We're going to Turkey this year. Previously have been with the kids (9 and 5) to Lanzarote, Tenerife, Majorca and Ibiza. All good family destinations and similar in price. We tend to go All Inclusive as it generally works out cheaper when you factor in the cost of food, drink and ice creams.
End of August will be very expensive, as you'll have missed the free child prices. I tend to book flights and hotel independently as it woeks out cheaper than a package. This year it was over £1k cheaper than if I'd booked as a package with Thomas Cook even with a free child price.
I always have a read of reviews on Trip Advisor before booking and have found the hotels to be pretty much as reviewed. Obviously if everyone says it's dirty and the food is vile, then it probably is and I wouldn't risk it however nice the pictures look. If there's only a few negative reports and the rest are good, it generally means the moaners would find something to complain about wherever they went.

Totally radical for the time....ordinary young Brits only ever went abroad to fight wars. When I first left the country, you were only allowed to take £50 tops with you, so screwed was the post war economy.

I booked ours back in January, so the flights were still quite reasonable. Of course as they fill up, the prices go up. My brother in law and famiky always go in August and only book it a week or two in advance. Some years he's had a bargain, other years he hasn't. If you leave your options open you should get something. |

Germany? No I'm not joking, it's honestly a great place to go on holiday. Seriously. mosel valley is not that far to drive, very beautiful, tons of history (Roman primarily), and plenty of wineries.
Camp-style holidays have never been my bag, but I'm sure there are tons of them around. Just make sure you don't book a nudie one, they're quite popular in Germany...

I wasn't that keen either til we went to one. And if you have kids they're fantastic. Would have gone again this year but Italy's May weather was too much of a gamble, so we rented a villa in the Canary Islands instead. Funny enough when we were looking for places to go I was telling my wife about how nice Germany looked, but again in May it was a no go. |

Hardly inspired but you know what you're getting - beaches, weather, entertainment and welcoming locals. The Portuguese are great hosts.
