We are going on hols in August and are staying in London the day before so have probably around 1/2 a day or so for sightseeing, we have a 5 year old (and 1 year old) so want to show him a few sights, the Mrs wants a couple of shops on Oxford St, was thinking of taking in buckingham palace so he can see the guards etc but wasn't sure where else to take him which he may find interesting and is not going to cost (other than the tube) Any ideas ?

Definately the Science Museum and Natural History Museum, right next door to each other and a great few hours visitting in each for adults and kids...and free.

You can't get much done in half a day, so the science and natural history museums are good shouts. Also, much better off shopping in Knightsbridge that on Oxford Street, so everyone wins.
