You've got to love this season, but I'll still take it each game as it comes, tempting as it is to get ahead of oneself and dream.

When I was a kid, I always knew we would one day reach the top flight....never doubted it for a moment, after all we're Swindon Town, by far the greatest team the world has ever seen...even prob 25 odd years later, when we were seemingly stuck in Div 4, playing in front of sub 3000 crowds, I knew it.

And lo, it came to pass.

Dream fulfilled, I suppose I grew up and started seeing it as it really is, as we stumbled back to Div 4....
I know its been posted many times but we are (were) apparently the 5th most stressful club to support.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-426715/Revealed-The-10-worst-football-clubs-follow.html

That was in 2007, since then we have one Wembley play off final defeat, two play off defeats, one relegation, one championship and one JPT final defeat.

Well since that was created, Darlo, have well and truly cracked up and Franchise don't count.

Getting relegated to Div 4, under the Fitton/Black regime really took the biscuit.

Agree with a lot of your post, but not with the part in bold.  I would not say that we have had more than our fair share of massive highs at all during the last 15 to 20 years.  We have enjoyed some good results recently and some enjoyable cup runs under PDC.  But nothing that equates with anything that fans of Swansea, Reading or even Fleetwood have had to cheer about.

The only promotions we have had during this period have both been immediate returns to Division Three, a division we should never have been relegated from in the first place (on either occasion).  I've said it before, but we are still waiting for the elusive shot in the arm that promotion to the Championship would provide, or a substantial ground redevelopment.  Either of these would be transformational.  As things stand, we are a lower league stalwart that has had little of any great significance to cheer about for over 2 decades - and that, in the circumstances, is doing very well indeed to attract the crowds that it is doing.
I suppose 'Massive highs' was not the right phrase to use (that was really referring to the Hoddle/Ardiles/Macari era which of course is 20+ years now) but we certainly have had more than our fair share of ups and downs in more recent times...

95-96 - Win Div 3 - Promotion
99-00 - Relegation
03-04 - Play offs - lose to Brighton
05-06 - Relegation to Div 4
06-07 - Promotion back to Div 3
09-10 - Beaten Play off finalists
10-11 - Finish bottom - Relegation
11-12 - Div 4 Champions
12-13 - Play offs - lose to Brentford

And that's without all the off field dramas. So no 'massive highs' I agree but plenty of highs followed closely with a good mix of lows. Enough to make some a bit jaded or cynical, which was my point really.

I was just working out how many "events" I had since supporting the Town in 74 chronologically....

LC semi final
Championship with most point ever (at the time)
Promotion via play off
FRT semi final
Simod semi final
Play off semi final
Wembley play off winners
Demotion from Div 1 to Div 3 and reinstating to Div 2
Wembley play off winners
Relegation from Premier League with record goals against and least wins (at the time)
LC semi final
Relegation
Championship
Relegation
Administration
LDV semi final
Administration
Play off semi final
LDV Semi final
Relegation
Promotion
Wembley play off final
Relegation
Wembley JPT final
Championship
Play off semi final
JPT southern final

Add in a couple of other "near misses" with administration in recent years.

Thats a lot of ups and downs in the last 40 years.

You've forgotten 78/79....an STFC cracker.....end of season we have some games in hand, due to previous postponements, and a very decent team.

First game away at Brentford...take about 3000 on a Tuesday night win 2-1, which leaves us, in final auto spot in 3rd, a point behind Watford and Swansea with a game in hand. Both Watford and Swansea have played 45, with us on 44. Win and  a draw at mid table Wendies and Blackpool guarantees auto, no matter what anyone else does....we lose them both  Sad

Looks like we may be winning the race for this unnamed non league striker according to Cooper

And the Danny Invincible goal that kept us up, loads of great and awful moments.

Top scorers in the Conference as follows*...

1   John Akinde   Barnet   21
2   Scott Rendell   Woking   14
3   Lenell John-Lewis   Grimsby Town   12
4   Harry Beautyman   Welling United   11
5   Louis Moult   Wrexham   11
6   Stefan Payne   Dover Athletic   11
7   Damien Reeves   Altrincham   11

Conference North

1   Omar Bogle   Solihull Moors   13
2   Adam Boyes   Guiseley   12
3   Dayle Southwell   Boston United   9
4   Adi Yussuf   Oxford City   9

Conference South

1   Lee Angol   Boreham Wood   17
2   Justin Bennett   Gosport Borough   11
3   David Pratt   Bath City   10
4   David Tarpey   Maidenhead United   9

The stand outs I suppose are the man with no nose at Barnet and Lee Angol at Boreham Wood.  He could be playing lower down than that of course, like the Wessex League...but we'd never sign anyone from that far down - how could they possibly step up to L1?

*Yes, I'm bored.
