Sorry to hear that JJ.    Know exactly how it feels, it's like losing a member of your family.
Have heard it said ' it's only a dog '. Fuck off, you've obviously never owned one.
Chin up mate.

Cheers mate, its never "just a dog" as you rightly say, they are family. Its been a shit week, the wifes last Aunt was rushed to hospital last night with a brain tumour which she is not expected to last the week and wont survive an operation either. It never rains as they say.

Just had my girl spayed. 300 notes down. Poor thing seems as flat as a pancake following the anesthetic.

Had to have my little pup (an 11 year old Bichon/Shihtzu cross) put to sleep on Thursday evening, he had been ill a while, our 8 year old poodle is constantly looking for him as they have never been apart.

Still very raw and the wife is absolutely distraught, even though you know its coming you are never fully prepared for it, he was our little baby and was rarely away from my side when I was at home.

This was little bugger the day we brought him home aged just over 6 weeks.

Still really miss him even though he was a pain in the bum at times.

Not been a serious cat/dog owner since we were kids. I can sympathise with you and your wife and offer my heartfelt condolences. The larger the animal the more family they become. You know you did the right thing, however, the crumbs of comfort are just that, crumbs, until you get over the losswnich is never easy and of course takes time.

If I was forced to admit whether I was a dog or cat person, I’d say cat. Always had them, I love their independence, their ridiculousness, their cuteness.

And yet losing any of my cats has not been half as hard as losing the one dog I owned. I sporadically burst into tears for weeks after. It was so awful I’m pretty committed to never owning a dog again. I don’t think I could put myself through losing one after the last time. Six years on and the day I had her put down is as vivid and upsetting as ever

It’s hard, this thread clearly demonstrates that. I feel with dogs their devotion to their owners is unconditional and I think that’s what hurts. They know when you’re down they know when you’re up and they are always by your side.

I think, deep down, you know cats can look after themselves. If we all disappeared one day, our cats would live on. You can't say the same for most dogs. They need us.

That said I cried like a baby when I lost my cats.
