Villa Park is, I believe in Aston. QPR though are actually a couple of miles from Queens Park itself and Crystal Palace are not actually based at Crystal Palace, the nearest stations being Norwood Junction and Selhurst Park.
What do you reckon Reg?
I think the point Ardiles is trying to make, is that QPR, and Crystal Palace are named after geographical locations whereas Port Vale, if I recall correctly is named after a hotel. Although, of course, they used to be called Burslem Port Vale, a name which should never have been changed. There's a few clubs who have a geographical name but don't play in that location....eg Grimsby, play in Cleethorpes....Bolton play in Horwich. Bormuff, who I still think of as Bormuff and Boscombe Athletic play in Boscombe.

Got you - Like Raith Rovers, as in (dancing in the streets of). Raith apparently is Gaelic for 'fort' or 'fortified residence' and is not a geographic area. Closer to home, Arsenal must surely fall into this bracket?

Yep...Reg has got it. Should have been clearer, sorry. Clubs will often wander a few miles from where they started out, like Bolton. (Geddit?) Arsenal works if you make it Woolwich Arsenal...making PV the exception, I think.

Yes, but they dropped the Woolwich part of Woolwich Arsenal, the same as Burslem being dropped from Burslem Port Vale. It's the same principal is it not?

The name comes from where the meeting to form the club took place in 1876, the meeting took place in PORT VALE HOUSE. I'm not certain why you say the name should never have been changed as Burslem was actually adopted later and then disused as we moved looking for a permanent ground until finally settling in Burslem in 1950.

No as we were never formed as Burslem Port Vale, we were formed as Port Vale.

OK, it was a house not a hotel.... maybe it was Plymuff then who got the Argyle from a hotel. I just prefer the name Burslem Port Vale....in 1960 wasn't Vale Park going to be the "Wembley of the North"?

I think we all love it to be honest, makes us unique. Think we bought it in the mid 40's and it took longer to build than it should have as it was indeed heralded as the Wembley of the North with a 70,000 capacity but costs spiralled and so we settled for 40,000 in the end when it opened in 1950. My grandad was one of the builders.

Hibernian, Celtic, Rangers, Queen of the South, The Spartans even.
