That McKirdy headline reads bad but when you read the full quote, it isn't nearly. Basically said its a short career, you have to get on with ambitions and he assumed the club would want to cash in also (which was true).

On Payne though, if we were the middle offer and Charlton was the lowest and you're moving for family reasons, surely you'd go with Crawley the highest offer? Its not exactly far.

Sounds like bollocks to me. At least with McKirdy he is honest, even if it comes across harsh.

Where as I read his comments as basically saying

‘I signed for Swindon on the cheap because no one wanted me but the minute I started playing well I knew I was wanted to leave’

I wouldn't be surprised if a good agent suggested that the Crawley offer might be a bit "too good to be true" - wouldn't be the first club to have new ownership pumping money in, sign players on big contracts and then rather struggle to honour them once the financial realities changed. Add that to simply being a much bigger club in a higher division, and I think he pretty clearly made the right choice, as much as we'd like to have retained him.

I mean, he literally said "No one else wanted me, it was lucky Swindon were fucked so I could come here" while he was here on a podcast.

I don't blame him for having ambitions. The money factor, his old contract probably was shit as we couldn't offer much under the embargo but sounds like we didn't try too hard to keep him either.

Yeah size of club and division probably made more of a factor though really. Its just surprising he didn't see that as its usually something fans like to hear.

Alex Henshall -> Melksham

Not taking the piss, he had to take the City chance I suppose. Shame it didn't quite work out. Whether he would have been better staying we'll never know.

This seems to suggest a trend of trial, signing, release at the end of the season? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_Henshall

Cheers H for the link. It's baffling that a player with so much talent and seemingly the right attitude never really made it.

One of the reasons why it's not a good idea going to a massive club at such a young age. Maybe get established in the lower leagues and move on once you've proved yourself like Austin & Twine did. Amongst others Rideout, Horlock & Simpson are other good examples.
