Didn't STFC put in a cheeky bid for Gascoigne once? When he could still play....

I'm quite sure we did.
It was a long time ago though, so my memory may be failing me!

Indeed, if you read his autobiography, we'd agreed a deal to sign him as a kid, were expecting him to come for training, and at then last minute Soton stepped in, which was nearer to his Orcheston home, so he went there.

Considering the Spurs link, this might be the reality behind what I think happened. (Or similar) Although I'm still quite confident that I'm right.

I remember it being reported on the BBC News at 9pm when he was already an established 'star'. We offered £250,000 I think We got David Peach later on, instead.

I thought it was common knowledge? When Lineker agreed to join Grampus 8 from Spurs there was a few months gap between our season starting and theirs. Swindon (under Hoddle I think) put in a loan bid and Lineker was apparently keen to help keep match fit but either Grampus or Spurs were concerned about injury wrecking the transfer. I'm not making this up!
