Has shit been upgraded in language terms?  Mid table = average I would have thought.

Last season we had a worse attack, and conceeded close to the same amount.  We had a few more points but lost a couple of the next games.  We were lacking firepower and had a bad habit of conceeding goals (remember those debates about the last 10 mins).  I think it's fair to say we started "ok" but not showing we'd maintain a consistent attack on the very top spots.  I think it's fair to say this season we can't say whether we'll get the impetus to match that run, so there is a fair chance mid table may be the limit if the inconsistency continues.

None of that harks at being "shit", certainly not shit in a way that excludes the option of someone being non plussed by the season so far.
