I've already had a beach type holiday in May and I've got 10 days booked end of Sept beginning Oct.

Any suggestions for a city break that would still have a bit of warmth to it

Damascus is warm.....fascinating place, one of the first cities, full of history.

Barcelona
Good call, esp. If just the one city.

If Damascus or Palmyra are too arabic, try Marrakesh which is exotic and can be two centred with the Coast (Essaouira is good) the Sahara or the Atlas mountains.

Had a warm two centre in Nerja and Granada last year with car hire, or try Granada and Seville perhaps and get into the Flamenco?

Preferred Madrid myself, bit more chilled than Barca and you don't have to put up with Las Rambles (or whatever that street is called)

Rome's pretty cool if you like history / architecture / mental Italians.

Barcelona

I'd go with this one.
Short flight, easy transfer from airport, Beach, vibrant city, football. Weather will be lovely too.
