I leave 10% normally, save for occasions when service has been slow or rubbish. It riles me when they don't bring change and assume they are going to get to keep it.

Yeah, that annoys me too. It's underhand.

So you want paying extra for doing what you should be doing as a matter of course

No, I want a show of appreciation for bending over backwards to please you picky, drunk, boring as fuck, impatient tossers in a shite job with crap pay. If you earnt just over minimum wage per hour, I'm sure you wouldn't decline tips if they were offered.

I do appreciate the 'Reservoir Dogs' argument, why do we tip certain people and not others?  I imagine it's a historical thing, i.e. you tip the barber because if you didn't he might slit your throat and dump you in the canal next time you were in.

US is annoying for Tips, you have to tip them for practically taking a shit.

Taxi drivers get great tips from me on the way home after a night out. My body has a kind of magnetic force dragging me to my bed resulting in a £10 note being thrown in the general direction of the driver and a slurred "keep the change usually follows it"

I do tip, but I don't like the idea of it. Sometimes the portion sizes not the service will stop me from leaving a tip. One place I went to had a cheesecake dessert for around a fiver. It was the size of a cheese triangle. Utter pisstake.

The U.S is a completely different model of business though. It's more of the custom to tip more because the prices are cheaper in the first place, it's more part of the staffs wages and the restaurant chain doesn't try to pocket tips themselves.

It actually promotes better Customer Service, something we lack in this country quite badly.

No offence, but personally I think this is a classic example of received wisdom. Either that or my idea of good service is at polar opposites to d every one else's. I don't want your recommendations. I don't want to hear about your day, nor do I want to tell you about mine. Fuck the fuck off, bring my food and don't ask me if everything is ok after i've had a few mouthfulls, you fake cunt. Personally i'd rather tip the chef and collect my own food from a serving hatch. And yes, I do always tip the waiter, minimum 10%.

I often agree with this... I left a healthy tip at a restaurant the other day because the food was so good and, in my opinion, under-priced, even though the chap who cooked it won't see any of my tip unless it went into a shared pot.

YES. There's a bloke who works in my canteen serving coffee and has the most fake overly polite customer service attitude. I fucking hate the cunt.

I hated that in America and it's becoming more and more pervasive in the UK that it makes my skin crawl at times.

I've said it on here before, why do some supermarket checkout staff now have to ask you how your day has been, have you had a busy day. Please just give me some more bags, I want to get out of here asap.

Actually, I'm probably just as false by saying " good thanks etc etc" when I should be saying  "shite"

Has anybody ever said no to this question either after a few mouthfuls or after the meal?

I'm the classic rubber spined "yes fine" even if it isn't, but the Mrs is pretty good at complain if its warrented. Its scary and funny when it happens. usually the staff don't know what to do. Some are good at dealing with the complaint though.

On the tip situation, usually yes but if service and/or food has been shit then no. I have a couple of mates who always tip regardless, it winds me up.

Case Study: Swindon briefly had a TGI Friday in Shaw. The food took an hour to arrive, no word on a delay or apology from the waitress. The mates still wanted to tip.

I am more likely to complain now than when I was younger. You could actually say "I'll tell you what, I'll let you know at the end"
