It's a Latin word, and U was always written as a V in Roman inscriptions. It was part of Mussolini's propaganda attempt to link his Fascist "empire" that never was back to the Roman Empire by styling himself as "Dux" (Leader, not Duke as the ignoramus who wrote the Sun caption has it).

Dux has long time been the prefered greeting of the Northerner as you should know coming from t' North yourself Paul. "aye oop al reet me dux" as they say.

Dux has long time been the prefered greeting of the Northerner as you should know coming from t' North yourself Paul. "aye oop al reet me dux" as they say.
I think that has both a different spelling and origin PV  I usually greet my bessie from my younger days with "All right, bollocks" (or bollox, if you prefer)
