
