I kind of expected to see Lyneham being turned into a London Airport.

I'm sure there was talk a few years back of either Ryan Air or EasyJet buying it.

Ardiles is right though, this country doesn't do great infrastructure projects (anymore). Why build a new airport when they can waste £millions tacking on a new runway to an already ailing 'port? Why build new motorways when they can waste £millions widening already over-congested roads.

There was a great article on the BBC website a few days ago about projects that would benefit millions of people but ultimately will never see the light of day because those in Whitehall pay too much attention to a few economists.

Would love this to happen but a bit late unfortunately.  We need a central southern airport that isn't in or around London, and unfortunately they stuck Bristol Airport on the wrong side otherwise that would have been an option.

I hate Heathrow.

I don't understand people's problems with Heathrow? It's easy as fuck to get to, and flys everywhere. It's certainly my airport of choice.

Mine too bazza, only an hour up the road.

Edit. Saying that, Brizzle isn't too bad to get to, I go via Chippenham, Warmley , drop down to A4, through hartcliffe  Smiley, then onto the A38. Piece of Briss.

It's my airport of choice too because of location, but when you compare Heathrow to many other airports around the world it is very poor.  And if you are spending every other week there then trust me it's a horrible place.

Great if you only fly 1/2/3 times a year, if you need it for work?  Nightmare.

I'll also point out too that most of my departures are from T1 which is a pit!

The trouble with the big airports is exactly that - they are too big. When you get home from anywhere, whether it is business or pleasure the one thing you want to do is get out quick and get home. At Heathrow & Gatwick you just cannot do that as the places are just so bloody big. Its a 15 minute walk from where you get off the plane to the baggage, then another 15 minute walk to get out, through customs and out of the building. I hate Hathrow with a passion, and Gatwick isnt much better. If I had a choice, I would fly from Southampton, really easy to get to (motorway & dual carriageway all the way) and like Bristol used to be - small enough to check in, get a bacon bap, on the plane and away all within 1 square mile

Before anyone says it, I know its only small because there arent as many planes and you cant fly to as many places, so not as good as Heathrow by default, but just like the smaller football grounds have a certain charm about them, it is a much more pleasurable experience (if flying can ever be pleasurable that is)

It's an interesting point (^^^).  Do we actually need a hub airport (ie somewhere for American businessmen to change planes at en route to India or Eastern Europe) at all?  If you come to the conclusion that we don't, then the problem goes away.  Why do we ask half the country to schlep down to West London to catch a flight?  Why not let Heathrow stay the size it is, but increase capacity at Bristol, Birmingham and Manchester.  Share the load.  The argument does have some merits.

No we dont need  hub airport
The business community beg to differ - god forbid someone has to see anywhere else of the country other than London

Not just the size of Heathrow its getting there - peak times the M4 is a crawl and a nightmare
Was there this morning for half 7 to drop someone off
Hate the journey and the place

One of the best have travelled from is Bournemouth
Easy to get to , small with everything close together and still has a smoking shelter

I fucking love airports.

They mean (for me) that I'm going on holiday or going away with work. Either means a bloody good time is imminent.

Travel is great.

Cheer up you old goats.

When I was little I always used to wonder why we couldn't fly from Lyneham when we went on holiday!   Embarrassed

I've flown twice in the last year, to Cyprus and to menorca, both from Gatwick. Chose early flights out which meant leaving home at 2.30am. 117 miles, no hold Ups, there by 4.05am, give or take a few minutes (obviously, I managed to reach the speed limits for all the journey Smiley ). Coming back last month it was a mare, 27c and the Aircon had packed up, on m25 we saw warnings that there were long delays on m4 between J4-J6. Drove down m3 and missed the Bracknell junction, kids moaning, me bellowing Smiley , got off at Basingstoke and headed towards Reading, 3 hrs and sweaty. Why do flights from anywhere else seem to be surcharged?

London City is my favourite airport in the UK, although the flight into Edinburgh airport is quite pleasant.

one-way would be nice

I never understood why they couldn't just build the runways raised up with the buildings underneath. Or over the top of a motorway or something. EVERYONE THINKS SO 2D!

Fuck it, put the Terminals underground. You gotta dig the hole anyway...

I would've thought that being so close to RAF Brize Norton and RAF Benson would stop this happening.
