I was wondering how much longer this can work - every year that one of the winners doesn't break through must make it less attractive to enter.

You get a year of dossing about out of it if you win, and a chance to say you had a trial with STFC if you don't. Just about every fella I've talked to in a pub or club, had a trial with someone at some time or other.

That's presumably why they are taking on 1 player at 3 clubs - Improve the chances of 1 actually making it.

That's twice now that the best in a thousand applicants apparently hasn't been close to cutting it. Makes you realise that 92 clubs' youth scouting teams really don't leave many stones unturned. While loads are signed and binned, it really is rare that a kid isn't spotted, or falls off the radar like Charlie. We shouldn't expect to get that lucky twice.

To be fair, David Marsh paid quite a bit for that privilege, didn't he?

Disagree. There are many players in the BSP and below who have the ability. Charlie Austin wouldn't have entered this competition.

you are right. Even Charlie had already been at a pro club as a kid and released. You will get them odd exception, but they are becoming rarer.

What's the harm? So most will be duds, it doesn't matter. They're sponsored by Samsung, we don't lose anything, but get a 'free' player. There's always the possibility of one of them being good, and if one isn't, well, no skin off our backs. I do agree there are some BSP players who deserve it slightly more though, but that's a job for scouting networks isn't it?
