I will tip if service is good but I always ask if management take the tips...Chinese are cunts for this...if so I tip cash in hand.

Service or food shit...no tip.

And discuss?

I just leave the shrapnel as I don't want it in my wallet. The misses or my daughter usually pick it up and pocket it though.

Not a bad idea when on holiday to leave a Good tip on the first couple of night, helps get you served quicker/bigger measures for the rest of the stay  Smiley

I thought this was a thread about getting rid of garden waste, furniture, black bags, rubble and all that sort of thing. Well if you have loads to clear out of the shed, garage etc and you are trying and squeeze it into the back of the wife's Corsa, don't bother as I have heard of a fantastic company known as Mates Rates Swindon, get them to do it for you, and they are registered with the environment agency, so no chance of finding the snail ridden paddling pools dumped in some unsuspecting farmers field  Wink

Do you need to tip them when they've finished?

Well funny you should mention that. I heard that some bastards, even after leaving a big back style tv smashed up and filled up with human excrement, don't even get anywhere near clicking the kettle and rolling out the custard creams whereas some striver types have a king size mattress taken away and pay double the asking price, so I heard. Different folks.... Apparently they have a FACEBOOK PAGE http://www.facebook.com/pages/MATES-RATES-Swindon/389470767816519  Wink

Always tip 10% or so in restaurants, so long as the service hasn't been abominably shit.

As I work in a pub for just over minimum wage, and tips make up my 'beer money' for the week, anyone who comes in, eats, and doesn't tip annoys me (I don't expect drinkers to tip, the price of booze is already too high, and this isn't the US). I like to think I put the extra effort in to make people's visits as easy/good as possible, not because I'm that snotty fucker who couldn't give a shite and just wants the cash, but because I actually enjoy my work and want to see people having a good meal and a drink in a nice place, enjoying themselves, and wanting to come back again.

Big groups, which you'd think would be a goldmine for tips, are normally pretty stingy. When they've spent 200/300/400 odd quid, and leave something like a £2 tip (which happens VERY regularly), it does rankle. Through no fault of their own, larger groups tend to be more difficult to look after, particularly for a small wait/bar staff, and require an extra level of care and attention, particularly when you've got other things to be doing, so for them to leave no tip, or a tip of 1% is a bit of a fucking pisstake. And it's not just because I've given them shite service or whatever, it's a normal, regular occurrence that happens all over the place.

As I know about the 'other side' of service, I'm always careful when tipping myself. As someone's said, Chinese sit-in restaurants are fuckers for stealing tips, likewise for most 'chain' places if you tip on the plastic. Chain pubs/restaurants are bastards- I always ask if tips are shared, and if the company takes a cut. If both are true, cash goes straight into someone's hand. Probably because I work in the industry and appreciate how much a little extra can take, I always tip a little extra if I think someone's service was particularly good. 10% is a 'normal' tip in the UK (and, conveniently, easy to work out), 15/20% is a 'I've had very good service, thankyou.' tip.

If I go somewhere where they have a 'discretionary' surchage, I will ask for it to be taken off the bill, and pay for what I think they deserve- most of the time it goes straight into the manager's pockets anyway. Some places can take the piss- one of my favourite sushi places in London had a 25% 'discretional' surcharge on the bill.

So you want paying extra for doing what you should be doing as a matter of course

Depends on what part of the world you are in.  Most of Europe and UK include a service charge on the bill and will get at least minimum wage plus tips for doing the job.  In the US a lot of service staff get paid by tips alone.
