Just got the renewal through and it's £170, but I can't remember the last time I watched any terrestrial Telly. Thinking of cancelling it. Does anyone know what we won't be able to watch IF we cancel the licence? I believe you won't be able to access any BBC channels or anything shown live? What if I cast a live broadcast from my phone to the telly?

Any live tv through any means officially. Even streaming on Netflix if it's live.

So, anything live via broadband, does that include YouTube live streams etc?

This. YouTube is fine if it's not live. They used to be able to get shitty if you even had equipment capable of receiving live TV but no idea now. I think the BBC is great value, and losing it risks all manner of stuff. But I do get the other side of the argument. Anyway, answer no to both these questions and it tells you: https://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/check-if-you-need-one/topics/telling-us-you-dont-need-a-tv-licence

There's a great new-ish comic called Josh Pugh and he has a good tv license joke in the first 1:15 of this show, which you can watch now, without a tv license:

I didn't think you need anything if you say you don't watch anything on BBC including iPlayer. If you're then caught you suffer the consequences. My nephew doesn't pay for it and genuinely doesn't watch or listen to anything BBC. Never been chased or questioned by them.

From a Swindon point of view, if you're watching any of our matches live on nowtv, you'll need a tv licensing.
They were quite enthusiastic at sending me letters at uni, so be prepared to possibly get a lot more post. Some of these can appear a lot more threatening than they are in actuality and can be safely deposited into the nearest bin

I’ve not paid for it for 2 years, don’t watch any actual TV at all, don’t even have an aerial.
I have always thought it makes no sense for me to illegally stream football, boxing, cricket and whatever else on a fire stick but then worry about paying the TV license.
I’ve probably had 10/15 letters in them 2 years but never had a knock at the door.

That's a myth, the technology doesn't exist. If your TV/screen/whatever is visible from the street then be careful, otherwise just ignore any letters and definitely don't let a TV license person inside your property - they have no right to access. Internet service providers could potentially provide information to find people circumventing the rules, but they don't.

This. I've not paid mine is 5 years. I don't plan to ever again. I get a letter every 2 weeks without fail, they go straight in the bin. I am know to them as 'the occupier' which i think says it all about their 'investigation'. I'd love a visit one day. I crave it. They have no right to access without a warrant so it would be a very brief and satisfactory exchange.

I'm personally happy to pay the amount of the TV licence for the services you get, but the whole administrative system of it is fucking bonkers and must cost loads whilst criminalising a bunch of people who are just poor or a bit dim. Just fund it out of general taxation like everything else, there's no good reason for it to have its own tax.

I'd sack it off if I could trust the Mrs not to say the wrong thing if they knocked on the door.
