Just wondering. Discounting rent/mortgage costs what would an average monthly budget be for a couple these days?

That's quite a hard question to answer but expect to pay approx £250 per month for gas & electricity

We pay something like:
£170pm energy (will rise to something like £230 in Autumn I think) £60pm TV/Broadband £240 Council Tax/Water (bundled here, not in most places)
Then probably spend about £400pm on groceries.
Suspect if you add smaller essentials you get somewhere near 4D's grand, not including mortgage/rent.
Then obviously things like eating out/entertainment on top of that.

It would be nice to let us know how much you are paying for staple good items so that we can compare

Well, fuel is 2.35 per ltr. My electric is subsidised somewhat by having a photovoltaic solar system which produces about 1000 per annum off our bill.
We spend what seems like a fortune on food. Local butcher for meat prob about 50 pw, Lidl for the other stuff about 120? So about 600 monthly.
Equivalent of council tax is 200 annually. Water rates are next to nothing. About 1200 annually for oil for the central heating.

If you're sensible I reckon you will get your food & meat cheaper here but council tax will be well over £200 per month if you have a 3 bed or more. If you're on a water meter maybe £30-£40 per month on average use
Fuel is around £1.66 per litre for unleaded and low - mid £1.70's for diesel
Gas & elec £250 Council tax £220 Water £40 Food £600
I may have slightly over estimated on the food as you seem to like your meat but it will be a struggle to get under £1000 per month for 2

Christ, wish I could get diesel that cheap around here, just paid £1.84p per litre, the cheapest I could get, saw it yesterday in Andover at £194.9p per litre and idiots were queuing up to pay it.
