The impression they give on the 'interpretation' side of the rule is ridiculous.  If Henry had raised his hand and walked away he wouldn't have been interferring, but as soon as he ran at goal he was getting involved to me?

Mind you I've seen more contentious ones given, Fifa seem to keep changing the rules at the highest level from what you hear.

they should just whack it back to the old days. if you are in an offside position even on the opposite side of the pitch, you're offside.

Surely then OF, this case could be argued in nearly every case and the offside rule has changed very little from its original state?

A question, not an argument btw....
don't really understand your point mate - what can be argued in nearly every case? interfering?

being offside is a matter of fact - you're either in an offside position or not.

interfering is where subjectivity comes into it.
Yeah, i guess i didn't make that very clear. I was meaning that, you could argue, that any player who is offside is interfering with play indirectly i.e. pulling players away from the attacking player with the ball. Is their anything about this in teh rules?
thats supposed to be the point of the interfering bit.

if henry was down in the opposite corner when the pass was played, fine, no offside. but the reason i would say it was offside is because if henry had not been there, and thus makelele not run forward to play him offside, makkers would have been covering the space where van persie got the ball and scored. i think thats pretty direct involvement.

as it says in the rules, if he's in an offisde position and doing one of these:

1. interfering with play
2. interfering with opposition player
3. gaining an advantage by being in that position

then its a free-kick.

at first I thought it should have counted, but now thinking about it Oxford Fan is right.

The fact Henry was running towards the ball/box/goal means he was part of play. Even if he gets no where near the ball the defence still have to aware of where he is.

If he had his hands up and was walking in the opposite direction then the defenders and officials know he isnt going towards the ball to get involved with play

there is far too much grey area over offside/not offside.

fifa/eufa should use examples to highlight what they mean

i'm sorry thats just not true. its perfectly clear, just because players/fans/pundits don't get it doesn't mean the law is wrong.

There is always going to be human error by the ref/linesman with the offside rule however clearly it's defined, disagreeing with the officials decsisions is part of football though and something which I think makes the game more interesting.

to be honest, if anyone was at fault it was henry.

why one of the worlds best strikers is 5 yards offside in such a position is beyond me. even sunday league strikers know the importance of being onside  :-))(
