I used traps rather than poison as they can die in the walls and it'll stink for weeks.
There's usually more than one, I caught 12. Need to find the source of access too.

If you do use traps, use choc spread or peanut butter. Solid items they can flick out of the cup and not trigger the trap. Clever bastards.

Really inhumane but sticky traps work....just check em every day. Not for the faint hearted.

As 4D's said don't use poison unless you enjoy the smell of rotting rodent. If they're in your roof they're in your walls. Worth investing in some traps even after the pest control has been to prevent re-offenders. Also worth switching up the types of trap because the fuckers are smart and will work around it if you only use one.

Could be worse, at least your roof isn't rotting.

One tip I will pass on....
I had half a dozen traps.
If you place the traps close to the loft hatch then proceed with caution when you open it  
When triggered the traps/rat can launch a fair distance.
Also, you can do a sniff test every 2 or 3 days just by lifting the hatch slightly. A 1 day trapped rat doesn't smell, but after 2 to 3 days you'll get a slight tangy smell, best get them out when that happens, another couple of days and they are ripe  
Rats are cannibalistic, another reason not to leave them in situ too long.
Also remember a carrier bag,  nobody likes a dead rat being carried through the house.

turned out it wasn't rodents or blue lizard space aliens, it was a pair of Starlings
They wheedle their way under the tile end, beak out the roof felt and build a lovely nest
inside the soffit.
Can't touch them now, so will let them fledge then get some bird comb put up .
So, if you hear a hammering and scuttling at dawn and dusk, likely to be bastard birds!

I had that years ago, I had someone go up and there was a small hole they were getting in under the roof so had it blocked up and no problems since then.
