We'll take 5 strikers, but won't try any of the sub ones out properly, so when Rooney or Owen are suspended or injured, their replacements will not be confident in filling their shoes, as is Sven's usual friendly tactics.

Squad for 2002 World Cup 1 SEAMAN David (GK) 2 MILLS Danny 3 COLE Ashley - * 4 SINCLAIR Trevor 5 FERDINAND Rio - * 6 CAMPBELL Sol - * 7 BECKHAM David - * 8 SCHOLES Paul 9 FOWLER Robbie 10 OWEN Michael - * 11 HESKEY Emile 12 BROWN Wes 13 MARTYN Nigel (GK) 14 BRIDGE Wayne 15 KEOWN Martin 16 SOUTHGATE Gareth 17 SHERINGHAM Teddy 18 HARGREAVES Owen 19 COLE Joe - * 20 VASSELL Darius 21 BUTT Nicky 22 JAMES David (GK) 23 DYER Kieron That's 3 Goalkeepers, 8 defenders, 7 midfielders, 5 strikers So it seems we may take another striker...and Vassell has the experience of 2002 The starred players are the only ones we're likely to take this time...only 6 players out of 23 with experience... G Neville should have been there but was injured - The attack of the Meta-Tarsels (remember Beckhams foot on the front of the Sun ) Neville, Owen, Beckham, Campbell and Ferdinand survive from the 1998 squad, but Ferdinand was a non-playing squad member at the time.

Carrick is a good shout for the squad NO WAY Crouch tho Bent or Vassell - interesting call to make NO WAY Taylor over Young every time Barry over Thompson tho - maybe u are right there BUT - Chris Sutton is a much more experienced player and I think would be a useful surprise to have on the bench Sutton and no Crouch. :jaw1:

The strikers we should take if fit are: Rooney, Owen, Crouch, Defoe and Bent. Basically exactly the ones we're using now, to be fair to Sven he generally picks a good squad.

I feel Owen, Bent and Defore are all too similair. The small quick type plus Bent, Defoe and Crouch dont have alot of expirence up front. We saw at euro2004 we were a different team without Rooney, he drops off and picks up the ball and he is very intelligent player. The only possible replacement like for like (ish) is Sheringham. Again look what happened at Euro2004 when we lost Rooney.

I think Bent is more like shearer, not as big but fast, good in the air, powerful, not small and nippy like Own and Defoe, an excellent finisher from range also.

They will never gain experience as long as Sven is in charge, they rarely get 90 minutes internationally. I never buy the 'too similar' excuse either. Quality strikers, with quality service will score goals, be it two target men or short arses.

Why was Alan Smith in the squad. He's no longer a striker and has a handful of matches for Man Utd in a new position, yet gets in ahead of Carrick, Parker etc (Although am I right that at least one of these two is injured?). Also Smith's international career hasn't exactly been illustrious, to sya the least, typical big club bias methinks, poor old Danny Murphy has been so much better than Smith. According to teletext Sven is lookig to try Smith in midfield!

I'd take Teddy Sheringham so we've got the obligatory serial shagger who everyone loves
