I'd go old school and play Wright as a Sweeper. Either that, or try him as DM, he has a bit more presence about him, as we did look noticeably physically smaller in the middle against Barnet.

Also, although I respect what you're trying to say;

There's a big difference between being good on the ball when everything is in front of you (like at centre back) and being good on the ball in midfield when your back is to goal and you have 2 players jumping on you. I don't think he'd survive in midfield but who knows!

Wright is a ball playing defender but he isn’t a defending defender.
He should be played right side of the 3 with a proper defending defender controlling & organising the defence from the middle. Delaney would be the best bet.

Same way as Conroy could not defend or lead the defence but could play alongside Baudry.

I still think we've looked better defensively with Mabete in the side. Yes he looks a little bit ropey on the ball but he seems like a defender who can actually defend. Wins a lot of ball in the air and makes us more robust - I'd start him

Yeah, I'm not sure where all of the negativity for Mabete has come from personally. It seems like him getting sent off against Eastleigh has made up a lot of people minds about him before he'd even played a competitive minute. Unlike several others, including experienced pros he's not made any mistakes that have even led to opportunities, let alone goals when he's come on so far. He's not a ball playing defender and has looked a bit nervous but nothing majorly wrong at all.
Even him getting reamed out by Smith for booting the ball out of play last week, I'll take a defender that follows the mantra "when in doubt boot it out" every day over one who tries to turn & play out of defence & promptly give the ball away for a goal.

Wright would be classed as a sweeper like Culverhouse was if teams still played that system

Wright on the right and Wilson-brown on the left being both tasked with long distribution with a CB between them who stays back and can actually win a tackle would work.

I think WB has looked a bit exposed at times but he isnt bad in the air and can pick out a pass.

For me Clarke is not the person to be sat between them though, we need a proper defender who covers properly.

When Clarke plays he sits more in front of the 2 CB's rather than behind them which (to my eyes) is needed more defensively to cover them when they stroll up the pitch, we need a CB who stays back at ALL times. A proper dedicated CB rather than a ball playing CB.

I have a feeling that Mbete could develop into that role but hes too raw at the moment and a bit hot headed, but he will come good.

I saw another amusing comment from one of our fans blaming it on the ref for not blowing his whistle before Smith clattered the keeper. Interesting take….

I get what they must have bee alluding to.

Smith was having his shirt removed by the Barnet player that was tracking back with him. If the ref had blown for the obvious foul, Smith would have wound him up firther down the line and got his second yellow and a short ban as opposed to being out for several months due to being crocked.

I get the reasoning, but it was Smith that decided to wave his foot at the goalie in the hope of distracting him.

If you’re going to be a ball playing defender, the minimum he can do is track his man and at least try to get back to help defend.. Nothing is more infuriating watching an opposition player have 1 man left to beat and if Wright actually moved his fucking legs faster, he might make a difference but it’s like he doesn’t think it’s his job to defend and just casually jogs back. It’s supposed to be a team effort, every body on the line or is the guy just unfit?
