I'm surprised this has not happened more often in sport, maybe it does.

Doesn't sit well with me

If it helps keep the club alive then no harm done.

You would imagine the person would only come on for the last 20 of a game where they were something like 3 up or down

We did it a few seasons back, auctioned a place in the squad, won by David Marsh who was the no 69 who travelled and warmed up with the team. Only difference here is that Macclesefield are promising a run-out at some point - 5 minutes at the end of an early round FA Trophy fixture that's already decided, where's the harm?

I remember Dave Marsh running about before each game.
If it helps the club from going into admin that's fine, The problem is it could open the door and pave the way for clubs to abuse the rule.

I doubt the governing bodies would allow it to but it could become almost farcical if it got out of hand.

Interesting story nonetheless

Anyone can be registered as a player.

Jed has done it for me this season in exchange for peroni and pork scratchings.

Who the hell with £20k to spare would be sad enough to want to do this?

This made me think of Venn diagrams.  What's the overlap going to be on the circles for

  • Macclesfield fan; and
  • want to blow £20k on something pointless?

Not great, I'd imagine.

theres plenty of people with more money that sense and for whom 20k is pocket money. If they want to waste it on a 10 minute kick out so be it.

You can pretty much guarantee that it won't be a Macclesfield fan that takes up this offer.

I imagine a TV show will put someone forward... maybe Max from Soccer AM or Ben Shepherd from GMTV, he fancies himself as a bit of a player.

Shame, as he drew them out the hat on Soccer AM - I was hoping The Rock might do it...
